My point being: Apple needs to re-evaluate how it approaches professionals vs. consumers.

On that I agree 100%. Of all the things Microsoft / Intel is willing to do that Apple doesn't, it's their behavior of sharing roadmap plans to higher-end users that I wished Apple would do as well.

Okay, that is a fair point. I have no idea whether sales of FCX are "flagging" and to characterize it as such was unfounded. What is clear from this announcement is that Apple is hoping to boost the sales of FCX, regardless of whether it's currently "flagging" or not. I still stand by the rest of my post, which is to say that this move makes Apple look like it is completely out-of-touch with the creative pro community. Whether sales are currently "flagging" per se doesn't affect the way that this announcement comes off.

I'm not aware of any specific publication that shows that creative professionals want an overhaul to the Mac Pro line, but every creative professional that I know (~15) has said something to that effect in the past year or two. It's not a citable source, it's just something that one picks up by paying attention to the chatter in the community.

I'd agree with Ken Stone that after the horrible reviews of the launch product the sales started out flat and have slowly risen. So at some levels I think you can guess that sales have certainly flagged a bit when compared to the enthusiasm around FCP 7 and its former versions.

The Mac Pro redesign has certainly slowed things down a bit. I have no idea what happened there to delay things so much. I'd also guess that large updates to Logic X, and maybe even Aperture are riding on getting some sort of integration built into all the Pro apps and getting iOS versions.

To me it just feels like Apple's had a lot on their plate and the Dam is about to break this year. This makes a new campaign exciting to me because I do want to see them focus on higher end software.

Honestly, I would rather have a 64-bit redesigned version of Compressor before anything else right now. That dog is seriously long in the tooth. After that, a nice successor app to Soundtrack if they've got time. :p

I sincerely hope they fix the well documented FCPX bug whereby editing titles on the top spec iMac 680MX causes it to freeze.

I totally agree. I took my time transitioning to FCPX until 10.0.6 came out. I am very happy with it, and feel the power that it has enabled me with. It runs extremely well on a MacBook Pro, and for times when your system gets slow, the proxy editing feature is amazing.

The problem with FCPX is that you actually HAVE TO LEARN IT. You can't just sit down and start working with it, especially as a former FCP7 user.

You can sit here and post in ignorance, or just give it a try. In my opinion, its power makes FCP7 look like a toy and not the other way around.

Don't speak for everyone.

Final Cut X's launch was a shambles and it wasn't ready for primetime but truth be told, with all the updates it's the most fluid and pleasant way to do video for the most part. Sad that its greatness was overshadowed at first.

Who do you work for? Final Cut X is a piece of ********* in the professional community.

Well that's... not useful at all. I'd be more interested in the features you wished it had for you to seriously consider it.

the only positive comments i've seen here regarding X are that it is slick. professional editor here: i don't give a **** how it looks, i care how it edits. i'm still hobbling along on fcp7 and avid, but if they're just doing a marketing push instead of hybridizing fcp7 and X into XI, then i'm going to consider adobe, like everyone else i know.

Seriously, can anybody give me ONE SINGLE GOOD REASON to use FCPX instead of Premiere?

...Just one?

....Anybody?

...Bueller?

They would not be marketing it now except if a new Mac Pro release is imminent.

It shouldn't have taken this long. The last real refresh of the mac pro was almost 1000 days ago. It will hit 1000 days in less than a month from now. A machine like that should be constantly updated. That's how dell, hp, etc do it.

I definitely think that most 'pro' editors kinda look down on FCX for the 'features' reason but also the other reason..which is that programs like this will allow more people to become editors.

I work at a pretty big post house, and I can tell you over the last few years that work has decreased a lot and it's because of individuals and those mid level prosumers that now have access to the tools that only the pros could afford.

If this addresses the features issues, Pros won't like it.

Agreed it shouldn't have taken this long...and we see how Dell and HP are doing. There isn't a really big market for these machines anymore to make an industry off of.

Now, Apple on the other hand could always 'support' the Pro line now off the iOS behemoth and it wouldn't hurt them at all nor would they lose money.

It could be that you haven't used it enough to learn how to get the most out of it or that you are doing something different than some of the others posting here.

Based on the other post in this thread, people who didn't like Final Cut Pro X gave it a try and decided they didn't like it (especially if they used it before Apple put in the many fixes). People who like Final Cut Pro X seem to be the heavier users who learned how to get the most out of it.

Just out of curiosity, could you list the things you can't do with FCP X and why you consider it bad ?

I think that everyone would agree with that (a rarity :D). I'm just saying that they would not be starting this marketing campaign now unless a new Mac Pro release was imminent.

All hope was lost when they first released it. I see no worth in trying to win back the 'professionals'. We have already moved on.

I have quite a number of friends that work in video/film professionally, and not one of them is using FCPX. Several have switched to Adobe products, the remainder are clinging to FCP7, and you wouldn't be able to pry it from their cold, dead hands. But FCPX isn't in the plans for any of them. Apple betrayed them one too many times now.

I wonder if this new marketing push, coinciding with NAB is a hint that we will also see new MacPro's (or at least, MacPro news) during the trade show. It would be nice. I haven't been looking at the Xeon roadmap from Intel, but if anyone knows what the current release schedule is that's a great hint as to when we will see the new machines.

3. That is easy. When Intel announces the next major Xeon refresh you can bet a new Mac pro is coming shortly afterwards
.....

But that is exactly what did not happen in 2012. Intel announced Xeon E5's in March 2012

http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2012/2012030701_Intel_rolls_out_Xeon_E5-1600_and_E5-2600_CPUs.html

Apple basically did nothing. While HP, Lenovo and other workstaton vendors rolled out new models in late April-May 2012 Apple did nothing.

In June 2012, they did an relatively minor CPU update and left the GPU cards exactly the same. Even after Intel updated Apple continued to roll out with 2-3 year old parts. In part there was probably an implicit message there that this isn't what they really wanted to roll out but it was all they had at that point. Everything at this point (e.g., Mac Pro withdrawn from the EU Markets primarily because it is so old and out of compliance having been given 4 years to remedy minor issues. ) indicates that they essentially stop working on the Mac Pro ( if not outright internally cancelled it). There is extremely little justification for this extremely extended delay that is based on suitable parts' availability.

At this point, tying a new Mac Pro to an Intel processor upgrade release is a hugely flawed idea. There is not another equivalent Intel update coming till probably mid Q3-2103. That is months away. Meanwhile sales are drying up. They can't even sell new ones in the EU. Intel announced that the processors in the single CPU package models are being withdrawn from the retail market in September. ( http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2013/...ues_Xeon_3500_and_3600_server_processors.html ). Apple needs to launch a reasonable update and then about a year later launch another update. In short, they need to demonstrate some reliable, somewhat predictable actions.

Baring some highly custom and super secret part Intel is making just for Apple ( not very likely) there is little reason to delay. A Sandy Bridge E5 motherboard will take a Ivy Bridge E5 (v2 coming in Q3) upgrade with minor tweaks to firmware. If there is a working box now, it should ship. Apple could do a regular upgrade early next year so that got back on a reliable upgrade schedule.

Ha ha, that's adorable. We've already moved to Adobe. Thanks though!!!

And what will you do once Adobe no longer meets your needs by discontinuing a software tool you rely on or removing features that make your workflow better? Isn't it nice to know that Apple (and Avid and other companies) might have the tools you need? Shouldn't you at least consider exploring other software tools, or will you just call it quits once Adobe fails to meet your needs?

What task can't your friends do if they used FCP X ?
