YouTube personality Mark Watson, known as Soldier Knows Best, praised the iPhone X's design and performance. He said the new swipe-up gestures for unlocking the device and multitasking will take some time to get used to.

This was an interesting video, if for no other reason than he 'didn't have an opportunity' to watch any video on the device and 'Apple didn't allow him to test the rear cameras'.

“Invited” = “Honest”

Just like all those bloggers who were given passes to Disneyland to review that awesome Pirates of the Caribbean 5.

Desperation.

Phone isn't selling as expected.

People are nervous at HQ.
A new marketing this year? looks like its sales are not really "off the charts"

Lol -- new marketing method suddenly = slow selling product. No. Big rebates or incentives would be more indicative of slow sales. So far none of the U.S. cellcos have offered anything in the way of real incentives like are available with the iPhone 8 and also were available with the 7. But does Apple want to gin up excitement and score as many sales as fast as it can make product? Isn't that the point of for-profit companies?

I think what is desperate is all the iPhone X haters trying their damnedest to interpret everything iPhone X into poor sales based on vapid hunches. The thing is Apple has to publicly report revenue. So when it reports things like "demand is off the charts," suggesting record breaking revenue to go with that, it has to show it's money on that statement. It's not schoolyard talk like here on MR. Apple stock will get demolished if it raises expectations beyond actual performance. No one loses more from that than Apple execs. OTOH there is no evidence that sales are hurting. The 5-6 week backorder remains constant. And even TMob's supply for 256 models is backordered until very late Dec. now.

But we'll see what Apple has to say at it's Earnings Call this Thursday.

Idk why everyone thinks this has to do with sales.

More likely, Apple decided they wanted a more "fun" narrative ahead of the magnifying glass scrutiny of traditional publications.

Phase 1: Product announcement via keynote
Phase 2: Press allowed to touch the product for the first time (but not review, just preview features)
Phase 3: A "first review" gets posted - in this case, someone who reviewed the phone 10 years ago
Phase 4: Certain members with social media presence can touch the device, and set it up themselves, and use things like Face ID on themselves, and post previews and first thoughts (but no formal reviews)
Phase 5: Press embargo lifts and formal media reviews can take place. The blogs you read and the YT personalities you respect will be allowed to give unfiltered reviews/opinions
Phase 6: General public gets the phone

Welcome to a well calculated product launch. Anyone that thinks this wasn't planned out in excruciating detail internally has never worked for or with a big company.

This must be the most random bunch of YouTubers ever. I mean there are so many better ones to pick from. MKBHD, Unbox Therapy, UrAvgConsumer, Jonathan Morrison etc. High Snobiety ain’t even a tech YouTube channel, just some watered down news publication.

UrAvgConsumer dropped his “experience” not long ago and hinted at a bigger video coming Friday

No idea who any of these people are or why I should care about what they say

Early hands on time to a bunch of bloggers that are guaranteed to give positive “reviews”? This is an odd move by Apple because they usually have more faith in their products but I guess this round then something has them worried.

Anyway, the biggest question to this stunt is.. How in the world did these YouTubers manage to make an entire video without promoting D-brand skins? :D

I suspect this could be the case. If Apple does not release sales numbers after the launch and Cook just says demand is "off the charts", we'll know there is a problem.

"Off the charts" could be off low...

Interesting that they went with these more unknown YouTubers instead of the bigger ones like MKBHD or iJustine etc

But I like the fact that they didn't go with the notorious tech reviewer's on YouTube. It gives a different perspective from other YouTubers that we may not have heard of and offer different viewpoints than what were used to seeing from MKBHD or Unbox Therapy.

They most certainly already sent proper review units to the high power blogs and YT channel owners, specifically for first reviews. But the key there is people like MKBHD are getting units specifically to review and give unfiltered opinion.

This was more of an advanced preview event - for the first time since the keynote, we see regular people setting up Face ID. I believe even in the post keynote media demo, the media was not allowed to setup Face ID for themselves. In fact, probably the real reason they're choosing this particular phase of media coverage - they're socializing that this new feature works and people you *DON'T* know can set it up and use it right away.

iPhone X advertisements are in pretty heavy rotation on Velocity Channel (a Discovery subsidiary). Unfortunately the advertisements don't really show anything except what appears to be an animated screen saver that looks like flowing, liquid colors. Never seen anything like that on iOS before so I'm not sure it reflects what the phone will really do.

As far as these Youtubers go, I guess it can drum up some underground interest. Millennials are the future luxury consumer group and Apple needs to get them focused on material items rather than the experiences they are more typically spending their money on now. I don't recognize a single one of them though, so apparently at 48 years old I'm no longer in their target audience. :(

Why? MKBHD actually got an invite to the iPhone keynote. He most certainly has an iPhone X he’s reviewing and we’ll see the full review when the embargo lifts.

This is just carefully calculated press by Apple to continue to drive hype before Friday.

Interesting. Apple is using the "Influencer" market. Is this a first for them?

This is a advertising technique used (most notably) by the gaming industry. That said, I don't think it's a sign of "desperation" especially when my pre-order *still* doesn't have a ship date (Yeah, I didn't stay up until 3 AM ET to pre-order. LOL)

You would think EverythingApplePro would be there

Only video I've seen from that guy was a review of "Designed by Apple" Book and he couldn't name a any of the products released before 2009. Hardly a pro in my book. Looked at a PowerMac G5 "that looks cool. just don't know what it is"

sigh.
