The size refers to the case size and not the screen. The current 42mm has a 42.5mm high case so it looks like the cases on the new models will be a couple of mm bigger.
Might have to rethink size now. I have a skinny wrist and tried a 42mm wondering if it would be to big. It seemed fine to me but barely. I was set on going for the 42mm the 44mm might be just a tad to much. Might end up going for the 40mm instead as long as the screen real estate is increased.

Wait. So our old bands won’t work with the new watch?
I hope you arent serious.
The watch is the same the edging of the glass is just pushed out further.

They wouldn't make all watch bands obsolete over the last 4 years...

Until I see a 44mm SS model listed on an apple product page, i’m operating under the assumption that leaked list is complete. If that makes me dumb and I should kill myself, well....so be it.

Whoa, who was saying to go do that, it was a joke lol

In all likelihood, this event is for iOS, so we'll see the iPhone, watch and probably iPad. The Macs will will not make an appearance, imo.
But there were no url leaks for iPad. Makes me think Apple might have another event in October for iPad and Mac.

The new 40mm will possibly have a similar screen size to the current 42mm due to the reduced bezel size.

That's what usually happens. That has happened in the past.

They could carry this event alone on the watches and phones. Loads of hype this year around these devices.

Does seem tidier to go down the iOS/Mac OS route though.

I’m in the same boat as you. I wish there would be a way to test out the new watch sizes before I preorder it.

Well, for the past years they've almost always made a late October event for Macs and iPads and if they did release all of them on today's event, everything will get too saturated and they won't actually have time for all of the products. The main topics today are Apple Watch and iPhones (not to mention iOS 12 too).

We've already seen some iPad leaks and it's normal to not hear anything about the upcoming Macs lineup, but I'm sure we will do pretty sure.
I think we’ve only had one October event since the iPhone 4 launch. The norm is to only have an event in September. Perhaps iPads aren’t quite ready yet or Apple is signaling how they think about iPad by showing it off with new Macs. Or there’s no event at all and we don’t get new iPads until next year.

so are we seeing larger cases AND thinner bezels?

could that make the new 40mm actual screensize (if bezels were thinner) similar or larger than the current 42?

There were 5 October events since 2011 and they skipped last year.

This makes sense as I discussed in a previous thread with a fellow commenter. You see, since the Apple Watch has an aspect ratio where it’s taller than it is wide, to reduce the bezels and scale the display up means that it wouldn’t scale evenly on the top and bottom so the bezels would be uneven. The extra two mm accounts for this and makes sure it has even bezels so the display isn’t running off the side. If it’s what I’be been thinking then it will be good because it won’t change in width. This will also give more room for a larger battery, or allow them to make it a little thinner!

What are the odds we will simply see a larger screen in the same watch size? Meaning older bands remain compatible. Else, I see youtubers like iJustine crying (have you seen her watch band collection?!?).
If the size refers to the height and not the width then I’m assuming they’d still be compatible? I think Apple would be in a world of hurt if existing bands didn’t work with the new models considering there’s not a drastic design change (e.g. going round).

Honestly, apart from the September event which is always set in stone every other event is a case by case thing. Until now, all leaks have suggested that these devises are launching this year so there should be an October or early November event. It was too ambitious to consider a event that included al 4 major device categories anyway.

Dear god I hope not, unless they only stretch it vertically. Any change in width = all previous bands incompatible.

The way the connector tapers, there's easily a little room for a touch more width, without visibly changing the watch-to-band ratio that much.

Also see the comment by @macduke above ...

Hopefully this -
38mm work with 40mm
42mm work with 44mm

Right, with the width being the same or within a mm or so, I don't see why the band connection would need any change.
