I am glad I couldn't bear to part with mine even though it has sat in my room for years. I am in for a replacement as well, even if I get the same 1g model back I will be content as I use my 2g iPod Touch everyday anyway.

I received like $20 from the Ipod settlement a few years ago so apparently this was a huge deal that Apple felt the pressure to "man up" and replace these units.

Sorry, people with these units for $20?

I never received anything....

There was a class action lawsuit you had to submit a form with the serial number but it was for another issue regarding the scratching of the display and how it has taken away from the "enjoyment of using your iPod"

Even though my iPod nano was replaced under the Japan program last year, I just entered my replacement nano's serial number for kicks, and it tells me that one, too, is eligible for replacement.

I still have mine! I've submitted the form and am waiting for a box now :)

That was my 1st iPod ever until I got the 1st generation iPod touch. Sold that one and got a 3rd generation.. and now I have an iPhone 4 and gave my iPod Touch to my nephew. But I would love to have my 1st iPod nano refurbished :) Can't wait!

I had to speak directly to an Apple representative via phone today after discovering I had inadvertently entered the wrong shipping address.

I asked specifically if we would be receiving 1st gen Nano replacements or newer units - "Courtney", the Apple rep, stated that Apple would replace our units with ones so that "No functions from the 1st Gen Nano would be lost." So, he stated this could mean newer versions, but who knows.

If they replace it with the useless new generation touch screen ones that's a major function of the amazingly thin and beautiful first generation nano lost - that wonderful track wheel.

I don't want to replace it at all. It was my first ever Apple and I genuinely love it to pieces. Still works like a charm. But it's unsafe so I will be replacing it.

It's unlikely they'll replace it with the 1st generation - I doubt they've been in production for a long time and they've probably scrapped the manufacturing machinery.

They still replace iPhone 2Gs so they will still be replacing these units. They will refurb the stock that is sent back as well as have some stock left over.

That can't be possible because this is what it said on the Apple Website.

Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

If what you are saying is true........that would be false advertising.

Erm no it wouldn't be. It would just mean that models that were affected were sold between this time. It doesn't say ALL iPod nanos sold between that time were affected.

If you send back your iPod as I was going to after qualifying, and they determine the battery is fine they will charge you $100 for diagnostician fee and additional shipping and handling fees. It could end up costing you a lot more money for absolutely nothing. I talked to Apple and they said if they find nothing wrong even if you qualify, they will charge you!!! Your battery could blow up two weeks later but if they find nothing, you pay them. I am not sending my iPod back after all. It is a scam!!!

and that is BS as someone has already said, it's part of a standard email template. You won't be charged. Period.

I swung by an Apple store today and asked a blue-shirt about this. He said they will be definitely replacing them with identical 1st Gen Nano.

This nano is so old. Is it even worth it to get it replaced? I guess it would be pretty cool to have such an antique thing completely replaced.

One eligible, one not

Between my wife and me, we had what we thought were two eligible iPods...mine white, hers black. Both 1GB. My white S/N was accepted while my wife's black S/N was not. I have to conclude, that while looking identical (aside from the color), mine was indeed a 1st generation while hers was a 2nd generation. A close look at the copyright dates on both devices showed that hers was a year newer than mine.

You do know that picture isn't of first gen nano's, right?

I thought it was. Is it mini you are thinking of?

The documentation provided to AASPs states that the repair is processed as a standard unit exchange under a Repair Extension Program, like-for-like, with an identical iPod Nano (1st Generation).

However i've stated that at least four times in this thread, and I can see some would be optimistic that Apple may give them a current generation model for free, but based on what i've seen thus far and following the standard procedure for replacing defective iPods, you will receive a first generation iPod nano in return, regardless of the fact it's several years old.

Reading comprehension is fundamental!

My serial number finally worked!!! :)

I tried about 9 times this morning with no luck.

Here's my nano.

I'm thinking picking up some for 10$ on ebay and possibly getting new ones from Apple might be a plan for some young businessman.

Guess you would have to know the correct serial numbers for the iPods that are affected before purchasing, no?

To those in the US that are talking out of their rear ends Re the $100 service charge if there is nothing wrong with the iPod - PLEASE ENGAGE YOUR BRAINS.

The email is clearly a standard service template sent to all people submitting machines/phones/ipods/ipads etc to Apple for repair... as such it has the statement on. Your iPod is going in for an exchange program so there is no way on gods green earth you will ever be subjected to a $100 fee. Your serial number was checked and your unit is eligible so stop moaning, panicking and posting rubbish and go do something more constructive.

Thank you! I was thinking the exact same thing. It's clearly standard AppleCare boilerplate! I'm amazed by the level of stupidity of some people.

My 4GB Nano that will hold no charge at all was accepted. Pretty sweet. I almost forgot how much I liked the little guy. Looking forward to that "like new" again feeling! :)

I wish I had an option to receive store credit instead. They would make more money that way. Just send it in to dispose of the battery safely.

I would have put it towards an iPad.
