You know google gonna put out one thats very hastily done just to be first now

Yeah, definitely.

Erm? You lot never follow tech news or releases outside the Apple store and MacRumors do you?

http://www.google.com/tv/

And it came out earlier this year, hardly rushed and gives more useful features then voice control!

Oh and in the UK, Apples 27" Cinema Display is £899 or $1446.93 with tax. So double or triple that at least for a Apple TV of reasonable size. But even so £899 in the UK gets you a large range of big size televisions to choose from!

Will the TV come with a remote?

Yes

Will you have to push a button on the remote to activate Siri?

Yes

Will the whole thing be a complete failure?

Yes

It does not matter to me if you would have to press a button to activate Siri . . . who cares? That doesn't mean the TV will be a failure.

No not really, so? I only pay attention to Apple news and rumors. I think it would be to much work to pay attention to all the other companies news. But I looked at that TV and it looked pretty cool.

Just opened my "AppleTV" savings account. I've got a little over a year to save up. Anybody want to guess sizes and prices? I say 42 inch for 1499 :D
Geez, I really hope thats not the price... especially in a couple years. But hey, some people will buy anything at any price ;) Hopefully, they'll update Apple TV to include Siri, since it seems like the features of the TV could be accomplished using just a set top box.

Im not going to bother reading all the predictions and pontifications of all 11 comment threads, but i will say this: Just because it comes from the NYT doesn't mean this has any more credibility than it did before. They think just because they work at this "reputable" newspaper that they can just pull **** out of their **** and present it as definitive fact, they've been doing in for AGES now, and people just gobble it up cuz its NYT.

A few different notes on why this is easily one of the dumbest ideas ever, and dumbest rumors ever.

1. What TV is the "sweet spot" size? Or if they have 2-3 models, what sizes will they be?

2. LED, LCD, Plasma? last i checked there is NO definitive answer for this

3. So you looking forward to taking your TV in to service when an OTA update fails and you cant figure out how to plug your computer into TV to 'fix' it? through an iTunes restore?

4. This is ALL predicated on the stupid rumors seeded for AGES now in this realm, in conjunction with jumping to conclusions based on ONE vague quote in his biography? Dumber than dirt to jump to THESE conclusions based on ZERO real evidence / 99.99% conjecture.

5. Most people don't want to buy a whole new TV just to get Apples latest AppleTV offering, and if their other iOS devices are any indications there is going new models every year/2 years or whatever the cycle is, thats not going to cut it with TV's. MOST people don't replace their TV's that often.

So yeh people will say "oh yeh 2013" Like these idiots have ANY idea about how soon things like this happen from Apple, anyone that makes predictions this far away are NEVER right, and by the time 2013 comes around, no one will remember they pulled it out of NOWHERE and got peoples hopes up, which will perpetuate the cycle of trusting NYT blogs (or even the newspaper, totally worthless sycophantic liars)

Another side effect of this rumor mongering and people being incredibly gullible and gobbling it ALL up like its 100% verbatim fact, look at the response to the "iPhone 5" and its "4+ inch screen" which all these blogs "guaranteed" people?? Then everyone gets their **** in a twist when they dont get that oversized screen they were promised.

Irresponsibly reporting things as fact doesnt just harm the proprietor of said "facts", it also raises expectations to unreasonable levels for the masses who generally aren't savvy enough to think these things through clearly on their own.

Google TV is an actual TV? i thought it was a box like the Apple TV....

My M-stream Cable Card works like a champ in my TivoHD. Unfortunately the hardware integration process is a real pain and if Apple wasn't willing to add HDCP to OS X for Blu-ray support, there is NO WAY they will bother with Cable Card integration.

HDCP is in iTunes (and Mac OS X) currently. Ran into this issue recently when trying to play a movie from my Mac Mini onto an older LCD TV with only VGA (no HDMI) input.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what Apple is going to do with the Apple TV, but I'm sure that it's a hell of a lot more than making a Thunderbolt display with a TV tuner and Siri. That's why so many here are scratching their heads about this. They have no idea what is really coming.

I'm starting to fall into your camp. I can't see how Apple could make a go of this without cutting into their huge margins (and wait until you see the margins on the 4Gs!). But they could be onto something big. Siri seems kind of huge, but also something that can be done with a $200 hockey puck (current form factor with a little bit extra and better margins). Maybe it is licensing the technology to current TV manufacturers, sort of like Microsoft license an OS to computer manufacturers. I guess that would be very un-Apple, but the margins would once again be huge.

But this rumor now has some serious legs. It isn't just an industry analyst looking for page clicks on a blog or something. It seems like something is coming. It may be a year or two away, but there is something out there being worked on now.

And this is exactly why certain people here think Apple invented everything: they only learn about it after Apple does it.

Think Different - Think Positive :apple: I'm in! The minute I heard this news with an Apple TV using Siri, I knew this was gold.

All the naysayers hang back, be negative, and join the fray with a 180 degree turn when the product finally launches. Remember the time when all the folks were saying the original iPad was like a big iPhone and wasn't anything special? Same folks turning around and getting one themselves. Oh, the hypocrisy!

And yes, Siri will be in the iPad3, as well.

I sincerely hope that they release this as a set-top box as well. I'm not buying another TV just because of Apple software and Siri.

back to the future

it'd be really cool if when you walk into your home and pass by the living area, it recognizes you and automatically gives you what you want to hear/see. for real, even turning on a tv is becoming a hassle.

I never said that Apple invented everything. Apple reinvents stuff. Who cares if I'm not as much of a nerd as you are. I have better things to do than pay attention to every single product release from every single company! Just because people know less than you in a certain subject doesn't mean you should look down on them reproachfully! I'm not tech savvy at all, I just like Apple and like to keep track of their news and rumors. Apple did not invent voice recognition. Apple did not invent touchscreen technology. Apple didn't invent invent the smartphone. Apple did not invent the computer. Happy?

Sounds cool, but I'm afraid of what would happen if a family tries to watch TV and it goes
"Play Sesame Street!"
"No, let's watch Dancing with the Stars!"
"I want to watch the Broncos game!"

How will it know which person to listen too? Also, how will it know to not listen to the dialog on the TV shows/music, etc.?

LMAO yeah this could be a guys worst nightmare on football sunday.

I'm one of the millions of TiVo HD users who would disagree with that.

When I got my TiVo HD I went to the local ComCast outlet to get the two CableCards (it has dual tuners, so needs two decoders).

The woman at the ComCast counter said - no, you don't need two cards. Here's the new dual card (two decoders on one card). Plugged it in 5 years ago, and not a bit of trouble.

Me too. I've had an M (it's the dual decoder card) CableCard for the last 4 years from Comcast in my Tivo HD. No problems at all.
The only reasons the cable people tell you there are issues is b/c they want you to use their equipment, or they purposely gimped their support of Cablecards so that there would be problems and you would end up using their equipment.

I want Siri on my Mac so bad, or maybe something better. I was in Illustrator the other day and I just wanted to tell my computer what I wanted to do, then it could grab the tool for me and (why not) even draw it out for me. But that's just because I'm really lazy.

But it seriously would be cool if you had a question and could ask your computer to google search it for you.

Uh, wow. Might I suggest a Valium? Seriously.

I would hope that the thing would also offer a way to control it by hand/fingers/touch/remote..... As we've already seen, Siri doesn't understand everyone's speech.

I'd rather it use what I like to call "Air Touch" An idea I thought of a few years ago. I'm not the first to think of the idea though.
Think NCIS:LA or similar where you move things around on screen and select things in screen with hand movements on the air. No mouse, no laser pointer, no remote.

You want to want to select a certain on screen feature or play the movie or whatever. All done with hand gestures in the air.

Siri on the other hand would be very good for digital radio and the vision impaired. "Siri go to 97.3FM please". And it would. Or "Siri play my iTunes random list through my Apple TV". And it will.

Siri will get better with time I am sure. This is only the beginning baby footsteps into intelligent conversation with machines. In the future I'm sure we'll have good conversations with them. And they'll understand humans as well as LT Commander Data would. Siri is not perfect because it is new. But it has massive potential. And it really makes me excited.

not even gonna lie, reading these rumors reminds me of hearing about what become the iPad rumors back in '08-'09

Will you have to push a button on the remote to activate Siri?

Yes

So you think you would have to find the remote and then have to press a button on the remote to use Siri, so I don't have to worry about pressing a button on the remote.

That would be amazing :D
