It is very unlikely that there will be anything other than a software fix.

There is some broken hardware, for sure, and that will be replaced as normal. Perhaps some gift certificate may be offered in that case, as a gesture of goodwill?

to the op, what city you in?

to everyone else who can confirm, where are you guys from as well?

How is Apple going to ship free bumpers to everyone if that can't even supply enough of them without offering them for free? If this does happen, don't expect your bumper any time soon. I'm already using a Griffin Reveal Slimfit case which has the rubberized material around the frame as well as a plastic backing to protect the back of the phone. It's actually pretty decent.

I am not sure this will happen either, but it will not be because of the cost of the bumpers. They probably cost Apple $3-$4 each so it would be a pretty cheap solution.

However, it would likely take them a good amount of time to make that many bumpers, so I don't think that is likely to happen. Guess we will see.

Those who are expecting some kind of hardware recall are also likely dreaming.

Stop holding your phone like that!

That's not how it works. It might cost Apple 3-4 dollars to make, but the true cost to Apple IS $29 per bumper given out. Anyone here who has taken business classes will confirm this. This quite an expensive solution, and given such, I don't expect this to happen. I suppose we will revisit this tomorrow.

I also get a free bumper case

I call applecare at about the same time as the OP, on hold time was less than 1 min, talk to a very nice lady and we go thru the basic diagnostic step, remove and reinsert sim, turn on and off 3g and also reboot, of course nothing help with the reception problem, she put me on hold for ~5Min to talk to a senior tech person (Derek)
Without me saying a word, he kind of admit that it is a know problem and he also offer to send me a free bumper case, and only black is available at this moment.
I also ask if by receiving the free bumper case, do I waive my right in the future, if apple decide to recall or repair the iphone for the reception problem, and he said no problem and I am entitle for all the future benefit/fix, the free bumper case is only for lessen the reception problem.:apple:

People that are probably paying $30/month for their data plan are whining about not getting a free bumper. Toss in the troll posts from the 'expert' who says it's a hardware problem and Apple is going to recall all the phone and you have a typical MR thread.

if true, I wonder if people who buy the White iPhone next month will have the option to get a free bumper on the spot?

Also, why would Apple be giving out free bumpers, according to Steve Jobs "There are no reception issues. Stay Tuned." :D

How many threads do we have now about Apple's action regarding this problem? Let me see if I can recall all of them:

1. CONFIRMED: $200 gift cards
2. CONFIRMED: Recall of affected units
3. CONFIRMED: $175 gift card + bumper
4. CONFIRMED: Gift Cards + Free Bumper
5. CONFIRMED: Free Bumper
6. CONFIRMED: Free back massages to all buyers

I just spoke to a senior support person and he told me that they are being advised NOT to send out bumpers and the engineers are working through the weekend to get a fix.

Yeah, and for some reason everyone seems to be buying into this one... Whether this happens or not people need to realize that no matter what is said, those people on the other end of the phone know nothing more then we do right now.

No, they are out what they pay to make it. When you have a product that does NOT work, this is indeed the cheapest solution...as opposed to issuing a massive recall on these devices

And apparently everyone that calls Apple gets a 'senior support person' or a manager. Magical!

CONFIRMED:

Ok, so i just got off the phone...30 minute phone call mind you. The rep and the "supervisor'' stated that they are not at liberty to give statements. Basically they can be fired if they release a public statement without the proper authority. The rep said he finds things out as soon as we do...sometimes after we do. In conclusion...no free bumper for me, no gift card...no back massage...no free headphones...nada!

I make the call to applecare with no intention for a free case, I only want to have my reception problem on file just in case they have a fix, I even told them I don't have a drop call yet, only voice call cutting in and out when bridging both the antenna and they just offer me the free case.
