LGBT people aren't in competition with veterans. There are all kinds of "months" for various causes and subjects that could be subordinate to veterans. April is "Confederate History Month"; maybe you all could repurpose that to focus on veterans.

Because I don't see it that way. Even if there is an economic motivation behind it, they certainly know they alienate people by supporting pride, so it cannot purely be about expanding their market. Tim Cook is a member of the LGBT community, so I do think that he has personal support for pride and I'm fine with companies showing support for it, whatever other motives may be behind it.

"alienate people by supporting". Whoah man, those people alienated need to take some therapy and come to terms with why the plight of others and support for others is hurtful in any way to them!

I'd like to see Armed Forces Appreciation Month; also I'd like to see Emergency Services Appreciation Month.

I'd love to see short, bald old Guys month. I could use some support!

I don't need it, but I like it. I like knowing that society is more accepting of LGBT people than ever before.

It's just a weird thing to say. "Thank you for supporting me". As if we have some kind of illness or disease.

The longer us gay people are shown to be different, requiring our own special month, just for us, the longer it'll take for being gay to be normalised.

Interesting point I must say. Are you say that Pride Month has outlived its purpose?

You can be "normalized" while still celebrating your differences.

when is straight month? JK
Never! We are nobody here. LGBRTSBLABLABLA (I always get so confused how to spell it) is an only one-way street man.

You can have straight pride month after decades of having heterosexuality being illegal, people refusing to serve you in stores, hospitals, and anywhere that a service is provided, and get beaten up or killed just for being straight. Until then, ****. And yes, I'm straight.

Plus, look at TV shows and movies. Sure, there's an upsurge in the number of gay characters. You may feel the gay agenda is forced down your throat, but look at how many straight family programs there are. And even non-family based shows/movies, how often are a male & female lead/supporting character in a "Will they or won't they hook up?" situation. And a lot of the gay characters are shown as the flamboyantly, flaming gay and not as as "normal" people.

Since when are Armed forces and emergency services a class of oppressed people who aren't afforded the same rights as the majority of Americans?
Please explain to me the remaining rights withheld from gays that are afforded to the rest of Americans? Marriage was the last big thing and we know how Obama handled that.

Oppression? Monsters like Hitler literally had homosexuals executed. I think we forget where we were as a world only three generations ago. Give me a break.

Based on some replies here...

This pride bs is ridiculous. Human from more than 1000s of years are straight men and women. Only in the latest decades people started to think that they are not in the correct body. Get yourself together and behave as you were created... this is so wrong...

You know, I had this long reply ready to go, but then though, "I am not going to change this person's mind, so why even bother". You are entitled to your opinion that you are giving, even though (based on your comment) you are not part of the LGBTQ community.

My favorite part of homophobia is that most of its practitioners believe that an unmarried 34 year old middle eastern jewish liberal man who liked sandals, famous last dinner parties, and traveled with an exclusively male entourage his entire life, has taught them that homosexuality is wrong.

You clearly need to do research.... Two Spirits have always skirted the norm of gender (google it), Homosexuality has been apart of people's culture for 1000s of years (google it). Once you have made any effort to learn before you speak, you should probably avoid topics that trigger you.

P.S. I was created gay.... not a choice.

I think so. I don't think having a whole month was ever necessary, or even a good idea.

You can be "normalized" while still celebrating your differences.

No you can't. The longer gay people have our own special "month" the longer it'll take for us to be seen as just the same as everyone else.

Congratulations. You have no idea what you're talking about. Are you from the middle east/Africa/Russia by any chance?

THIS.

As a somewhat conservative straight guy, I RARELY say anything in these topical areas, but something happened last year around this time that created a check point for me...

I live in Austin and work as an engineer. On the weekends, I drive Uber / Lyft / and Ride Austin (the best one if you visit here). Not long after our Pride parade last year, I picked up a very sharp business man and thought as I pulled up "either this guy stepped straight out of a GQ shoot, or he's gay".

(Yes, it was a stereotypical thing to think. I am guilty. Sorry!)

He happened to be gay and cool as heck. We talked about our jobs and what we were doing that day and he mentioned getting dinner with his husband. Perfectly normal tone, and our conversation continued without a beat. Eventually, we talked about the traffic mess the previous weekend due to the parade, and I asked him if he had participated in the recent Pride events...

His response was almost visceral. He made it VERY clear that in he and his husbands opinion, the Supreme Court had addressed the rights they most coveted in 2015 and that it was time to focus on being equal members of society and not continuing to advertise for or demand something they already have.

I agree.

No you can't. The longer gay people have our own special "month" the longer it'll take for us to be seen as just the same as everyone else.

We're not just the same, though. You can't just pretend there are no differences.

The month is also not just for gay people. It's for a wide range of people within the LGBTQ community. Gay people may now have the right to marry, but that doesn't mean the fight is over for all the other groups.

Straight people have the rest of the year for themselves. We have plenty of days for veterans and all the other groups mentioned here. Maybe once we are all treated equally and with dignity we will not have a Pride month. Until then, no one has any room to complain.

There’s literally so much wrong with this. I don’t even know where to begin
