This has been my favorite iPod—desgn wise— ever. I hope they'll replace it with another one... My serial number isn't working though! :(

I doubt they even produce these units anymore. How can they give you another 1st gen ipod nano?

Or it could just mean your unit won't be the one you'll be getting back.

Mine qualifies and I am expecting a 1st generation back. It'll be an accelerated 'refurb' programme. Battery, screen and case will be changed

I think this is EXACTLY what they are going to do.
I believe they have done it this way in the past as well.

I have have been bumped up a generation or 2 many times on applecare warranty. Cheaper to give us new refurbs 7th gen nanos than try and get 6 year old nanos refurbished.

I kind of don't want to get mine replaced, it's in such great condition. It's been in a plastic case since I've gotten it. I never really use it much now anyways... hmm what to do? I am curious as to what they send back as a replacement.

We're going to send mine back since the hold switch was stuck always on anyways. Hopefully they'll send me a 1st gen nano back. I love mine. I just haven't been able to use it for a while.

Think they will take ones with broken screens and fix the screens. I would be very happy to get a fully working iPod back if I send one with a bad clickwheel and a bad screen. I fear they might just replace the case and the battery and send it back with a broken screen.

What do you have to lose?

Would you want your house to be on fire due to this? Nuff said.

iPod Nano Replacement - SCAM!

Received a follow-up email from Apple today stating if that after if their inspection, the "product does not require service", that the consumer is responsible for diagnostic fees, shipping charges, and tax!

From Apple: Apple may charge you a diagnostic fee, including shipping charges, of no more than one hundred ($100) dollars US, plus applicable tax, if Apple inspects your product and determines based on the inspection that the product does not require service. If Apple determines, while inspecting your product, that service is needed due to the failure of parts that are neither supplied by Apple nor Apple-branded, Apple may return the product to you without servicing it, and may charge you the diagnostic fee plus applicable sales tax.

This reads SCAM if you ask me. In fact, if they return the product to me after they deem a product they claim is defective and try to charge me on top of the 6 weeks I am w/out my nano, I am going to report them to the Consumer Protection Agency as a classic case of bait and switch - charging me for services deemed unnecessary.

I don't want to believe that.
Why would they put out a free replacement program, and then say...hey, it's $100 there was nothing wrong with yours..

Had this little thing since I was 12..

I really want to know what they're going to replace it with before I send my white 4 GB nano in. I already confirmed mine that it is eligible for this replacement program and will be receiving a box to send mine back shortly. I somewhat do not want the newest generation though... I have an iPhone 4, I enjoyed the simplicity of my 1st generation while running and working out.

i bought mine on a trip to the USA but i live in Colombia, and my country doesnt appear in the selection menu.
We have a premium reseller here, are they part of this program?

I don't want to believe that.

I am willing to bet the value of an iPod nano current generation that Apple does no such thing. Probably just language the lawyers inserted to cover themselves.

My guess is that it covers someone sending in a Nano that doesn't qualify, or someone who has two accidentally sending in the wrong one, if only one of their qualified. If you plug in your serial number, it's part of the recall, and you send it in, you won't be charged.

I submitted mine a couple of hours ago and not had the email yet despite been told on the website that mine qualified and they would contact me with arrangements of how to get my nano sent to them. Anyone from the UK receive an email yet?

iPod Nano Replacement - SCAM!

The real kicker is even if they find a "failure of parts" that they deem is NOT THEIR PROBLEM that they will not only NOT service the product but charge you for the diagnostic fee. A bunch of garbage if you ask me...

If Apple determines, while inspecting your product, that service is needed due to the failure of parts that are neither supplied by Apple nor Apple-branded, Apple may return the product to you without servicing it, and may charge you the diagnostic fee plus applicable sales tax.

You are being unnecessarily scare mongering. Why?

In the Asian recalls it states they replaced the battery's and cases with new ones. looks like we may just get new first gen nanos. I hope we get new ones though!!

Where is Apple going to get new first gen nanos from? Seeing how tight Apple controls its inventories (lots of JIT allocation), there is no way they have backstock of a 6-year-old product.

Also, they aren't going to produce new first gen nanos, since retooling a factory to make them is not a cheap proposition. It'll be cheaper, faster and easier to replace the first gen with the current gen.

I wonder if they'll replace the iPod if it doesn't power up anymore but the serial is eligible?

Why/how would they charge you anything after they "recommend that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge"

Dear iPod nano owner,

Apple has determined that, in very rare cases, the battery in the iPod nano (1st generation) may overheat and pose a safety risk. Affected iPod nanos were sold between September 2005 and December 2006.

This issue has been traced to a single battery supplier that produced batteries with a manufacturing defect. While the possibility of an incident is rare, the likelihood increases as the battery ages.

Apple recommends that you stop using your iPod nano (1st gen) and follow the process noted below to order a replacement unit, free of charge.

Seems to me they've already deemed it "their problem".
