Totally agree on the names you suggest. Why they’ve gone with the other daft names who knows?? Must of been a bad day for them when they signed that off!

Totally agree on the names you suggest. Why they’ve gone with the other daft names who knows?? Must of been a bad day for them when they signed that off!
I guess if you're not going to "sell sugar water" you can at least name your products in a similar fashion... 
Plus suggests that the larger iPhone has some other improved feature beyond a larger display, such as a better camera.
Max implies just a larger screen.
If the only difference between the iPhone XS and XS Max is the screen size, then the max name makes perfect sense.
R probably refers to the Retina display for the cheaper iPhone.
S would denote “super-retina”, possibly referencing the higher PPI of the OLED displays.
Makes sense to me.

From the more recent past, these names made me think of the Chevy Malibu Maxx
“We are proud to announce... the iPhone Excess to the max! Starting at $1149”. Now the name makes sense
The C naming scheme failed with the 5c, because the perception was that it was the cheaper iPhone. People buy iPhones partly as a status symbol, and the last they want is to be seen with what is considered an “inferior” iPhone.
I don’t see Apple going down that route again.
Since you need to be mad in order to get an iPhone, maybe next one will be "Mad Max".
Whoever chose the names needs to be fired. They're absolutely awful.
It really says something about the prevailing market when a company feels a car has to be called "Maxx" (with two "xs" for MAXXIMUM impact), instead of just "wagon."
It sounds like an Android phone because a lot of them have actually used "Max" as a phone name. Samsung, LG, ZTE, Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi, Asus, LeEco, and HTC have all used it in a phone name. Motorola even "turnt it up" with two X's... and all caps on the Motorola Razr MAXX.
The only thing missing is the exclamation points. "Max" is literally - urban dictionary literally - the most Android name ever.
Isn't it the opposite? Plus is a simple name for bigger, like a bigger screen. Max is associated with "maxed" out specs, idk... but max is also another synonym of big, like maxi size.
First step towards names like 'HP ENVY 17-bw0000na 4K UHD', 'Lenovo ThinkPad T480s' or 'Acer Predator Triton 700 Gaming Laptop (PT715-51)'.
Well, the failure of the 5c was not because of the 'c' letter in its name, though.
"Apple appears to have leaked the names...." - looks like Apple is full of really incompetent folks - this is not a third party supply chain - this is internal to Apple and shouldn't be happening.

Never liked PLUS and MAX is so not classy.
But anyways, I feel there will be a lot more to expect from iPhone XS Max since the word MAX emphasis more on high powered smartphone with top features.
I would be very glad if iPhone XS Max has ProMotion or I feel there is definitely some distinctive feature coming up in iPhone XS Max that would be something new and big.
Like if you think about it. Tim Cook will talk first about iPhone XR and we already know the basic features it's going to have. When he moves next to iPhone XS, it will be better than current iPhone X and those could be better screen resolution and improvements in camera etc. So iPhone XS Max has to have some distinctive feature that iPhone XS Max doesn't have and it can't be only Screen Size. If it's only the Screen Size, this would be the worst Apple Event ever!
But anyways, I feel there will be a lot more to expect from iPhone XS Max since the word MAX emphasis more on high powered smartphone with top features.

When I read the comments here, and everywhere else on the Internet.. I get the feeling like people are purchasing and choosing their phone based on its name…
I fully agree that Apple’s naming scheme is out of whack. There is no denying it. But come on? Who really cares? The name isn’t even displayed anywhere on the phone itself… And most people don’t walk around and tell everyone about their specific phones name and model.. If you are ever going to tell anyone about your phone you will most likely just refer to it as an iPhone. And honestly, who would really care about what phone and model you currently have?
Still people seem to make this into a big deal? Since when did this matter? It doesn’t matter, not even a tiny bit. It won’t affect Apple’s sales, and it won’t affect how the phones work and performance. It doesn’t change anything. Why do people even care? How is it even possible to have this crazy amount of negative feedback about something so meaningless as this?

Or they could just say "and we decided to launch it (the Xs) in a bigger size - The iPhone Xs Max" and that's it. No mention of other features. But I also hope for some distinctive things.
That could be possible also lol. But to end it that way, PLUS name would be appropriate.
The word "MAX" is giving me some hint that there could be something big coming up for iPhone XS MAX
What? All iPhones have retina displays. Apple has never used ‘r’ before to indicate retina. Xs Max sounds like some Verizon exclusive Droid phone. These names are dumb. Clearly Apple marketing is overthinking this. I’ll be interested to hear Ken Segall’s take.
