why?
whats so strange about watching some music clips or simpsons/futurama when you´re sitting in train or plane.
or taking your movies to your friends, plug the ipod in the tv and watch them on the big screen (cause i´m sure that would be possible too, as it is already with the color/photo ipods)

it´s not that you HAVE to, you just can if you want to.
and (like somebody said before): if you just want to listen to music like with the previos ipod generations, just do that. and be happy about the extra battery life.

Exactly. It would be a meager, added feature. Nothing announcement worthy. A portable DVD player would be a much better video experience, even on the smallest of screens (if that's what you're into). Video on a tiny screen is something that a small segment of young males would get into, but that's about it (same with "taking movies to a friend's house"). Nerdilicious good fun, but that's about it.

Well if 1000 songs IN your pocket changed everything, imagnie what life is going to be like when are 1000 songs ARE your pocket; obviously Apple is launching a pair of jeans with a 4gb hard drive (or flash card) built in, in order to give you 1000 songs everywhere your Jeans go!
Thats why they say "1000 songs IN your pocket" - theyre not emphasising the number but the fact you used to have to carry somethign In your pocket...

Does anyone know if The Gap sells iPod Shuffles? I'd be surprised if they didn't considering their current iTunes promotion and the fact that Steve Jobs was on their board of directors...

Might be a good idea...store co-branded iPod Shuffles... That would be pretty good advertising considering how many people wear the Shuffles around their necks...

I can say for certain.... how, I can't say, but the iTunes rokr phone will definately be announced next week. The TV ads may hit the streets next week as well. Eric

Man, I don't want the ROKR. I want a RAZR that's iTunes compatible and has more than the puny 5 megs of memory on it, plus a flash memory card slot. Why can't Motorola ship a useful phone?

Problem with a Portable DVD player is that I can't play music off of it, it doesn't fit in my pocket, and I can only put one movie in at a time meaning I would have to carry a book with all my DVDs in it. That being said, I guess Verizon, V-Cast and their video phones are way off base with what consumers may not know they want. Video is already in cell phones here in the US. That aside, who says a long-awaited video iPod is going to have the same screen size as current iPods. I think a full-faced screen on the iPod would be more than adequate for viewing video, not to mention it's close to a 16:9 aspect ratio. I think you underestimate the hidden demand for this product.

hey thats nice :D
if it´s not fake, it sounds good for an ipod av :)
thats why i like this forum so much :D

@jayscheuerle:
just remember the photo-feature, a year ago. imho even more "unspectacular" or "unneeded" as a video ability.
but there was a very big event last year.

Well, I think nobody can really say as a fact what will come next week. We'll just have to wait and see.

By the way, a music video lasts an average of 3 minutes. 30 videos x 3 mins = 90 mins. Typically a 4GB DVD holds from 90 to 120 mins of "DVD-quality" video. So one fourth the size would mean those 30 videos on 1GB. Where do the other 70 fit in? I know you are only being speculative, but the numbers are wrong.

You forgot that DVDs use MPEG 2, whilst these devices will be using MPEG 4 / H.264.

DVD quality H.264 is 1MBit/s of data, as I explained in this thread already, and on AppleInsider as well. A 4 minute music video is 240 seconds, or 30MB of data. So you can easily fit 1000 music videos in 30GB. If you have Quarter DVD resolution then you can fit 1000 music videos in 8GB, or 100 in 800MB.

If they are 3 minutes long then you'll be able to fit 150 music videos in 1GB of storage.

What about all the patent garbage thats been flying around.

Heres what I want to know. Whats going to happen to the ipod in relation to the fact that the Creative just got their Zen Patent? Also what about the fact that some M$ employee also got a patent that could spell dark skies for Apple and the iPod.

How come you guys did not post that forum? I mean I hate patents myself, and I wish Creative would just crawl under a rock along side with m$ but the truth is that these two companies make it seem like as if Apple does not even own the ipod!

IS that why Apple is making a move towards the cellphone so that they could avoid all this? Would A different platform would mean patents would not affect them anymore?

WHATS GONNA HAPPEN?

I wouldn't worry about any patent issues. Silicon Valley is like a cold war. Everybody has patents that overlap with everyone else's. Nobody is going to sue anybody else over patent infringement because if they do, odds are, the recipient of the suit can counter-sue for a different patent infringement and so on. Patents in the tech world are merely to keep in a company's back pocket in case they need to use it against someone who is suing them. There is just so much overlap in the technology world involving patents. Not to mention the Creative patent is so broad I doubt it can stand up on its own, in addition to the fact that Creative is just trying to grab some attention by flailing their arms in the air like crazy people.

I find it ironic that Apple issues a private invitation to the press and gets worldwide media attention and the only way Creative can get a fraction of that attention is shipping 4000 of their crappy MP3 players with worms on them.

Definitely a good point. Did you also notice that on September 8 (the day after the event) at the same retail location, the following workshops will be held under the title "digital movies":

iMovie HD workshop
iDVD workshop
Final Cut Express HD workshop
iPod and iTunes workshop
Final Cut Pro HD workshop
Motion workshop
DVD studio pro workshop

I would consider this an interesting combination

Doesn't necessarily mean much, as they have these workshops pretty much every day.

but we really have some indications now.
and i think the more the wednesday comes closer, the possibilities are increasing that some information leaks through.

i think we´ll find out some more things here in this forum in the next days, as many users here already found some nice indications.

Wait a minute, we've got one more connection. MacRumors is in on it! The mods supposedly have a podcast in the works, and they plan on being the first video podcast! I knew something was going on here! Conspiracy!!!

On a more subtle note, it makes perfect sense except for the possible bandwidth issues. BitTorrent Video Podcasting, anyone?

On another note, video blogging is mentioned on Apple's website in these two places too.

From the second link:

Videoblogging is a new form of expression centering around posting videos to a website and encouraging an audience response. It is the next step from text blogging and podcasting. A community of artists, video editors, podcasters, bloggers, and software developers has formed around this new mode of communication. Join videobloggers as they show their favorite videos and viewing tools, discuss video blog creation, and share tips and techniques. Learn how you can create your own video blog for free!

Note: that second link is from the week of July 24-30.

Ya, sorry about that. I figured that out after I had already posted. I still think a video ipod is on it's way though.

Has anyone thought that maybe Apple will be releasing a video ipod that not only playsback video, but records it as well?

I'd say an iPod that has a high quality video/still camera in it would be pretty interesting.

Apple wouldn't do it, and frankly I wouldn't want them to do it. We're moving to HD now, and how would you suppose they fit a video camera into an iPod? Interesting? Sure. Not gonna happen though.

Some words from the FUTURE!

Folks,

As some of you may be aware, Apple is hosting a big media event on September 7. It is billed by Apple as being at least as big as the original iPod introduction.

Well, I have travelled back in time to tell you how it's going to shake down. And it is definitely big. Unfortunately, I don't remember it verbatim, but I will give you the broad strokes.

(I did this for some friends of mine before Apple announced the move to Intel too, for kicks, and they seemed to appreciate the favour after it turned out to be 100% correct (including the legacy emulator, and the introduction of fat binaries along with the XCode version that makes them). So I thought I would do the same for all of you fine folks.)

(Apple Lawyers please note: I have not signed any sort of Apple NDA. Furthermore, no NDA was violated by the person who provided me with this information; namely, Steve Jobs himself, during his keynote--which hasn't happened yet.)

First, after blahblahblahing about Apple's successes (how many songs they've sold on iTunes, the coolness of podcasting, etc.), Jobs introduces iTunes 5.0, with video blogging and podcasting. When an update comes out, iTunes automatically downloads the podcast. Steve demos subscribing to and downloading a video podcast using iTunes software.

He then goes on to announce that iTMS is now "iPod Media Store" (or something similar; can't remember what the exact name was), and will now sell, starting immediately, music videos and full-length movies. Had to seal some major deals for this one.

Next, Steve reveals that he has been talking with some more important people and that some TV shows will start podcasting via the store. Pay for the season, and get a podcasted update every time a new episode comes out. For seasons that are already over, you can alternately buy and download the whole thing, or individual episodes. This whips Tivo, and whips it good.

Then, he starts talking about iPods. Here come the iPod upgrades. Nothing amazing to report here. Except...

Steve: "But what if you want to take your movies with you?" The answer: the new video iPod. Thanks to the H.264 codec, you can store several HD DVD quality movies (or hundreds of TV show episodes) on the iPod. Also, the new processor that they use supports H.264 encoding in hardware, so you can play the HD DVD quality movies either on the colour iPod screen or the TV.

Then he goes on to say: "Now you can watch your downloaded movies by hooking the computer up to the TV in the living room. Or even better: beam it." Introducing Airport Express with video streaming, and a video connection for your TV. This allows you to beam movies straight to your TV from your powerbook. He demos a movie being streamed to the screen from a Mac.

Steve: "But there is still a problem: any time you want to change what's you're watching on the TV, you still have to go over to the computer to do it. So we decided to allow you to control what you are watching right from your sofa." Here he changes the movie playing on the screen demos using an iPod -- that isn't plugged in. Introducing Bluetooth support in the iPod, allowing remote control of a computer. "The iPod is the new remote control."

Steve: "While we were at it, we decided to build Airport into the iPod too." He demonstrates buying a video from the store on his iPod, wirelessly. Video is downloaded directly to the iPod. iPod then beams the video directly to the big TV screen, connected to the Airport Express. "So you can actually use any available wireless internet connection to buy a video, anywhere, on the spot." Uproarious applause. "Suppose you're at your friend's house. You can buy a movie, download it, and if the TV is hooked up to Airport Express, even watch it, right there on your friend's TV, without leaving the sofa. No strings or wires attached." Crowd goes nuts.

Steve: "And your Mac will automatically detect when there is new media on the iPod, even wirelessly, so you can have the Mac get the video off of the iPod onto the Mac, where it can be used as the master copy to burn your own DVDs." More hoopla.

Steve: "One more thing..." Ed Zander appears and introduces the iPhone. Looks sort of like a phone version of an iPod -- very Apple. Uses the Cingular network in the US and O2 network in the UK. Has Bluetooth, allowing "remote control" capabilities like the iPod. Also has Airport, to allow calls over a wireless hotspot, and buy music and videos from anywhere, right on the phone.

As you can see, the keynote's a doozy. I might have mixed up some of the details (I'm going by memory), but you get the idea.

Very good point. I think its safe to say iTunes 5 will have BitTorrent, and we may see it in Leopard for Safari! Otherwise, there's no way this is happening.
