From the more recent past, these names made me think of the Chevy Malibu Maxx

Get over it guys. Today you are being offered a very very nice range of iPhones. Be grateful in life! Why bitch over product names when YOU have ZERO control over them??? Maybe study for a Masters in Marketing and then offer your CV to Apple? Until then, just enjoy today!
Shame that some people are never satisfied.
It's just a discussion forum where people can air their views. It's pretty obvious the new names haven't gone down very well with MacRumors members so far but I'm sure a lot of them will be proudly displaying the new names in their signatures in a couple of weeks time. :D

“C” being synonymous for “cheap” might have helped twist the knife a little.

Yeah, I see your point. Even the slightest issue gets exaggerated if you think that your phone is the "cheap" version of a bigger model.

Isn't it the opposite? Plus is a simple name for bigger, like a bigger screen. Max is associated with "maxed" out specs, idk... but max is also another synonym of big, like maxi size.

Sort of but why would any company call any product 'max', because that says, "we're done, this is the biggest, baddest ever". What do you call it next year, max+, max-er, even-more-max?

I'm British, so I couldn't care less what the phone is called, I don't buy any device based on name.

If it does what I want it to do and does it well, I'm in.

Xs Max sounds like an Android phone you’d get at Verizon. And Xr? What the heck does that even mean? What’s the point of the ‘r’?
The ‘r’ stands for rock bottom. Because let’s face it, the naming conventions can only go up from here. Terrible nomenclature for the 2018 iPhones.

The issue I saw was as such.

The 5c was being sold at the same price as a discounted iPhone 5. Spec-wise, they were virtually identical.

With the iPhone 5, even if I bought it a year later, other people won't know, and I would be seen as using an iPhone which was at one point in time the "best" that Apple had to offer (in 2012).

With the 5c, all pretense goes out the window. You know at a glance that I bought the cheaper iPhone. When the 5s could be had for an extra $100.

I think Apple has learnt enough from the 5c fiasco to not repeat it again. It will be interesting to take note of Apple's messaging during the iPhone keynote later, how they try to hype up the iPhone Xr without making it painfully obvious that is the cheapest option available.

Apple appears to have leaked the names of its new iPhone lineup on its website, just hours before the company is due to officially announce them at its "Gather Round" event later today.

The names "iPhone XS," "XS Max," and "XR" were first spotted by ATH in a product sitemap XML file hosted on Apple.com. The names are linked to new products that come with AppleCare support and are associated with phone cases, seemingly confirming Apple's official nomenclature for its 2018 iPhone lineup.

The XML file also reveals new Apple cases for the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max devices that come in both silicon and leather, with midnight blue, white, black, stone, and Product RED colors set to be available.

Two days ago, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple would introduce the three widely rumored new iPhones using the now-leaked names: a 5.8-inch model named "iPhone Xs," a larger 6.5-inch model named "iPhone Xs Max," and a lower-priced 6.1-inch model that Apple would call "iPhone Xr".

Other rumored names for the less expensive 6.1-inch LCD had included "iPhone 9" and "iPhone Xc," harkening back to the iPhone 5c that came in multiple colors. Apple's 6.1-inch iPhone XR is expected to feature an LCD display and a single-lens camera to keep costs lower than the two OLED devices.

Apple is set to unveil the new 6.1-inch iPhone XR alongside the 5.8-inch OLED iPhone Xs and the 6.5-inch OLED iPhone Xs Max at an event that will take place later today at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time. For full details on what to expect when the new iPhones debut, make sure to check out our roundup.

Update: Apple has since pulled the XML site map from its servers.

Why no one complained when htc launched the one max? Or when samsung launched the J7 max?

I’m sure Apple has done their homework on it but it really seems to be confusing adding this Xr into the lineup. Seems to me that if someone wants to save money and buy an X like phone they would simply by a good used last year’s X. You get the better camera, better screen. It may be a bit smaller but not sure the 5.8 is that much of a difference to sacrifice the better camera and screen for.

It sounds like an Android phone because a lot of them have actually used "Max" as a phone name. Samsung, LG, ZTE, Huawei, Vivo, Xiaomi, Asus, LeEco, and HTC have all used it in a phone name. Motorola even "turnt it up" with two X's... and all caps on the Motorola Razr MAXX. :p:D The only thing missing is the exclamation points. "Max" is literally - urban dictionary literally - the most Android name ever.
Samsung to with the j7 max
