iPod touch (6th generation) - Technical Specifications

( current https://www.apple.com/ipod-touch/specs/ )

This product is almost exactly the same. The A10 ( verus A8). Some HEVC/HEIF video/photo format updates. Linear PCM audio format . minimal iOS 12 requirement ( minimal MacOS/Windows OS requirement bumped up. ). Not in the specs but the Flash NAND chips might have changed a bit (top capacity is 256GB now and dropped the 16GB entry point).

The Screen, Cameras, Wifi, Lack of TouchID , case, etc all the same. [ I think even the colors ] Even the battery playback time. ( which is kind of hard to believe unless they chopped the battery capacity in a Scrooge McDuck move. )

This is almost embarrassing minimal work.

I would have liked a slightly bigger screen (iPhone 6-sized), 2.5D glass and touch ID :) Basically I was hoping for an iPhone 6-style iPod Touch. But alas...

However I use it mainly for testing apps so for that purpose that makes sense. For the original "iPod" usecase smaller is better I guess. And more importantly, cheaper.

For the storage they use to offer. I figure by now they’d tier it at 128g starting than 512g and 1T
But no. Starts with 32g and doesn’t even offer a 512g model! That’s surprising!

Sigh... better to get an iPhone 7 second hand. If this had a slightly bigger screen and a12 bionic, might be a whole different ballgame. Now let's see how long they will neglect this product.

And doesn't this mean the iPhone 6 series and Ipod 6 touch will not get iOS 13? The mini 4 could still get it since it has 2gb ram.

Don’t think touch id is coming back.

HOLY CRAP! SURPRISE IPOD!

I saw this on Facebook and had to keep reading to make sure it wasn’t a joke article. That was a welcome find! Good for you, Apple, for listening to consumers begging for an iPod update, and actually coming through.

I mean, not in a big way, but well done!

Apple has a new tradition lately: update products on the eve of events.
Wonder if we'll be drip-fed any other updates over the next few days - seem to remember the iMac, AirPods 2 and iPads were announced on three separate consecutive days earlier in the year.

Shame that this iPod touch didn't at least get a 4.7" screen. Was hoping Apple was going to drop the 4" screen in iOS 13, but this seems to confirm they won't. It's very constraining when designing UI which has to work both on a 4" screen and a 6.5" one, even with Auto Layout.

Sorry. I just got an Redmond Note 5 about two weeks ago. At 179 Canadian Dollar.

32GB iPod Touch starts at 249 Canadian... Like other Apple Product, this is way overpriced
Considering the Snapdragon 855 is just on par with Apple's A10 processor in single core Geekbench benchmarks (3506 versus 3501, respectively), the Redmi Note 5 with a Snapdragon 636 hitting a single core benchmark of 1326, price-per-performance, the Xiaomi device is overpriced.

In 2015, they were able to update the iPod touch to the A8, the same processor as the one in the iPhone 6 and 6 plus at the time, and they were still able to maintain the $199 price. Why couldn't they bring the A12 or at least the A11 to this?

I would worry about this device starting to show slow downs in iOS 13.

Why? It’s a slab with a screen. The UI and performance are really all that matter. The goal of the touch to to be as cheap as possible, so an edge to edge display is not in the cards. Changing the shape just for the sake of it would also break compatibility with existing accessories without adding anything tangible.
I’m pretty sure that you are not the market for a Touch, so don’t worry about it.

what in the world would make you assume I am not in the market for a touch? And its not cheap at $299 for something with a decent amount of storage... It's certainly cheap for Apple to make since they are using a 7 year old design and architecture... Stop settling for these huge companies making insane margins of customers by rehashing old technology... People like you are why these huge corporations have billions on top of billions of dollars and their executives make hundreds of millions... Because you don't care and you settle for whatever they give you, and then defend them to boot... There is no excuse for a company like Apple with the cash they have for R&D to not release an all screen iPod touch at this price point. Come on man demand better.

People complain cos apple fans are getting tired of old spec upgrades and no design changes other companies are beating apple now days we won't even get 5g for another 18 months while others have it now

I’m not complaining. 5g is hardly mature enough to waste parts on it. Apples devices work and don’t report usage to ad companies. I don’t think other people are beating Apple. If you want a new fangled piece of plastic that has no resale value after a few years go ahead.
