This pretty much confirms that that it will be the iTunes phone.

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1255

Motorola will have an after-party on Spetember 7th (same day as the Apple announcement) to celebrate the device "formerly known as the cell phone". They will be having a night of "fun, music and evolution".

I think its got to be something more than the iTunes phone, the phone has already been announced by Motorola and its not Jobs style to hold a big event like this for something that will have already been out there for a week and a half. Also, according to Motorola insiders the iTunes phone is capped out at 25 songs even if you update the memory chip from the included 128mb chip

And why would you use the 1000 songs slogan to create publicity for a device that is going to hold 25 songs. With the recent deal to buy a ton of flash memory from Samsung it could be a new iPod shuffle, possibly with a screen.

I agree. A phone doesn't blow your mind. At least not mine. I'm gonna change my earlier thought regarding the iPod Pro, and go with a Mac Mini type of device that takes the place of a DVD/VHS player for your HDTV allowing us to connect to downloadable content from Disney, ABC, ESPN, Pixar and whoever else Steve has made agreements with. Encoded with h.264 and most likely at 720p since that is what ABC broadcasts it's HD programs at.

That would blow my mind

I just don't think that if Apple lets Motorola talk about the phone in the invitation that it will only be the iTunes Phone that is announced, and instead will only be one element of the presentation.

From what I've seen the Motorola event is a stand alone.... amd with that in mind I think there's an 80% chance of the Apple even being a new iPod event, with the iTunes phone being a minor footnote.... especially if that 25 songs cap is true. Which I can't believe as its suicide....

maybe apple will talk about the itunes app and then motorola talk aboujt the phone...

here is what I would like to see on an Ipod.
• ability to input data. Just like a PDA.
• ability to receive emails and send them.

On a more wishful think way:
• ability to use as a phone.

Video would be nice. but, I agree with some folks here, I would like to use a large screen to watch it. maybe ipod with Video Out would do the trick.

but...isnt the after show party of moto in new york, and the apple event in san francisco?
whats that? 2000 miles?

i think the itunes phone is clear, but way too obvios to be the only announcement.
and not big enough for being compared with the impact of the first ipod release.

I'm really hoping that they are hyping this like the first iPod annoucement because they are going to revolutionise mobile phones like they did the mp3 player. If they have managed to design a phone that is better than any other and if they have Cingular (Number 1 cell network in USA) and Motorola (Number 2 mobile phone manufacturer) then it would be as huge as the iPod.
I hope so, but im probaly dreaming as i hate the UI and design of mobile phones, and i would find just iTunes on a phone useless, whats the point when i carry my iPod with me at all times anyway.
Has anyone heard any rumors on wether the phone will be designed by Apple or Motorola.

Heh, did you see my post on AppleInsider then? Practically exactly the same words :p

San Francisco = NOT iPhone, guaranteed.

Agreed, Moto. Should Announce it on their own, since they made it.

I'm sure Steve will MENTION the Phone, but it won't be the main event.

They are not playing up on the fact of how many songs it holds. The 1000 songs in your pocket slogan refers to when the iPod was first introduced and how it changed digital music...they are eluding to the fact that this will change everything too.

This thread's gotten a little bloated.

But I think my first instinct is correct - we shall see the phone next week.

I'm still not convinced there'll be anything more than that.

Well, nothing super-significant.

Except maybe some jeans.

][ob :D

addition:
It's kinda obvious what has happened with this phone, looking at the big picture. The phone was nothing special when steve showed it off before, then they got it ready for launch and Steve probably went "what?! this is it?" and then the whole thing got pulled, they've been working on fitting 4GB or so in flash memory into the thing so it can be worthy of the iPod title, and THAT'S what's happened.

ARGHHHH

You have all guessed wrong!
What good is a video iPod? Its throwing range would be low, and could narily be used to disable a man. Iflicks? What good is iFlicks.
The true announcement is of a gold and Jewel encrusted Trident with attatched rocket launchers, which will be wielded by Steve Jobbs in a massive attack on the vary gates of Redmond. The dwarves of Cupertino have been hard at work forging this sacred weapon since before the age of Windowese of 95. It is the fortold product launch, which will be used to smite those Devils of DOS before thier evil spreads into the education market.
That, and he will announce that four random iPod's have silicone scrolls in them, which will allow the four lucky recipients to tour Cupertino's magic computer factory.

I think it won't be the iPhone for one simple reason: The iPhone is going to be offered only by Cingular. This means that everyone who's currently with Sprint, Verizon, SunCom, T-Mobile, and every other cell provider in the country will have a choice: Stick with your current carrier, or suck up an early termination fee to switch to Cingular and get a cool phone. For this reason, the potential market for the iPhone is MUCH smaller than the market for ANY type of iPod-like device.

Definitely not the iPhone. My guess would be Video iPod.

There are a lot of clues to a video iPod:

  • rumors of Apple making deals with music companies for music videos
  • saying in their invitation that it's the biggest thing since the first iPod, which I don't think a phone that already was announced is
  • the ending of Apple's music podcast saying something huge is coming next week
  • the music video section of the iTMS hasn't been updated in weeks

using that criterion

Ummmm....

The Apple home page hasn't been updated in weeks - it still has that ground-breaking picture of a two-button mouse....

Clearly, this signals that next Wednesday will see THE DUAL-CORE POWERBOOK G5

"definitely" not the iPhone? Wrong, why would moto hold an event in new york the same day...it's gonna a be the iPhone, maybe some other smaller updates. I doubt they would present the iPhone AND a vPod the same day.

Well, the iPhone is not an Apple product, for starters. And it's entirely possible that Apple and Motorola are coordinating the launch of two separate, yet related, products in order to more fully dominate the news cycle: vPod from Apple, iPhone from Motorola.

If you haven't noticed, the music video page was updated once a week, just like the rest of the music store; 3 weeks ago was the last update, however. The Apple page not updating until a new product is usual, but music videos not updating is completely different.

And isn't it convenient that the page that stopped being updated was music videos, which coincides with the rumors of Apple selling them.

Bring on the iPhone and the vPod. Credit Card, Please Stand By.

Apple is hosting an event in the UK on the same day apparently.

As a UK resident I say: Cingular? Who're they?

iPhone is Motorola's baby, with advice from Apple. It is theirs to release - 10am eastern. Two hours later, 10am pacific (that's what you call it right?) the focus suddenly changes. Presentation is also shown at Motorola's event in New York (why not, I bet the iPhone will also support video, albeit not many on a 256MB Micro-SD card unless Apple bitched at Motorola and got them to integrate 1GB of flash memory (30 music videos at DVD resolution? But you don't need DVD resolution on a phone - you need 1/4 the resolution. That means over 100 music videos on a mobile phone with 1GB of built-in flash memory). iPhone support for video will be announced by Apple, because Motorola can't pre-announce it!

(I don't know the time for Motorola's announcement. Maybe it will happen after the Apple event, i.e., at midday pacific, or 2pm eastern)

Then there will be a 1200 post thread here on the vPod thread, and 400 on the iPhone thread.
