Awesome concept. At first I didn't like how the teen was attached to his device but once again, awesome marketing. Really liked it.

Detachment.

Why participate in life, when you can just film it instead, and watch it on tv afterwards? ...or in this case, while it's still going on...

I just spent a Holiday weekend with all the adults up conversing and doing things, while all the kids sat on couches glued to their phone screens in silence. Pretty great.

portrait - landscape

so i'm the only one noticing that this guy holds his iphone in portrait orientation all the time, but the video at the end ends up in landscape mode - very strange, but maybe this is a new feature of ios8 which will be launched at xmas!!!?=:rolleyes::rolleyes::confused::confused::confused:

Watch it again and try to understand why the commercial is called "Misunderstood"...

Uh, I understood the video. I was making a point when the other person you also replied to stated that families that live together should play together and he feels that Apple should be projecting that and that's not reality.

why not call it what it is? Merry Christmas.

Because from the 17th through the 25th it's Saturnalia, and only the last day of it is officially the Christmass. Just because you're only dimly aware of one day of one of the celebrations of one of the many cultures on earth, doesn't mean that's all that exists and should be acknowledged by everyone everywhere. There's your real war on Christmas.

At this point, there is no excuse for not knowing what it is you're celebrating. The Roman Empire is dead. You can quit militantly enforcing its amalgamated state religion any millennia now.

Anyone know what version of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas that Apple used?

someone from 9to5***.com posted that it was Serena Ryder that is singing. I don't know if this is true. I couldn't find it online.

More white people, please!!!

WTF?!? This just doesn't feel like any corporate America spot. I haven't seen an ad this homogenous in decades.

Seriously, I'm surprised there wasn't any burning crosses or swastikas in it. The soundtrack should have been "O Tannenbaum."

I'm a white male that does video editing (mostly TV spots) for a living, and this spot makes me sick. Personally, I can't stand when companies go out of there way to show diversity in their ads. But this... This shows none whats-so-ever. I expect much more from Apple.

"Misunderstood"? Ya think? Explain it then Apple!

It's a white family, get over it.

If anything I'm sick of corporate America always shows AA people in most ads, AA is 13.6% of US as of 2010. But if you watch ads you would think it's 40-50% of the population. Since you are a editor, how many commercial you edit contain rainbow casting just because the advertiser is so afraid of being insensitive and go overboard to the other side like you.

By the way, I'm a minority and I'm find with this ad.

This is one of the worst Apple commercials to date. I would say it is even worse than the dreaded "Genius" advertisements that ran during the 2012 Olympics. The emotional people in this ad, combined with the dramatic music, make for an overly touchy feeling that has nothing to do do with the product it (barely) advertises.

You couldn't be more wrong. Apple's products enhance people lives. He had his grandmother crying at the end and he was hugging his family. People can relate to the ad. I don't think it hits home more then that.

It show's what you can do on your PHONE and not a video camera in people's faces.

This is one of the best Apple commercials to date IMHO.

It's really heartwarming to watch these "people" slash tv commercial stand-ins focusing on their iPhones instead of each other. Is this an inadvertent parody?

Pathetic. The Apple-led new world is loathsome. "It's just like life, i'dnt it?"

Fortunately, your user ID says it all....

I liked it but I don't think it would make some one not using iOS buy into iOS. They should have showed more of the Apple TV and told people it's an Apple TV. They could have done this just by showing the top of it where it says Apple TV.

But it's what I like about Apple's commercials. There isn't any blatant product placement like that. Yes there is an iPhone, but it never zooms right up on the apple logo. The use their brand awareness and sense of style and taste to exude the feeling that they want to the customer. Almost anyone watching that would've known it was an apple commercial by the end, without seeing the apple logo. It's smart marketing that doesn't take you out of the commercial by strangely zooming in on logos.

Sorry but I really did not like this ad. The ad highlighted a kid that was not participating in the family holiday fun. Instead he was messing around with his phone, seemingly ignoring the people around him and the interaction they were seeking from him. Sure in the end he was actually making a video rather than playing Candy Crush.

Seemed a little off base for Apple to be highlight exactly what is most irritating about cell phones. Showing people with their heads stuck in the phone rather than interacting with others around them. In other ads Apple has highlighted how the phone can be used to increase connections with people - FaceTime. In this ad Apple showed someone ignoring human interaction to use his phone.

Well, considering in the end he was making a movie about all of them, AND totally being apart of it all (cause he was taking the video after all). Kinda mutes your dislike of it for those exact reasons. In other words, everyone is different, don't pre-judge the situation, or the kid in question. As in the end, he did something no one expected him to do, and made everyone feel great by doing so.

Apple didn't even really point out that he needed an Apple TV or (barely) the phone in question (They didn't show you him editing it on the phone or on a computer, just that he was taking video). You see the end result and everyones watching it.
Nuff said.

Great ad!

:confused::confused::confused:

OK, what's your end game? Because it sounds like you're claiming Apple dropped the ball on ethnic diversity when their track record shows they're more likely to show an Asian girl with a white guy than any other company. :p

Nope, you're not the only one. It's been mentioned a couple times already along with the reason why they probably did it.

Anyone else notice how Apple privates its old videos. Interesting tactic.

You must feel sorry for yourself, your race... sorry they didn't include an asian, black adopted sibling. Its no ones responsibility to show diversity. Diversity is a thing that exists or doesn't, its not something anyone needs to synthetically create. This ad involved a family's Christmas, meaning it was all or nothing. Why do you expect or need diversity where diversity doesn't belong.

Vast majority?

From Wikipedia:

"Christianity is the most popular religion in the United States, with around 73% of polled Americans identifying themselves as Christian in 2012."

*cough* of which 5 percent read the bible and go to church *cough*

Just kidding..

Kind of.

----------

Um. Makes perfect sense given the context. This is a video of a family Christmas celebration. So the song is about that. If they were celebrating Hanukkah, there'd be a Hanukkah song to the video.

If it were a birthday video and everyone was singing "Happy Birthday" would you expect Apple to wish YOU a Happy Birthday at the end? Probably not, because it's not your birthday. But you don't find it strange that the song sung in the video is Happy Birthday because it is a video about someone's birthday, right?

The aim of the ad is not to get people to celebrate Christmas, but to show how the iPhone can record and memorialize a family's holiday celebration, whatever that may be. As Apple's hope is that everyone seeing this will consider buying an iPhone in order to make their own video of THEIR own holiday (New Year's eve can be included in that), they wish us "Happy Holidays."

Why is that "politically correct" rather than inclusive?

Thank you. The Fox News crowd is out in full force on macrumors today.

----------

If you are not a christian, then stop being a hypocrite and stop celebrating christmas.

Lol.

It's called tradition and family. I don't really care for Christmas, but I'm not going to not celebrate with my family because I'm not religious. I happen to care about those people too much.

And besides, Christmas is a celebration of modern consumerism disguised as a religious celebration anyways.

*cough* of which 5 percent read the bible and go to church *cough*

Just kidding..

Kind of

Weekly church attendance in the US is around 43%. Christmas church attendance is obviously far higher. People can mock the Christmas/Easter crowd if they want to, but it's still not an exactly a secular act.

Mind the cameras? Pardon me while I fixate on my iPhone while life is going by? The snow is screwing-up my screen?

I thought the same thing until I realized that the kids was obsessed with his phone was actually working on the home movie. I figure that is why it is called "Misunderstood"

I don't know how old you are, but I can remember family gatherings where one of my uncles always had a camera in his hands and was always shoving it in people's faces and rarely interacted with others. He made some great photos though and everyone treasures them today.

Anyone who can't see that the iPhone is part of a continuum and not some modern, stand alone creation, doesn't have a very good sense of history.

It all goes back to the "IN MY DAY..." soliloquy. Back in "the day," every kid was a perfect little angel that was respectful and socially engaging; and we never went to stores, but we all sat by the fire and enjoyed family.

Don't remember it? That's because it didn't happen. Black Friday's been around as long as there's been department stores, and people shopped for gifts even before that. When kids didn't have smartphones, they had landline phones that they stayed on all the time. When they didn't have portable games, they had console games, and before that they just hung out somewhere else and didn't interact that way.

Frankly, if people who always criticize how others act during the holidays spent more time worrying about how THEY act and how THEIR thoughtless remarks and actions ruin it for others, then I think everyone would enjoy the holidays a little more, and have less reason to grouse.

Don't like how the young'uns have their faces glued to their smartphones? Don't sweat it... trust me, if that's all you see in them, then you have nothing in common with them and won't enjoy a friendly chat with them anyway. Go sit in the corner, glare and cluck at them, and be just as antisocial as you say they are.

Don't like the "misunderstood" commercial? That's nice. Don't play the video; change the channel when it comes on; go buy an Android or Windows device. That'll show Apple!

I simply can't stand these sickly sweet mom's apple pie and grandpa in the woodshed style American adverts. Christmas is a religious festival not an excuse for a shopping spree.

Then my suggestion would be to follow the beliefs of your religion, O righteous one, and instead of spouting spitefully against what others do, go to church and celebrate the holiday. :)

"“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." - Matthew 7:1-5
