Is HDMI a "port"? (Yes.)
Is Ethernet a "port"? (Yes.)

Many people here are making assumptions that just don't fit the Apple paradigm.

I bet if Apple does have a new Mini design come out in October that it will be the last Mini. As a device it will not be a big mover. It fills a small niche but that also means it's not important to the bottom line.

I might consider the mac mini if it's strong enough for Logic Pro and serious recording

But.. I am not paying that for a raspberry pi? Why do we need a smaller mac mini? It's called mini as it's.. SMALL. Already. So infuriating as all know this means, more heat and more noise and that's the last thing we need.

Curse the day Apple bought Logic. Affects so many people.

Yeesh. This is like if there was rumor Toyota was coming out with a compact pickup truck you didn't think would be powerful enough to tow your boat and you got all up in arms about the rumor. The Mini is an entry-level Mac. Always has been.

As for the comparison with a Raspberry Pi... what? Apple's base model iPhones have more processing power than that.

I am ready to see this little machine. I have the M2 Pro Mac Mini, and am ready to upgrade to the m4 Pro.

As long as it also has ethernet and HDMI, might be usable. But 5 ports without is not usable at all.
Internet, keyboard and mouse connect wirelessly (over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, respectively).
One cable goes to my USB-C display (that has a USB hub built in with USB-A ports).
One goes to an external drive.
One remains free for a USB flash drive or card reader.

Certainly usable.
Though I do prefer to have my network connected via ethernet (but can do this via my monitor's USB or ethernet port)

This is the most exciting product that I will probably never buy. Here's what I mean:

The Mac mini has always been a product that every time it updates I wish I could get one. BUT, it just works out for me to have a laptop and use it with a monitor and peripherals for desktop use, and then of course on the go as a laptop.

That was true in 2008 when I switched to Aluminum Unibody MacBook, and I've never looked back.

And now, with Apple Silicon, you can get in a laptop what you get in a Mac Mini, and even more right now with the "Max" variant in MBP.

And yet, every time Apple release a new Mac mini I think to myself "wow I would love to buy that". Then I come back to "shoot, I really just need a laptop thought".

And this one looks like the coolest one ever. Seriously, it's gonna be hard not to buy this. Sounds like it's going to be an awesome device.

I exceeded 5 ports needed in 2002 because I bought a printer:

Monitor
Keyboard
Mouse
Printer
Ethernet
Speakers

During the life of that desktop computer, both keyboard and mouse went wireless.

Today, I would only connect a monitor and power through a cable.

That's quite an upgrade. I hope it doesn't look exactly like that render, though. The corners are too rounded and it looks bad

Also, some colors like the iMac could be fun!

MMW: by next year the USB-A port will be completely gone on every Mac model. They are pushing hard for one connection to rule them all.

I'm just the opposite. I'm very much drawn towards the MacBook Pros but I just don't need / have use for the portability. The Mini is perfect for me with the added bonus that they are much less expensive. Like others here like @AppliedMicro and @hans1972, I have a USB-C monitor that has USB-A ports. So a single cable from the mini to the monitor and I'd be all set.

A port on the front of the Mini would be nice for the occasional thumb drive but really not necessary. I don't like the reduction in ports, should that come to pass (most certainly will), but the move to USB-C / Thunderbolt is welcome for me.

I'm reasonably optimistic that it will have both (but especially Ethernet).

Ethernet for reliability in server use (they're offering a 10GBps Ethernet port as a configurable option on today's Mac mini - and a 10GBps Ethernet adapter via USB-C or Thunderbolt is would be really cumbersome to use).

And HDMI to connect it to TV screens, video projectors etc.

I already have an M2 Pro Mac Mini, which did cost quite a lot, but an M4 Pro would be really interesting... hmmm...

I wonder if it’ll be possible to power it via USBC? If this were possible you could theoretically plug it into a power bank and you’d have a pretty nifty raspberry pi type device.

Bonus points if Apple lets you run sidecar with this to have your iPad as the main screen for the mini but unfortunately very unlikely

Also, with the Mac mini, you will never have battery problems.

That clean Apple aesthetic tho!
(until you start actually trying to do anything)

you're supposed to treat your Apple device as an artwork!

The moment you need to use it to work, the aesthetics and appearant durability (delaminated screen coatings, butterfly keyboards, batteries dying sooner than expected, etc. in the past) falls apart

I like how Apple seems to be pushing the boundaries of innovation with their next-generation Mac mini. The addition of five USB-C ports and the rumored M4 chip options sound like a significant upgrade for me!

My guess it that ethernet will only be on the higher end model. They'll both have HDMI, as these are popular with small businesses that use cheapo PC monitors and also home theaters

Buying day 1 - been without a computer for 20+ days - very hard - been on the Mac since 1992!!! Always had a computer till now… release it NOW please :) lol 😆

In 30 years and dozens of devices later, I have only been to the Apple Store once with a defective device. That was my iPhone 5 and the battery swelled to lift the screen. It was 2 years old and out of warranty, but the rep took one look at it and gave me a new replacement….no questions asked. My wife still uses her original iPad Air. Yes, it doesn’t update to the latest iPad OS, but it looks like the day we bought it and plays Netflix with no problems. I had both a 2012 MBP and Mac Mini. Kept them each for 7 years until I updated to an i9 16” MBP…and they both worked and looked like the day I got them. All of my Apple products are used for business and pleasure, and not babied. So, my personal experience just doesn’t jive with yours and the other guys assertions. Plenty of friends and family that have used Apple for years with no problems or complaints also.;)
