Yeah... Everything on the list of Eddy Cue's responsibilities that was good from the start (mainly iTunes, the App Store, iBooks, and Apple's productivity/creativity apps, in my opinion) came out when Jobs was still alive, which I suspect is because Jobs would have no hesitation in yelling at him when he screwed up. Cook has done a very good job of out-operating the competition (as Forbes reported:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/ewanspence/2015/01/31/how-apple-beat-android/ ), and despite these reports of "supply constraints" seems to be very good at driving up demand for Apple hardware, but I think these screw-ups are the real signs of what Apple lost when Jobs died. There's still a bunch of very talented people at Apple, and make no mistake, Apple botched several things under Jobs (MobileMe, the G4 Cube), but I feel like Jobs was much better at quality control than anyone who's currently there. People love to talk about how much of a jerk he was, but when you're running the most profitable company in the world, sometimes you have to be! He'd call people out on there s***, and that's how things get fixed.
I think a lot of the problems with Apple software, in terms of the OS's, at least, are overblown. I had no major issues at launch with Mac OS 10.7-10.10 or iOS 5-8 that I couldn't live with and that weren't quickly resolved. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is my phone having rotation issues in iOS 8 on my 6 Plus until 8.0.2 came out, which just meant I left orientation lock on.
But I have to say, based on my EXTREMELY buggy experience with Apple Music, that their services are simply subpar as of late, at least until two-three updates later. Apple Maps usually works for me, but not consistently; Photo Stream is complete and total garbage, which I've had to experience over and over again working at Simply Mac (an Apple retailer and service provider) because people don't back up their devices and then when they get their phone replaced, Photo Stream pulls back about 5 photos; iCloud Photo Library is better, but keeps duplicating people's photos and wipes everything in your Photo Stream off your phone half the time when you activate it for no reason; syncing content through iCloud typically works, but it's still strangely difficult to get contacts and calendars from other services merged into iCloud; and I'll never understand why streaming a movie through iTunes works about half the time while streaming a movie through Netflix works flawlessly, assuming your internet is working.
Some of this is definitely very whiny. Sure, I can just use Spotify or Netflix and such instead, or sync my contacts through Google or something. But I think it's important to give Apple credit where it's due and call them out when they suck at something rather than mindlessly follow them. Eddy Cue either needs to be booted, Forstall-style, or Cook needs to figure out how to make him do his job right. I know that it's a lot to get right and they have millions of customers to please, but, well, that's part of the job description.
