This only means that iOS 13 will not be on the 6, 6s and SE...

Not really. I think the iPhone 5S and A7 based devices will finally hit the chopping block this year, and maybe, just maybe the A8 based devices, but even that I find doubtful. But no way they cut the A9 as well. That's 3 years of processors chopped in one year if that happened. There would be outrage over that. I know I would be upset because my 6S still works great and is plenty fast. The previous iPod touch was an A8 chip, and if they just stopped selling them, then I think they have a year or two before they chop that. If anyone bought a new iPod touch a week ago, and then was told they don't get any software updates, they would be pretty upset. I know I would be.

My 14 year old has had a phone since 5th grade. As soon as he went out in the world and can go places with friends without always being with you, I wanted him to have a phone to be able to get in touch with me and so I could track him. My 2 younger ones will get phones when they start 5th grade. Believe it or not there are 3rd graders with phones. I think you will have a hard time waiting until your child is of driving age to get them a phone.
I didn't have a phone until 16 and I was fine. I went out into the world and did all kinds of things. Lots of other people never had a phone growing up. The thing is I'm an actual parent who doesn't let my kid push me around. I lay down the law and my child obeys. I have a great relationship with my kids and they are well behaved. I will teach them how to avoid getting into bad situations. I will get to know their friends. I will know where they are because I will trust my daughter because she will have earned my trust before I let her go places without me. I'd rather my child have the low chance of getting into trouble out in the real world vs. the more likely chance of getting into trouble on social media and having psychological issues from becoming addicted to their phones and seeing all the beautiful people on instagram and always comparing themselves to others instead of working on building themselves up by doing things in the real world themselves. There are so many body issues, online bullying issues, compulsive disorders and more associated with young people using mobile devices and specifically the abuse of social media. I see the direction the world is heading and it's quite negative. I was on Xanga and MySpace and even FaceBook in 2004 only a year after launch. The best thing I ever did was to shut down my FaceBook. I barely even post to Twitter any more and I'm considering shutting it down. So much extra time and less drama.

I don't get why everyone is complaining.
The point of these, isn't to compete with the iPhone(that's why iPod doesn't have a cellular radio).
The point is to be a secondary device, for listening to music(either stored on that 256GB SSD, or streamed), controlling smart home tech all the time, or for children who don't need a phone so they can have their music or games and don't borrow(read: break) your main phone.

A 256GB childrens game-playing/music player is a good deal. Don't even mention the Pixel 3A until Google puts out a 256GB one at $399...

Just think, rumors were, Apple planned on dropping the iPhone SE from iOS 13, because it has a 4" screen, now we know that to be false, because they just updated the iPod, and it still has a 4" screen. Why would they upgrade something if it's going to lose support in 6 days anyways?

So you are insinuating that I am not an actual parent? Get a grip. I didn't have a phone until my 20's and I was fine. But this is 2019 and times are different. I am a single father raising 3 boys, and have a full time career. I cant be everywhere with everyone. Technology is wonderful if you know how to use it.

If Tim wanted the iPod Touch to succeed, this might have done it:

Same size/shape but full screen.

A10/2GB

Upgraded camera

BT 5.0

128 GB base storage

$199

256 GB - $249

512 GB - $349
If it were this, I'd buy one today but I'm passing.

Offer a 500GB, maybe even a 1TB iPod. (The technology is there, it's been there!)
THEN this might be exciting for some. TONS and tons of music and video storage.
---
This 32GB $200 low end, 256GB - for $400. Stop it!
Bump the storage up already...we're approaching 2020. 256gb is nothing.

Oh look, the regular iPod touch spec-bump. This means the 6th Gen won’t support iOS 13.
The iPod touch 5 got iOS 9 even though literally the same thing happened in 2015 ( eg july 2015 the touch 6 came out but in September 2015, the touch 5 still got iOS 9.

At least the gold model home button square is gold also :v.

So glamorous so futuristic its magic.

Apple today announced a new iPod touch with headline features being a faster A10 Fusion chip and a new 256GB storage option.

new-ipod-touch-2019.jpg

The seventh-generation iPod touch has the same design as the sixth-generation model, including a 4-inch Retina display, a home button without Touch ID, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a Lightning connector, and a single speaker and microphone. The device remains 6.1mm thick and continues to weigh 3.1 ounces.

The new iPod touch also has the same battery life of up to 40 hours for music playback and up to eight hours for video playback, and the same 8-megapixel rear camera and 1.2-megapixel front camera, as the previous iPod touch.

With the A10 Fusion chip, Apple says the new iPod touch has up to two times faster performance and up to three times faster graphics compared to the previous-generation iPod touch. The A10 Fusion chip also enables support for Group FaceTime and ARKit on the iPod touch for the first time ever.

The A10 Fusion chip is also found in the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus and the sixth-generation iPad.

Greg Joswiak, Apple's Vice President of Product Marketing:The new iPod touch is available to order on Apple.com and in the Apple Store app starting today with in-store availability at Apple Stores and authorized resellers starting later this week. U.S. pricing is set at $199 for 32GB of storage, $299 for 128GB, and $399 for the new 256GB option. The previous iPod touch also started at $199.

Today's launch countries include the U.S., Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, the UAE, and the United Kingdom.

The same six colors are available, including space gray, silver, gold, blue, pink, and (PRODUCT)RED in support of the Global Fund.

The previous iPod touch was released in July 2015 with an A8 chip and up to 128GB of storage. With the new iPod touch with an A10 Fusion chip now available, it is possible that the sixth-generation model might not support iOS 13, which Apple is expected to introduce at WWDC 2019 on Monday.

Despite the update, the iPod touch remains a niche product, with Apple positioning it primarily as a device for Apple Music and the upcoming Apple Arcade.

Did they even give it more RAM?

I'm sooooo bummed. I've been holding out for 2 years, prepared to buy about 300 of these for my coworkers. My assumption was they were going with a slightly larger screen, a better camera, waterproofing of some sort, and would include touch ID. If I was lucky, they might even make it bezel free, include the option for cellular like the iPads, and include face ID. Looks like I'm just going to buy refurbished iPhone 7's instead.

I think it will support iOS 13 but it will most likely not support anything after iOS 13.

Apple in the past has supported at least a year of iOS updates for new devices and the Touch 6 has been sold as new up to today.

Well, I'm still rocking my iPod Nanos 5th & 7th generations. These things are built like tanks.

So would it be totally dumb to buy one of these for my soon-to-be 8yo grandson? He's been asking for one for a long time, but I've been waiting on an "upgrade."

He has an ipad, but just really wants an iPod and he DOES have a birthday coming up...
Since he has an iPad, I would personally skip it.

For kids with iPad, the only reasons to get an iPod touch would be combination of:
  • Listening to music
  • Using it as a camera
  • The kid does lots of activities and needs to wait often (I would personally recommend an eBook reader though, or Nintendo Switch if you want to spoil the kid and kid's parents don't mind)

The new ipad mini i just got has an A12 chip, apple pencil support & fits easily in my cargo pants pocket...so i have no need to update my ipod touch 6. I definitely would have considered it if Apple had done a redesign with better cameras...but since they didn’t, i won’t.

All companies do what they want, and we’re posting on MacRumors, not MacFacts.

The rumor is ridiculous and it’s wrong. iOS 13 will not abandon the SE or the 6s. The 5s sure, maybe even the 6, iPad mini 4 probably not.

The first part of your comment doesn’t make sense, I said that it was a rumor not a fact and then you point out how this is a rumor site. Second, Apple has had plenty of devices in the past that only receive a couple of iOS updates before they are left out. The original iPhone got two updates, 1.0-3 The iPhone 3G only got two updates, 2.0-4 The iPhone 3GS only got three updates as did the iPhone 4. The 5c only got three updates etc. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, I was simply stating that it could happen because Apple has stopped updating devices of that age before.

I'm not sure of the breakdown but the Touch is also used by businesses for their point of sale.
