You should look at Adobe and HP

You guys are all "jumpin' up and down yellin' KILL! KILL! KILL!" about the Apple update adding a new piece of software. You guys should try looking at your Adobe updater. Not only does it REALLY want you to have Google Toolbar, but also have the Desktop as well. I don't need my system indexed, I know where I put my crud. As for HP, install a new printer, select the "I don't need your updater software, I can get new drivers myself" click the next few buttons, and low and behold the software runs right out to HP and get the damn software you just told it not to install. Oh, and if you skip that part, you can kiss your multi-function good-bye. You will have a very nice printer and fax machine, but none of it will properly integrate with your PC. Then you have the other "updaters" that come with several other software packages that don't seem to know what "NEVER UPDATE" means.

Apple may have made a small bad move here, but if I am forced to get an Apple product, at least I can be relatively assured that it won't cause my computer to meltdown.

NB

what's the big deal if it's checked already? doesn't that reduce the need to actually check it? remember, apple is about simplicity and reducing steps and automation...

dear Firefox, i would use your browser if high frame rates for Flash were supported.

so many apple apologist, lol, if apple were right, why did it even make this change.

bunch of mac people try to show superiority to windows users, mark my words, blacklash is the only result from this practice.

What's wrong with it? You could argue the same about Safari and its lack of anti phishing.

I say get rid of anti-phishing; if you're too silly not to double check the legitimacy of the website, quite frankly, you deserve all your money to be taken off you.

Which should be included by default; why include the US dictionary by default but not the UK? the UK is the most well used one globally, so why not?

if you are so confident, why don't you put an ads out and glorify safari's lack of functionality on this. lets see how many people buy it.

why don't you download UK version of firefox then? firefox is optimized for 40+ languages, who told you en-US is by default offered for global users?

Uhm, Microsoft DOES do the same thing; Internet Explorer is bundled in as a "security update" and not very prominently either if you have a long list of updates to apply.

I have to agree with Asa. It's annoying and really just bad behaviour from Apple. If Microsoft was doing the same thing we'd be bashing them to oblivion.

To be fair the Firefox 3 beta is US english only, but it is a beta.

Hahaha! Oh man, that has to be the quote of the year!
Yea, im sure Apple left it checked by default for "simplicity" purposes.
Oh man, some Mac users just crack me up.

Utter false morality garbage

Perhaps Apple should put an X in the box and recommend that users search the net for alternatives before downloading Safari?

The moral high ground, abandoned by Microsoft many years ago, but a must-have for Apple fans? I think not.

This is a NON-story, a NON-issue, except for some insane Apple fans with dreams of Apple as the new Martin Luther or some such twaddle.

Its a computer company - nothing more. If you want morality and principled behaviour, I humbly suggest that Fortune 500 companies AINT the best place to look....

Dumbest thread ever - danger of becoming 'offended' - level 10!

STILL getting it wrong. It shouldn't be ticked by default. Offer it, by all means, but how dare Apple presume people want it

How dare you write this inane comment?
Oh, I guess you just dared - ! Wow! Hold the frickin' front page!

Gosh, I think I am going to dare to go to work, which is where all you offended people should be, because you obviously have WAY too much time on your hands.

This might be the DUMBEST thread ever.

Bunch of inflated egos at work, being 'offended' by Apple.

Go out and give a homeless person a buck and stop WHINING.

Exactly. I think it should be checked off by default with maybe a line that invites them to try Safari too or something

I'm glad PayPal is about to block Safari because of that. Now maybe Apple will get off their butts and fix it!

Be honest, do you think that if Apple unchecked Safari by default or even better don't even put Safari in Windows software update that Windows users would actually proactively decide to try out Safari? No. This entire discussion has proven that, the majority of the Windows lovers on this forum have been verbal that they hate Apple and their software (why they post on this forum beats me) so they are not going to elect to download Safari.

That's really ridiculous if Paypal were to block Safari due to one security exploit against the thousands of holes in Internet Explorer.
I have to wonder if some of you on this forum hate Apple so much you just want them to fail.

Uh, M$ did this exact same thing. Precisely the same thing, even the same kind of software. Forcing IE7 on us as an "update" instead of an optional new version.

Oh come on. IE7 was an upgrade. IE7 was installed over version 6. This issue is COMPLETELY different since Apple is automatically installing software that has NEVER EVER been installed before on a machine.

Besides, just because MS does it makes it okay? Hell HAS frozen over.

This would be like Adobe trying to install their new media player during a Flash plug-in update on your mac. It just isn't good practice.

It's obvious that people are very divided on this issue. It will have no impact on those this policy does not bother, yet those that it rubs the wrong way will be discouraged from using Apple products in the future. I'll continue to use iTunes on my Mac, but I'm looking for another media player for my XP machine after this move by Apple.

I have no desire to try Firefox on my Mac, but I certainly don't want Mozilla trying to install the program regardless of what I want.

Please realize what you are saying because you sound a lot like a MS employee. "The end user doesn't know what's good for him, so I shall decide for him."

How many of those people that had Safari installed without them realizing it do you think will actually use Safari? I'll bet a very very small percentage.

It's a good thing that Microsoft doesn't support Internet Explorer on Mac anymore. XD

Nor do they support WMP for Mac either. (I don't mind that they push Flip4Mac...I have that anyway....let them push the full version =))

So what would they exactly push? =P I guess Microsoft Messenger, but Office already comes with it, and besides...Apple doesn't push iChat.
