well the iBooks are gonna stay around for a while after the release of the MacBook so this isnt surprising at all. I wouldnt think a thing of it.

Why would you think that? That hasn't been true of any other line yet, the Intel version have been replacements for the PowerPC ones. Only the PowerBook G4 didn't disappear immediately, and that was due to the fact that there were two other models in that lineup. The 15" PowerBook was no longer being produced once the MacBook Pro was announced, same with the iMac and Mac Mini.

The iMac G5 was available after the intel was announced...

We'll know soon...

OMG the Apple Store is down!!!1!

Just kidding.

I'm still keeping to my 50% prediction (actually, I'll extend it and say it's 50% chance of a release this week. That's a deprecation of the chance that it'll be today.)

E3's the wrong venue for a laptop of this likely spec, but it's clear Apple has set something up for E3, even if it's minor. It may be a new product, it may be a display of iMacs set up to demonstrate the Mac's gaming ability. If it's a new product, it might be a MacBook. Or it might be a Mac mini with decent graphics. Or it might be an iGame (ha.)

Additionally, reports that Apple Stores had been encouraged to push iBooks last weekend go against a release this week (they'd want more than one weekend and two week days to get rid of excess inventory.)

But... a venue's a venue. E3 is certainly an opportunity for them. The signs are against this being appropriate, but the MacBook's coming out soon.

At last someone has the guts to say it. Welcome to Earth, Macheads! ;) :D

It wont happen anytime soon. Seems like ibooks were still produced last month.. maybe next month then..

why would apple stop producing the powerpc's? people are still loyal to them, not to mention the fact that there is a populus that is afraid of the glitches and debugging of the new intels.

the powerpc's are still selling, thats why they are still being produced. supply and demand.

additionally, it creates a seamless integration with the new product.

ex: Selling-Selling-Selling /switch to new/ Selling-Selling-Selling

p.s. those "hello, i'm a mac" ads are starting to get irritating. they have to be on the verge of a new release, i'll stop going to apple.com

well i heard (cant remember from what tho...sorry) that the iBooks will be on sale for a month or two after the MacBook release, but only the 12" will be available. I think they're doing this to liquidate their inventory. They will also be chaper (like $799).

The one thing in the GP's favour is that the MacBook isn't a direct replacement for the iBook. I can see them dropping prices on the iBook if the MacBook turns out to start above the $1,000 mark, and selling it for a few more months, just to keep an oar in the budget laptop market.

In an environment where "cheap" means $500, and "value" means $750, they can't desert the sub-$1,000 price range completely.

Bold prediction. I'd say you can't be wrong. 'Soon' is sufficiently vague. Anyway, Apple's waiting to put Meroms into MacBook Pros, so they can put Core Duos into the iBooks. There, I said it. Probability ? Proof ? Gimme a break. A self-proclaimed Rumor God doesn't need those... just a little luck :p

They've stopped production of PPC:

Mac mini
iMac
15" and 17" PowerBook

PPC production stops with the introduction of the Intel models. The G5 iMac hung around till excess stock was cleared. The iBook, 12" PowerBook, PowerMac and xServe are still being made because no Intel option exists to replace them. The iBook will disappear when it's Intel replacement arrives as will all the others.

this was a post form Kiayraa on digg.com (in response to the "macbook plus")

I'm calling this legit. (That's right, you heard me, before anyone can call it fake.)

If someone really wanted to mock up a store page with a minor MacBook slip, it would have just been MacBook there. There was NO speculation about the Plus and there it is.

This just makes me all the more excited to see it. Maybe the Plus is the black MacBook? Or maybe the MacBook is just a standard laptop and the Plus is a MacBook with an iSight and whatnot... Hmm. Your move Steve.

interesting idea.

i never saw the picture from digg.com cuz im not a member (it asked me to sign in)....anyone have a pic I (as well as many others) can see?

Nah, it's a fake. They could've just picked MacBook nano for all we know. I showed earlier how easy it was to do a mock up of the store. FAKE.

Or it could just mean that someone thought they'd be inventive to cause extra speculation.

true. All Rumorists have the tendancy to twist information.

on a side note: i hope all this discussion isn't in vain, because if it is, there has to be someone (most likely a higher-up) in the mac community laughing their ass off at us. (as well as the rest of the world involved in this)

Looks like we're not getting anything new today. Apple's site would have been updated by now.

AppleInsider is right more than 99% of the time, so this is no surprise because of the rumor last night.

You can't rely on rumors

as we've seen here, the macbooks did not arrive. Every Mac website in the world said they would. I was so excited.:)

Not worth looking at, and it didn't ask me to sign in, I just clicked on the title of the story linked in the post. It was just the current store page with "MacBook plus" and "MacBook" listed underneath the MacBook Pro in the Intel section. No images, no more info, I did a mock up in a similar vein with "MorkBook nanoo" and others that look exactly the same as the Digg image.

Someone just downloaded the page in Firefox and used GoLive or something to alter HTML - it's really, really easy.

If you want a demonstration I'll make a 23" iMac appear in the list and post a screenshot....
