iPod micro
I normally prefer to lurk, but I feel the need to say something here only because I think many here may be missing the obvious.
I think that a video capable iPod will show up eventually, but I don't think the time is right for it now. Why? Because it would likely be a $499+ item. Remember how Apple got bit by the original iPod photo? They didn't sell too well. I think Apple is preparing for a big holiday season and a $499 iPod has already proven to be a slow seller. Maybe the video iPod will hit at Macworld SF, but I don't think it will hit before then. No, Apple wants a BIG holiday season and $499+ is just too expensive.
The iTunes phone from Motorola will likely be introduced, but will it be the star of the show. I say no. We've all known it was coming for far too long now. It would hardly be earth shattering news, right?
But think about everything that has happened lately. First, there is the deal with Samsung for flash chips. Then there is the fact that the iPod minis are in short supply these days. Also keep in mind the the iPod minis are still technically "First Generation." Then, there is the invitation. The text reads "1000 songs in your pocket changed everything. Here we go again." The invitation was accompanied by a photo of a pair of jeans. Specifically, the photo focused on the right front pocket, and as I hear it, it particularly focused on the smaller, inner change pocket. Now, we have the Wall Street Journal reporting the the products introduced will be the iTunes phone and iPod minis. Now it's all beginning to make sense. The iPod minis are due for the "Second Generation" treatment, and at $199 it could sell like crazy between now and Christmas.
So, it sounds like rather than simply replace the hard drive in the minis with flash memory, Apple will redesign the whole thing in a much smaller form factor. So the new tag line will be "1000 songs in your CHANGE pocket." That would explain the invitation pretty well, wouldn't it? They could even keep the 6GB minis, drop the 4GB minis, and replace them with this new line of flash based iPods. Smells like iPod micro to me!
