Word to the wise: when I stopped using Apple Music last year it totally annihilated my iTunes library. Eventually I managed to repair everything and get it back in order, but I won't be making that mistake again. I'll just stick to buying stuff I like. Not saying everyone else will suffer the same pain but I recommend a pause for thought before trying any free Apple Music trials.

Because of the indefinite delay of Spotify Hi-Fi?
Because Apple increasingly needs to squeeze every penny out to maintain profit growth. Those two extra months of the free trail means Apple still has to pay streaming royalties for anything trial users listen to during that time.

With increasing pressure and attention from Spotify, and quickly rising inflation, and the inevitable economic whiplash of everyone sitting at home picking their noses for two years, Apple needs to tighten its belt and lower overall product value to keep the quarterly earnings looking as good as possible. Expect much marketing from Tim Cook about how this is all "super great" for you to spend a lot more for a lot less.

This already started a few years before, under the guise of environmentalism... no adapters... no headphones... no customer perks for that increased premium Apple price tag... begun the Great Cheapening has!

For everybody here considering leaving Spotify for Neil Young’s “cause”, I would encourage you to look into it deeper, as Neil Young might have just been bought off by Amazon, actively promoting it to his fans. Amazon, of all services! He is not mentioning Tidal and Apple Music, both of which have HiFi options. This whole story is fishy, IMO:

It took me less than a month to realize what a disappointment the Music service is, especially in terms of software - although I appreciate that Apple is the only one keeping podcasts and music separate. For those who are super accustomed to Spotify, Music won't feel right. If you're leaving Spotify because you can no longer stand giving that company your money, try Deezer before Music.

Millions of songs ... that I probably hate and will never listen to. In general I do not like paying for things that I do not use.

fair enough. 3 months is generous. i'm sure i got 6 months but might've been cause i got an iphone or ipad.

Makes sense. If you can't make a decision if Apple Music (or any other Apple service) is right for you within 30 days, it's time to seek professional help.
Lol, not everyone has time to investigate how much they like Apple's services over the course of a month, and if they do like it, there's nothing wrong with saving a little cash along the way.

1 month for a free trial is good enough. 3 months was generous. ?
Agreed. 1 month is plenty of time to make an assessment. I knew in 1 day that Apple Music was worth the price and that Apple Arcade and Apple TV+ were not. But throw the last 2 in with 200GB of iCloud for $5 more… well, that sealed the deal for me.

I just wish Apple would stop turning Apple Music back on in the music app with every reboot. Renting music is not my thing, and having to disable the useless Listen Now tab in the music app every time is annoying. Pestering me like that won’t make me try the service.

I think this is another symptom of overall increasingly annoying nag policy at Apple.

Its also obnoxious for software updates, and very obnoxious for businesses that need a stable machine to fulfill a specific critical purpose, rather than be up to date with the latest new feature or emoji.

On iOS the OS update behavior is downright deceptive as the random pop-ups only present two button options, upgrade or later (which just installs the update overinight). The only way to not upgrade is to swipe up, which is a hidden "feature", and not obvious to those who don't know or don't accidentally find it.

Can Cupertino, just for an experiment, try not pulling this shady stuff for a while? Is that really such a tall order? It's reeking of pathetic desperation, and makes no sense considering their sales.

Oh no worries, listen now can't even be disabled in the latest version lol

Install Shazam app, open it, tap on its little gear settings icon in the top-left corner, then click on the big red “Try” button just next to Apple Music. Depending on your previous trial history they might offer you 1, 2 or 3 months, this tends to change, but one month free is a given.

For me the most useful feature of any good music streaming platform is being able to discover new songs based on the songs I like. How do you find new music otherwise?

You can turn it off in system’s Settings > Music > Apple Music > Display Apple Music toggle. If you turn it off there, your Music app will only have three icons left at the bottom - Library, Radio and Search.
