I'm fully convinced that Apple Pay + Apple Watch is the best point-of-sales experience possible. Full stop. At least once a month I "blow away" a sales person who didn't know their terminal could accept contactless payments by using my Watch to pay. So easy, so quick, and always right on my wrist where it is convenient to use. Never used my card (or cash) in England - hoping the US will eventually become as well-covered with contactless payments.
Agreed. Especially when my kid was small and I would carry her around. Couple of taps, no reaching for the phone or fumbling with the wallet.

Do have launch the Wallet on the Watch itself or it works just like the phone you just hover it near the terminal and it pops up?

You need to authenticate, which is what the double click is for. However, public transport in Sydney has allowed you to just touch the reader with your watch and done, no authentication needed. That special case must be activated by the train company in this case government. For normal transactions, bank will not allow it (yet).

The bank will never allow that for regular transactions. Transit has a special code that it sends to the device to let it know it's specifically for transportation.

I have never figured out how to successfully use Apple Pay on my Watch, I just use my iPhone. I'm going on a big trip this summer so will be using Apple Pay quite a lot and keep my wallet safe in my fanny pack.
Seriously it's not hard to set up the watch and even more convenient to use.
Really.

A quick Google will show you how...

Wait what? You don’t have to press the button on iPhone?

Nope. As soon as you hold the iphone close to the reader, the wallet interface activates automatically. On face id iphones you still have to double-click the button afterwards to authorize the payment with face id. On touch id iphones not even that: just make sure your finger is on the fingerprint reader and the payment will be authorized immediately upon holding the iphone near the reader.

This always fails for me. 90% of the time I just end up pulling out my phone and using ApplePay that way. Is there a science behind how you place your arm on the reader? I can't believe I'm asking this.
there's some dodgy old machines out there.
usually the same store, same device.
when they get an upgraded one, try again.

And the users can always turn off express transit mode on their devices too.

Considering that gets funded by the fees stores pay to run cards in the first place, it's no surprise that stores in the US aren't going to do more than the absolute minimum (which, until very recently, was insert). Heck, I think most stores here would still be cash-only in 2023 if it weren't for cards having been a thing for decades now.

While it's nice to think that we'd have adopted QR a lot faster than NFC, I can still envision feet being dragged on the merchant side as long as Visa and MC are involved.
QR codes here are solely done by the vendor, all they have to do is print them on the bill or often just a card on the table no fees, commission or overheads for them 🙂

Most seem to forget all these digital payment convinces like AW etc is not free and there is a hidden 3 to 6% surcharge on the bill you pay and so called cashback schemes just reduces this a little, possibly

One of our local drink store actually adds 3% if you pay by any card or digital means. Fortunately there is an ATM just outside lol

Wrong. If the QR leads to a website or app to pay online using a card -which is what most payment QRs in the US actually do- then there is still the 3% card payment fee, and perhaps even more than 3% due to the higher risk of fraud of a card not present transaction vs card present.

I was recently visiting the UK for a few days (near Southampton) and never needed to convert currency because everywhere I went - even a hole-in-the-wall fish&chips place - I could pay with my watch. It was great!

Worse is when people wearing an AW pull out their wallet and pay cash. Happens a lot in Mexico.
I do this all the time. :D Much prefer using cash, but if for whatever reason I can't, I fall back to Apple Watch, and then cards as a last resort. I've never used Apple Pay from my phone.

I absolutely love Apple Pay, Apple Card and having it all on the Watch.

it’s still cool to me all these years later lol. so convenient. so easy.

I still carry 4 physical credit cards and 1 physical debit card with me just in case as well as like $100+ on cash. ya just never know!

I'm wondering, at this moment Apple Pay is a intermediate, a replacement of the plastic card and it still sits between merchant and your bank. Will Apple replace the bank in the future? Compared to a regular bank, Apple actually does have the money.

I haven’t carried a wallet in 3 years and Apple Pay has worked flawlessly. I travelled from the UK to France for a week long vacation and forgot to take my cards and luckily I didn’t need them!

The only time I get caught out is when thr card machines go down and I need cash which I never carry
