Just the addition of a mic on the remote control would work better than a clumsy headset :p

I would love a TV without the need of any control remote. It's a mess having many of them, and the universal ones are pretty lame, IMO.

I guess another solution could be to have a port installed on the TV where an Apple TV type product could plug into it which would allow the "brains" of the TV to be inexpensively replaced without replacing the whole TV as a unit.

Interesting idea.

Slide in your ipad and it becomes the brain.

Or heck, your iPad/iPhone/iPod is the TV brain and the AppleTV is merely a wireless monitor mounted on the wall.

The "remote" is the "TV"

I really hope they follow the Steve Jobs philosophy of not releasing it unless it is near perfect

I love Apple products because they work so well... I don't need a new TV but having a better working interface might make me get this. As long as their quality is as high as it has always been..

Spend a little more money on a great universal remote. I've owned those from Universal Remote Control for years. They truly are "one remote to rule them all". With programmable macros to turn everything on & off with one button and "learn" functions so that new device remotes can be imported, just one remote can control everything. I have the MX-800 myself.

Only works if you are single living alone. Else, your mobile device will never be mobile again OR when you get back home after taking the brains of the TV with you, you'll deal with the hate. An Apple Television or next gen :apple:TV can never depend on iDevices for this reason. They can't be the TV or the (only) remote. Instead, iDevices are always relegated to nice bonuses.

I'm one of the millions of TiVo HD users who would disagree with that.

When I got my TiVo HD I went to the local ComCast outlet to get the two CableCards (it has dual tuners, so needs two decoders).

The woman at the ComCast counter said - no, you don't need two cards. Here's the new dual card (two decoders on one card). Plugged it in 5 years ago, and not a bit of trouble.

My M-stream Cable Card works like a champ in my TivoHD. Unfortunately the hardware integration process is a real pain and if Apple wasn't willing to add HDCP to OS X for Blu-ray support, there is NO WAY they will bother with Cable Card integration.

Ahh, so your issue is that it is Apple that would receive the money. To me, my money is gone, so why should it bother me that Apple has it over Comcast or Sony?

Sometimes putting all of your eggs in one basket isn't a good idea.

Sooooo it's "definitely" coming because...he believes it will? OK then. All I see happening is more AAPL stock crashes every time this mythical Apple television fails to make an appearance at Apple events.

It's a no brainier, people said the same about iPad... Siri controlled TV is the future, it's what we all want.. Even if some of us do not know it.

I don't really get what advantage it would be to build this into a TV set instead of making it a set-top box. Then people could choose the TV with the picture they like best instead of relying on Apple's choice.

The Apple Televison set will be to the current AppleTV, as the iMac is to the Mac Mini. Both will exist. One will be an all-in-one, but I predict that Apple will make an option available for those who also want this with their existing set.

Microphone in the TV. I talk to my Xbox using kinect, no headset. It's doable.

Excellent idea.

Everything being iOS, you'll be able to talk to all of it... Talk into your iPhone to control the TV, music, Calendar, sending emails via TV... Record 'Boardwalk Empire season 6' etc all to iCloud... I can visualise the messages and reminders for meetings tomorrow and emails, notifications all popping up on your TV, not just iPhone, iPad... All sounds logical... Can't wait.

Yes Exactly that, that's how many PC users migrated, by keeping their old display.

I agree.

You really think Siri would be able to "Record Parks and Recreation at 8:30 on NBC"? And also FYI, people with a 4S will tell you that using Siri will save you a maximum of a few seconds. It's not worth it.

I've just upgraded to a 4S, I probably wouldn't have done unless my girlfriend needed my iPhone 4 as she lost hers a while back.

I thought Siri was a bit crap at first, it's not a tool to use with other folks around as it throws it. After 1 week, I've started using it for reminders, get black pepper corns, buy that headlight bulb for the car, reminders are great, when you can't be arsed to make a note. Sending an email works so well! Sending texts works great... Remember it's BETA, it's early days... Our voice is the ultimate interactive tool, don't be down on Siri because it's here to stay. Embrace and try it you might be surprised like me.

Holy crap!! I looked at those logitech harmony remotes and some of them are freaking expensive!! There was one for over $300!! A REMOTE!!

I think your comment is totally stupid because you launch the easy ad-hominem rather than make an intelligent case why a Siri enable TV would be worthless.

If you can explain your reasoning, great. But, I'm guessing you can't.

Personally, it's seems like a brilliant idea because it accomplishes Apple's stated mission set out a decade ago, the creation of a digital hub. With Siri + iCloud plugged into nearly every major digital device (phone, TV, computer, iPad) you can literally start watching a show on TV, stop, and then resume later on a completely different devise. When an idea pops in your head while watching TV you can tell Siri to make a note of it and it will show up on your computer and iPhone. And Siri potentially could do away w/ the need for remotes. Just tell it to "record The Office," and done. Menu drill down days banished.

My thoughts exactly +1

I've been a naysayer of apple television, but this I believe. The tv version of iPhone!

Just the addition of a mic on the remote control would work better than a clumsy headset :p

A couple of companies have added microphones to the remote control. Here's one that controls MS Media Center. Another one is more expandable, as it sends the request up to the cable company where its server can do more recognition and searching (just as Siri does).

Of course, no mike would be better, but I see several problem scenarios:

1) Talking over the noise of the TV itself. I suppose some active canceling could help there.

2) Talking while your partner is asleep next to you :) Better quietly use the remote buttons instead!

3) Surfing. Every red blooded male on the planet knows his remote controls by heart, and can surf channels at the speed of light via familiar buttons. Can't visualize doing that with voice. Unless they just show tiny panels of many shows at once or something not as easy to see.

All that aside, my wife hates remotes and would love to be able to just say "Record Castle tomorrow night" and later say "Play yesterday's Castle".

Apple will invent it and everything else will be a copy. Just like everything else.

I'm interested to see people try to copy Siri, I think the software will be leaps ahead of everything next year... People on here are saying XBox does it already, but can you send a clear concise email on an Xbox to someone in your contact list?

Will the TV come with a remote?

Yes

Will you have to push a button on the remote to activate Siri?

Yes

Will the whole thing be a complete failure?

Yes
