Where are you guys going that you are having so much trouble using Apple Pay? I live in Arizona of all places and go to California once a week, and I mostly only use Apple Pay. The only place I can't pay with my phone is literally Home Depot. Even my electric company now has Apple Pay (with a $3 fee, because it's a credit card payment, they want you to use bank account payments).

I first started using ApplePay because of the anti-skimming security benefits (having already needed new cards and ended up with identity theft monitoring from two different retail data breaches), but at this point the convenience and speed of paying with my watch is the main reason I put it on when I'm leaving the house. Even compared to using an iPhone, it's so effortless it's genuinely impressive.

The online version though? That's something else entirely. I can go to a retailer that I've never shopped at before, not create a login for anything or type in anything, and be fully checked out in less than 10 seconds. Click Apple Pay, tap fingerprint reader, done.

Reminds me of the old Jeff Goldblum iMac adds about connecting to the internet, but more accurate: "There's no step three."

Contrast with a purchase I was trying to make through a (admittedly non-US) retailer using Amazon Pay and then Yahoo Pay, both of which straight-up failed despite maybe half an hour of trying various things and multiple cards (I really wanted what I was trying to buy!). Meaningless error codes, unhelpful help messages, rejected transactions, eventually had to just give up and buy something else at another store, although at that point even if I'd succeeded in making the purchase I would have been a very unhappy customer.

An aside, the way that cards are added is also amazingly smooth these days--I signed up for a pre-approved card offer through the Chase app, and at the end of the (surprisingly quick) process it offered to add the card to my phone and watch. A few taps and maybe 30 seconds later, my watch was ready to make purchases, and I won't see the physical card for another week.

Worse is when I see them scrolling through their phone, they put it away, and pull out their cards!

I use it almost everywhere except Walmart. Unfortunately for Walmart, I have to use Walmart Pay, but I will live. I just need Home Depot on board and I don't even need to carry a wallet at all!
I don’t really blame them, it’s just quicker. If you have a countless of cards in the Wallet app, it can be tedious and cumbersome to use.

Let’s just hope Apple releases the rumoured UI refresh soon.

you must have not used CLEAR. It uses your iris.

Much better security

I recently started using CLEAR and agree that it is super cool technology! I just think for places like the grocery store and farmer's market, tapping my watch is probably quicker/easier than lining up my eyes with the retina scanner and the latter seems to require bulkier hardware. But impressive tech!

Bulkier and much much MUCH more expensive.

My cards are locked away somewhere in a draw. Most of the UK accepts ApplePay anywhere a card is accepted, in fact I cant think of a single time it's been rejected.

Yeah, are you listening, Walmart? And Home Depot?

Walmart's great hoped-for solution, CurrentC, was a spectacular flop. But their refusal to adopt Apple Pay has probably cost them billions, since every fraudster and credit/debit card thief runs to Walmart and buys stuff there (like gift cards), since Walmart is so fraud-friendly.
Home Depot is the worst. At my local store they have the exact same POS systems as my local grocery store (which does accept Apple Pay) but they put tape over the NFC spot. B*astards.

I feel the same way. I also don't find Apple Pay that much more convenient, especially with tap to pay cards. For me the two big obstacles to going all-in on Apple Pay are the fact that it's still not accepted everywhere and that I'm already carrying my wallet anyway. Because I still have to use credit cards in certain places, I default to using a card everywhere. I do love the convenience of Apple Pay when I'm shopping online, though.

The advantage of apple pay over tap to pay cards -at least outside the US if not in the US- is that, unlike tap to pay cards, apple pay isn’t subject to any contactless payment limits.

Same in Mexico. The POS that home depot has (ingenico lane 7000) is the same used by other merchants that do accept Apple Pay such as Autozone and Ikea, but home depot keeps the feature turned off (the first light of the nfc reader just keeps blinking and the pinpad says “insert or swipe card”) and only takes chip cards. Walmart Mexico also uses that same POS at least in the self checkout areas of its stores, but they seem to have removed the nfc module from the pinpads since there isn’t even a light blinking like there is at home depot.

Apple Pay on the Watch is awesome. Along with Wallet on the watch for things like airline boarding passes. In Europe for three months I don't think I had to pull out a credit card. Still occasionally in the US due to a few places that refuse to adapt to the modern world. (as I get ready to pay for dinner in Canada with my watch)

more than a few refuse to adapt in the US if you count in the restaurants. Almost every restaurant there is stuck in 1999 taking people’s cards away. A few have tablets on the tables and some others have a QR or app to pay online, but most have nothing. And while you can pay with apple pay online if they have an app or QR, it leaves apple pay on the watch out of the question at almost every restaurant in the USA.

I admit I love Apple Pay cause I can use my Apple Card like a debit card almost.

Am I the only one who saw the Amex card in the second ad as a flag on Apple Card?

Apple recently launched a new advertising campaign to promote its Apple Pay payment method, using the "Pay the Apple Way" slogan on billboards, social networks, and more.

The "Pay the Apple Way" messaging is meant to demonstrate the ease of using an iPhone or Apple Watch to make a purchase without the need to pull out a card from a wallet. Apple highlights the simplicity and speed of Apple Pay, as well as the built-in security.

Apple has installed billboards in the United States and the UK, which is where it is promoting Apple Pay. Apple plans to debut a dynamic and immersive experience using prominent street billboards and mall placements. Apple customers in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Dallas, and Atlanta will see the ads.

There are four videos that go along with the campaign that show the ease of use of using Apple Pay, and Apple plans to show these on TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, and other social networks. For TikTok specifically, Apple has teamed up with TikTok creators. Each personality will answer the question "Can I [blank] with Apple Pay?" to spark dialogue about the uses of contactless payments.

The advertising campaign is already live, with the ads appearing in cities and on social media networks. Apple Pay is one of the most widely used contactless payment methods, and Apple says it is accepted by more than 85 percent of retailers in the United States.

Apple should place ads like those in the photo on stores right next to HomeDepot and Walmart …

What do you mean “as a flag on Apple Card?” One of the ads (not portrayed on MacRumors) showed a Discover card.

really? I do not recall to have to pull out a card cause AP didn't work, with the exception of one Exxon gas station/pump that did show the symbol but it wasn't activated (which I learned when I walked in to complain) ...

I hear you but that has not been my experience.
Both in Ventura/Oxnard/Malibu (my old stomping grounds till veery recent), 1 in 10 times it failed at the pay point and around 1 in 5 didn't have it as an option.
Now in my new home (Prescott Az) I am finding about the same, maybe a bit higher that don't have it. Big one is my Grocer (Fry's Food Store) - they don't accept Apple Pay.

So to hear you and others talk about your great experience, like I said, kind of jealous.
This goes for Google Pay also as I use both.

I am kind of jealous of those folks for whom this process works so flawlessly.
Best use case for me has been around 75% success.
Since I have to carry the cards anyway, I usually use those.
Every so often I will give it a try for another week or so.

btw - Google Pay has about the same success rate for me.

What problems do you have? My 90 year old mom and my sister have successfully used it since 2016; if they can you should be able to too.

Fry’s all around Phoenix accepts Apple Pay, not sure what’s going on up there in Prescott!

Fry’s just turned on Apple Pay/Contactless like a month or two ago.

If I’m not mistaken, Fry’s belongs to Kroger. They should be accepting apple pay by now, since Kroger started enabling it at all its stores last June.

I use Apple Pay exclusively (for in person transactions anyway, not everywhere takes it online) because it’s so convenient, I don’t even carry a wallet, but these adverts are silly. Using cards is not difficult.

Most days I only leave the house with my keys and iPhone. Oh and headphones! 🙂

I hope those are not the only thing you wear when you go outside...

Jk. I am the same, who needs wallet (and key). Apple Watch and iPhone are all you need. My apartment uses keypad which also can be unlocked with phone/watch.

Not to mention the additional amount you lost out on by using Apple Card instead of a card that gives you better cash back. With my Bank of America cards, I get 3.6% back on every transaction (because I qualify for their Platinum Honors rewards tier).

Considering that gets funded by the fees stores pay to run cards in the first place, it's no surprise that stores in the US aren't going to do more than the absolute minimum (which, until very recently, was insert). Heck, I think most stores here would still be cash-only in 2023 if it weren't for cards having been a thing for decades now.

Whilst I appreciate the convenance at times I am all for small vendors, bars and restaurants who manage to survive difficult times by not accepting these payment methods that have commissions

Its quite common in Thailand to pay via a scanned QR code on your banking apps via direct transfer

It helps these vendors and the payback is more places stay open its a win win over just being able to tap with a watch

While it's nice to think that we'd have adopted QR a lot faster than NFC, I can still envision feet being dragged on the merchant side as long as Visa and MC are involved.
