I know a lot of these rumors end up not being true, but a lot of evidence points to this year's upcoming iPhone having largely the same design as this year's. As a result, here's my small prediction: the next iPhone will not be called iPhone 7, but rather iPhone 6SE and iPhone 6SE+. The 2017 model with the thinner bezel and Touch ID incorporated into the screen will be the iPhone 7.

No way they will have a "special edition" iPhone 6 released the year after the 6 series. They will most likely call it the 7, and then the 7S may have a special name because it'll be the 10th anniversary of iPhone. Keeping the iPhone 7 simple, with only minor physical changes will give Apple the chance to make a really bad ass, OLED, edge to edge, bezeless, curved sapphire phone next year for the 10 year mark. If this is the plan I am all for it. But they better bring that wow factor in 17. Because investors and customers a like will not be very happy this year.

With all due respect your problem is with your employer, not Apple.
Anything to defend Apple's ridiculous gouging of their consumers. If Samsung were releasing devices with base storage at 16gb, they'd be derided as cheap and useless, out of touch with reality. Apple does it; it's a smart business move and "your employer" is the problem, not Apple. What an outrageous assertion-- Apple could have done numerous things to alleviate the situation, the most obvious being to simply eliminate the horrendous 16GB option as the base model-- flash chips literally cost a FEW dollars today. Samsung only has one storage model in the GS7 line, and it is 32gb-- but users can take heart that it has an (as yet unlimited) ability to expand its storage via MicroSD to 200gb plus; I just picked up a 64gb SDXC card for mine for 22 dollars shipped on Amazon.

There is no excuse for Apple other than relentless pursuit of profit while not giving a single f*** about consumers.

There is NOTHING in Android superior to iOS...

Vanilla Android is acceptable, at best. TouchWiz ..... wow, pure garbage. And being tied to Google ecosystem is just insane for me.

What is the purpose of the pic you posted?

Apple should supply only a single top storage level for each iPhone model at the lowest price making storage specs non existent.

For example with the current line up:

iPhone SE - should be $399 (includes 64GB, not $499 )
iPhone 6s - should be $649 (includes 128GB, not $849)
iPhone 6s Plus - should be $749 (includes 128GB, not $949)

Having a range of storage capacities means that Apple makes more money per device. Why would they want to significantly lower their margins for what would, most likely, result in only a modest increase in market share?

Apple prices their products in order to make profits. They're not a charity that exists to provide the highest-spec phones to you at the lowest possible price.

Your (erroneous) assertions would have more credibility if there weren't higher storage options available from Apple. My iPhone 6S has 128 gb storage, and I'm happy with that. Since you're obviously a Samsung/Android fan, perhaps that's your answer.

I don't hang out at Samsung/Android sites talking about how horrible they are, I ignore them since they're not relevant to me.

Isn't it amazing how as soon as Apple might be releasing it, OLED and curved edge displays instantly undergo an entire paradigm shift from being flashy, useless gimmicks and inferior designs to "OMG APPLE IS RELEASING IT OMG OMG I WANT IT TAKE MY MONEY."?

I held off on the 6S+ because I wanted the new 7 model. However, if the new 7 isn't a new design then I'll hold off another year. Sigh. I hope this is a false rumor as I've been looking towards this September for over a year now.

I was drawn here after reading tech news on Google this morning; sorry to crash your party. I was shocked how much this new iPhone sounded identical to the fantastic Galaxy S7 Edge I just purchased; then I read this article and saw the renderings in the thread... at first, I thought someone just took pictures of the GS7 edge and photoshopped them. And apparently Apple is the innovator... right?

Oh, and the defense of Apple with their multiple storage options, in which their price tiers bear no actual resemblance to hardware cost, you merely point out another example of blatant consumer gouging-- oh, you want another 48gb of storage so your device is actually useable in the modern world? We know it costs us 4$ to upgrade, but we'll take 100--- you would never actually BUY that ****** 16gb base model anyway, now would you?! So what's $100 between friends.

Significantly smaller than the current 5.5 inch?

Shouldn't be hard to do. My 6" Nexus 6 was smaller than the 5.5 inch iPhone. It has too much chin, bezel, and forehead. The home button hinders apple's love of making things smaller. (Oh wait, it's thinner they always push...)

I think LG nailed it with the home, power button on the back. I had an LG, went to the nexus, missed the back button and was excited to be back with an LG again. (Almost went back to an iPhone when they got larger....) If Apple did something similar, it would help with that size. The iPhones are ironically huge for their screen sizes compared to competing phones.

Wait, how is the Nexus 6 smaller than the 6s Plus? I agree that the iPhone 6s Plus should have less bezel and therefore have a smaller footprint for the 5.5" screen (that's my wishlist for the phone coming out this fall). But, the Nexus 6 is slightly bigger than the 6s Plus.

I get what you are saying though. They are pretty close in size, especially considering the Nexus 6 has a 6" screen!

The Galaxy Note 5 is actually smaller than the iPhone 6s plus yet has a 5.7'' screen, larger battery, and stylus.

Hey, I get that. My point is counting and promoting gb of storage is as pointless today as counting and promoting CPU ghz.

Not sure what your issue is here, if you don't like it don't buy it. We have choice, and millions have decided the iPhone offers value for the amount spent. Perhaps you think it would make more sense to buy components individually and build your own one-off phone?

Good luck with that.

Of course people have choices, that is fine, and the competition between Apple, Samsung and other manufacturers has yielded some excellent devices. But, let's call a spade a spade and realize that Samsung has leapfrogged Apple in terms of innovation and value by delivering cutting edge designs with consumer friendly features, which is exemplified in the S7 Edge. It is nauseauting to see the persistent rejection of reality with Apple fans; it's as if any move Apple makes as a company (even releasing a 3 year old design with a basic CPU upgrade... still using a 640p screen) is the right move and all competitors are idiots until Apple uses their ideas, then they become the innovator of said ideas and of course do a much better job implementing it than the company they stole it from. Surely, this will be the fanboy case for why Apple using a curved screen and AMOLED display is finally worthwhile; Samsung are just a bunch of barbarians who couldn't implement it properly and had the audacity to offer the design with expandable storage, foolishly not forcing consumers to waste cash on superfluous tiered storage pricing.

great. not my point. The OP said the N6 was smaller than the iPhone 6s Plus. I was just pointing out the error. I really do wish Apple would fit a larger screen in the 6s body or make the 6s Plus body with a smaller overall footprint with the same screen size.

I just wanted to make it clear that designing a phone with an excellent screen:bezel ratio is old news for anyone using Android for the past 2 years.

This would be an Apple that thinks different, not same same.

Pour that cup of tea, friend and come into March 2016.

I'm glad you aren't Apple's CEO...

reality check: EVERY manufacturer charges 80-100$ going from basic to upgraded storage.

OK, so it's been decided. This year I get the SE. Wait out September and get the ten year anniversary device ESPECIALLY if it's reminiscent of the iPhone 4 design.
Looks like I'll be saving money in 2016.

Reality check: EVERY other flagship in 2016 offers 32gb of storage as a base model and many offer expandable storage with dirt cheap microsd. I'm glad you're not the CEO of every other company competing in this space; I wouldn't want to be gouged!

Can't resist.

My God, it is full of stars!

A totaly black iPhone with a seamless OLED screen? Please, take my money! Cant wait to see a moving wallpaper on a device like that!

Edit:
I couldn't resist to make a quick mock-up about my idea of a totaly black OLED iPhone. Would love to see it blacker than black.

What is it with so much fascination for Apple's old designs? Have Apple fans lost faith in the company to develop something truly new and innovative? It's an odd phenomenon to me to see people essentially begging a company to re-release something it's already released rather than truly deliver something nascent. I know, Apple's designs were so great they couldn't possibly be topped; that's a rather pessimistic perspective on the most magical company on earth :p

I'm quite tired of people saying "you don't know Samsung and Android"...
I'm using android since 1.5, and being "forced" to use Samsung's products (smartphones and tablets) due to an arrangement in my organization.... plus, being a tech enthusiast, I bought several Google products just to give them a try (Nexus 5 and Nexus 7) .... So YES, I definitely know Android and Samsung better than most of the supporters here. And that reinforced my bad opinion about it.

Samsung released 32 Gb so full of crapware that it was basically the same ....
And , again, keep speaking about SD Cards just make me laugh more.

Could you imagine me posting on Android central how the "shiny" S7 throttles like hell after 20 minutes of gaming ?

The common sense here is: ok, we hope Apple will do that in a better way than Samsung's gimmick edge model.

If it doesn't fit your needs (nor mine), doesn't mean it is the same for the rest of the world...

What makes you laugh about SD cards? They are extremely fast today (100mb/s write speed for mine), and tiny, and convient, and the phone is still waterproof with them. I guess you're laughing because you don't have the option. At worst, the GS7/Edge have 8gb of bloat on them, leaving you with 24gb free space + expandable, 1.5 times that of the basic iPhone.
