I have two questions.

1. Will apple send you back the same color as you sent in?

2. Is it a completely new refurbished ipod nano that was once owned by a stranger or will they send you back the same ipod that you sent in?

The documentation provided to AASPs states that the repair is processed as a standard unit exchange under a Repair Extension Program, like-for-like, with an identical iPod Nano (1st Generation).

However i've stated that at least four times in this thread, and I can see some would be optimistic that Apple may give them a current generation model for free, but based on what i've seen thus far and following the standard procedure for replacing defective iPods, you will receive a first generation iPod nano in return, regardless of the fact it's several years old.

How will Apple supply hundreds of thousands of a 5 year old product? Not likely.

Apple In-Store Replacement

I took mine to the Apple store today. They said despite what it says about bringing it to the store for replacement, it must be done online. It takes a few weeks because they need to build up inventory first by processing the ones coming in. That store did not have any in stock. We are definitely getting the same model & color back refurbished; or you can opt for a 10% discount off any new ipod.

I have to conclude, that while looking identical (aside from the color), mine was indeed a 1st generation while hers was a 2nd generation. A close look at the copyright dates on both devices showed that hers was a year newer than mine.

No, they're both 1st generation nanos. It just means the battery in the black iPod came from a different supplier that didn't have a manufacturing defect.

10%..thanks that's so... generous...

So, how do we opt in for the 10% discount? I already signed in for the replacement package.

10% is crap considering how much they would save on labor for the refurb and shipping.

They probably will refurbish the ones that they get back in. That's more likely than them giving out free current Gen iPod Nanos to everyone. The most optimistic I would be is that they might start by draining the supplies they still have of 1st gens, then moving on to 2nd and so on until the recall is done, but even that is unlikely.

I tried the same today. He showed me how to sign up for the replacement online... of course I had done that before.

Note that the apple website doesn't say that they replace it in store. It was just some random news sites that spread this misinformation.

First I would not trust what people in the Apple store have to say anything would be speculation at this point.

I do think now this will be replaced with a refurb. The six weeks turnover time allows them to fill up airmail boxes and ship them to china to be refurbished and sent back. From my experience with distributing refurbished electronics it would cost them a total of $10 per ipod.

Early I was thinking the "we are awesome policy" might kick in. I think Apple should give you a Voucher for an ipod nano which you must take to an Apple store. It would make people go in the store (try new products, make them want to spend more money) and alot would leave with more then the Nano which Apple would make more money from. Also it would make them look good in the news.

Apple if your reading this.....this is your time to give all us first gen nano users an early Christmas present!

The problem with refurbing the ones they get in is the fact that these old iPods don't all work at their peak performance. If they only change the battery, are they making sure everything else works as well? These are 5+ year old gadgets.

i'm not gonna send my nano back if they are going to replace it with a refurbished one ...

Mine does qualify and I will receive a shipping box.

I expect that I receive a brand new 1st gen nano as a replacement and nothing else. Thats what I bought and thats what I would like back. Pretty excited about it as the nano is pretty scratched all over.

Even though my iPod nano was replaced under the Japan program last year, I just entered my replacement nano's serial number for kicks, and it tells me that one, too, is eligible for replacement.

what replacement did u get from the japan program last year? same model ?

You can "expect" or "wish" all you want you are going to like the rest of us get what they give us. On a positive note we will get something better then we had before.

Not everyone. Mine is in perfect condition, except for a possible faulty battery.
Would suck to get someone else's ******* on as a refurb.

This is very good news! I remember when I was 11 (?) I got an iPod as a present from family relatives. Without a budget at all, I had about 30 songs on it. So much nostalgia.

To be honest, I'll be fine with whatever they send me, unless refurb. New iPod Nanos - awesome, I've always wanted one as a watch. Same iPod except new - awesome, I'll love the box and the collectible value. Somebody in the forums before posted that an Apple rep told him you would get a device with the same function - that could mean the last gen of click wheels, I'll be happy with that too!

Maybe they'll give you money towards a new iPod! I don't recall what I paid for this one (LOL I didn't pay) but it would be nice to have a $100 or so iTunes gift card.

Serial Number

My Serial Number YM614Y***** Worked. I have a black 1GB. I hope I get the new nano since this thing was laying in a drawer for the past 3 years and i had no use for it anymore. I could see them giving everyone a shuffle though since the nano is more expensive and has more features then the nano everyone has now.

Mine has a lot of nostalgia value for me... I actually hope it can be replaced with the same one.

I'm torn. I have an original nano and a 5G (Video recording) nano. I don't really have any major desire for the current (multitouch) nano, though. I'd been trying to sell my older iPods, but if I can get a pristine-condition 1G nano, I might just keep it. (I still have the Apple Store iPod nano bag that it came in.)

Confused

Hello :)
Anyone from India for this Replacement ??

I got a similar E-mail, but being a country not listed for Online replacement will have to go at an Apple Care.

I checked that my 4GB was indeed valid for a replacement on the Apple US site which readily accepted the Serial No. but then logged out as it was US nationals only.

I bet it will take more than 6 weeks for us Indians to get a refab. in my hands

Mine is Mint perfect. But the battery drains quicker these days.
But iPhone 4 has replaced it eventually.

So am still pondering ... To send or not.

Hi
I am from delhi. Have a 1GB black lying aroung in dror since last 3 years since i bought an iphone..
I have mailed my local apple store waiting for their response.

Wait..
this is weird...
on sept 2006 i bought the 1st gen nano...
then later in 2007 i kinda drop the nano and the lock button spoiled...
as it was under warranty i got it replaced...
so i got a refurbished 1st gen nano...

then i kinda check with the apple web just now...
apparently my refurbished nano eligible for a replacement...
but the shocking thing is my refurbished nano production year is 2007...
based on http://www.chipmunk.nl/cgi-fast/applemodel.cgi..

meanwhile now im trying to check using my original ipod nano serial number that isnt with me anymore (the box with serial number is still with me however)
apparently the website hang on me...

so could it be actually that in 2007 i got a refurbished product from 2006 production so that makes me eligible for another replacement??:D
