Macbook Pro isn't black behind the screen. HP Envy is.

Also, take a look at this laptop from 2007, before the Macbook pro had that design:

This is a Macbook Pro:

I'd say it looks similar except with the black on the sides.

Apple wasn't the first with that design. So, Apple "copied" it.

Black BORDER, not BACKGROUND. That laptop is just black except for the keyboard, so the plastic part with the screen on it is black. The MBP as well as the HP knockoff have a black glass border around the screen with the same width all around and a silver body. The black border is added just in that spot. It's not the body color. Also, it's glass, not plastic.

On top of that, the rest of the body is a copy, especially the black, lit keys.

Or to put it into better terms:

The Envy is aptly named. HP envies Apple's design.

Apple going to beat Dell in 2014.

Who's laughing now, Michael Dell.

Let us know when Apple starts selling millions of business class computers and business servers...and...well...selling to businesses. Apple doesn't...and never really has. A few years ago Apple stopped selling it's X series boxes...and Apple has no business Tech Support (remember that article last year about Apple opening some kind of Small Business Tech Support and it got ripped to shreds on this website).

I don't love Dell...but please don't think Apple is going to somehow going to gain huge marketshare by selling ONLY to consumers.

Until Apple enters the business market AND WILDLY SUCCEEDS IN THE BUSINESS MARKET, it will never dominate worldwide personal computer marketshare...because personal computers are used at the office as well as in the home. 3rd place is certainly not bad, however. There simply aren't enough consumers out there buying Macs to counterbalance the billions of Wintels (and Linux) boxes sold to businesses AND consumers.

There are enough consumers to keep Apple happy for a long time...but not all consumers can or wish to spend 2x more for a Mac...regardless of the supposed benefits. Sooner or later, Apple's "well" will dry up...that well is the consumer base that wishes to spend roughly 2x the money for a personal computer.

I don't care if it's a border or background. It looks similar to a Macbook Pro, but it came out when the Macbook Pro was still all white.

Apple has stolen ideas (Android notifications for one) and I do acknowledge that. But I don't believe they do it as much or as direct (physical designs) as companies are doing it to Apple today.

Except many of the bits that people say are stolen from Andriod, were in Newton OS. Just saying. Think about how long ago the Newton was. It was only a couple off years of primetime yet here we are many many years later and it's only seeming like primetime now for much of the intended Newton target function.

The problem is the market pushes for mono-cultures but at the same time a mono-culture stifles innovation and market growth. Which is the problem "market share" as a metric if it's not reflective of value/profit/revenue/third party opportunity which it hasn't been for a long time.

sorry armchair economics rant.

Newton OS has pull down notifications?

That Dell doesn't look anything like a current MBP IMO. Sure it has a black bezel and a black keyboard, but that's where the similarities end. The bottom part is black. They look like two different products to me.

And the MBP was always made out of aluminum. It was never white.

Now that's a very nasty attitude - HOPING for lawsuits.

Why not?

That doesn't mean he's just saying that as a fanboy who wishes Apple sold more computers.

Even as a consumer, whether you buy Apple computers or not, you are hurt by that kind of phenomenon. If it becomes too easy to copy, that's all the manufacturers will do, and you will see much less innovation. If Apple was the only company trying new things, they couldn't even be inspired by what the others do and even their products would progress more slowly. At least if computers with new form factor/design/features would come out Apple would have more pressure to release new models. Now they don't even have nothing revolutionary to change to their computers since years and they still look like they have the best computers just because of the other companies' behavior.

By copying the MBP, the other manufacturers are admitting that the perfect computer in 2012 is one that has been designed in 2008. They don't even try to prove they can come up better computers, they're just like "Okay so let's make something as similar as possible and a bit cheaper and people will bite since they love Macs yet think they are expensive." That's not really competition, and competition is a good thing in this industry.

I'm not saying that all PCs imitate Macs, but it's without a doubt increasingly common and at one point it will have to stop getting worse for the sake of innovation in the whole computer industry.

I know, that's why I said similar. HP Envy looks similar to a MBP, but not exactly the same.

I was saying that they don't look all that similar. When comparing laptops you have to be strict because most laptops look similar. There is only so many things you can do to differentiate between other OEM's.

The HP Envy looks almost exactly like the MBP on the inside. But when the lid is closed it doesn't look a MBP. When closed, the top looks like it is black plastic instead of aluminum.

Similar: having a likeness or resemblance, especially in a general way.

The Dell looks similar to the MBP because of the black border around the screen and the black keyboard and the grey outside of the keyboard.

You're crazy if you think the Envy looks exactly like the Macbook Pro on the inside. They don't.

I didn't say exactly the same. I said "almost exactly" the same. That leaves some room for differences. Also, I wasn't thinking of that version of the Envy. I was thinking of this one...

Yes, there are differences such as the tacky Beats Audio volume knob and the full keyboard, but it's similar enough for me to consider it "almost exactly" the same aesthetically (on the inside). I mean, can you honestly say with a straight face that HP designed this all by themselves without any input from a MBP?

Also, is it just me, or is there something funky going on with the trackpad in your picture of that MBP? I have one (and have seen tons of them) and not once have I ever seen that little bar on the bottom of it.

I totally agree. It is shameful how much PCs are knocking of Macs. It's just crazy to me that Apple is the only device maker for its operating systems and the entire rest of the industry is trying to play catch up with one company.

Almost exactly the same=similar. I think HP got inspired by the MBP making a similar laptop, but not exactly alike.

For example. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Got inspired by the iPad, looks similar, but not exactly alike.

Well, when does inspiration turn into copying in your opinion? Does it have to be exactly 100% the same? You think HP was "inspired" but lots of other people think they "copied", I guess.

Yes, it has to be exactly the same. Or else, Apple copied the LG Prada, the joojoo tablet, or anything else that looks similar to any Apple product that came out before Apple did it.

Jobs goal was never to make the Macintosh for the business market, he wanted to make a computer for the general public. I would say the mentality has stuck with the company today. Why would they sucede in a market they really aren't after?

You say inspiration I say imitation. Like I said, it seems like there are some companies that sit back and let Apple do much of the innovating and simply rip-off their research and development for their own.

Hate it, disagree or downrank.. But right now, this occurrence is extremely prevalent.

Drop down menu from a star that appeared in the centre of the status bar when the non active app had something to tell you.

Interesting, did not know this.

I always loved their system boards, always the best design and quality. Total pieces of art. I actually owned several of these.

Too bad they couldn't resist the temptation to clone the MacBook Air.
That made them loose most of my respect for them.
Just wait a while for them to reverse-engineer the Apple TouchPad. Then they will make a nice copy of it.

Eh. Copy? Sorta, I guess. I'd say it's more an issue of not having much room for variance once you get down to a certain size. If you go with a tapered bottom on a laptop that small, (which Apple wasn't the first to use, by the way) the end result is gonna end up looking similar to the Air.

It's the same reason why all tablets look about the same. There's not much you can do with a screen you hold in your hand.

Well, you be the judge. The resemblance is too close to be unintentional.

*Shakes his head at all the disingenuous spin trying to deny HP's aping Apple laptops design...*
