Remember when Steve Jobs said it was stupid to rent music? MysticCow remembers...but times also change.
That was also back when music rentals had to be loaded from your computer to your music player and when DRM made everything more complex. These days with cellular data streaming directly from your device it's functionally the same as having music file as long as the subscription is active.

For $10/month, I get a sports/entertainment package from my cable provider.
The only channel I watch is Turner Classic Movies.
That is worth paying for, but no music service is worth my money.
If Apple Music had an ad based version, I’m in.
Turner Classic Movies is commercial free, except for all the self promos they run between movies.
I purchased Apple TV and have ignored the free trials.
They assume I will keep and pay for all those extras.
They aren’t worth it to me.

That was in 2003… when an alternative to piracy needed to be found quickly, and music streaming and instant downloads was basically impossible for 90% of customers.
Sure, there were a couple music renting sites that existed then, but you couldn’t put their proprietary files on your iPod, they were stuck on your computer. And also they expired.
His whole point with saying that music streaming wasn’t going to work was that people want to listen to their music over and over, not just rent it. With music streaming services, as long as you pay you can stream, download, whatever to a song as many times as you want

You can turn it off in system’s Settings > Music > Apple Music > Display Apple Music toggle. If you turn it off there, your Music app will only have three icons left at the bottom - Library, Radio and Search.
They removed that possibility sadly.

For me the most useful feature of any good music streaming platform is being able to discover new songs based on the songs I like. How do you find new music otherwise?
iTunes recommendations mostly; plus random browsing, listening to internet radio, and discussions about music with friends. Besides most people lock in their musical preferences in their late teens and 20's and then don't want to discover new music after that, listening to the same set of songs over and over again. ?

Lol, not everyone has time to investigate how much they like Apple's services over the course of a month, and if they do like it, there's nothing wrong with saving a little cash along the way.

Those people should simply buy an extra month or two of Apple Music until they can find the time to muster up such a weighty decision.

However, sadly, that's the way it is today. The new normal for those feeling entitled is expecting free stuff. Thus my recommendation for seeking professional help in my previous post.

I got nearly 1 year trial and all the electro , house, mix suck there!
The only thing that make me happy to have it is to be able to listen some time some classics like the Zep, Pink Floyd, Metallica, nirvana, etc..
But last time that erased all my play list!

And last word I have the same with YouTube without out ads and fee!

Incredible BS from Apple to disable “getting rid of AM “ on the sidebar

I can’t believe people keep defending this company.

They just keep pushing and pushing to see what they can get away with..
..and sycophants keep defending them the whole way.

It’s such a cult now
And you can bet the pressure inside Apple to start further monetizing user data is growing, and the company has been getting stingier and stingier, “surprise and delight” the customer is now “squeeze and rationalize”.

The temptation to sell out for a strong willed person of good character must be significant, unfortunately Tim Cook is neither.

But hey, maybe he’ll have a few more Uyghurs squeezed to keep up the profits, before liquidating user data completely?

Have you voted with your wallet yet, supporting a superior tech company with your currency that's in alignment with your views?

12 months @ $10 ($120) - 3 months trial (-$30) = $90/year

12 months @ $10 ($120) - 1 month trial (-$10) = $110/year

You’re out of line with the “entitled” nonsense. Apple Music costs more now to new subscribers, so the only thing that’s changed is with Apple offering less value for the same service.

I get it. You want free stuff. Simply vote with your wallet for a better value. Maybe you can find a streaming music service that offers a free six month trial.

I do it all the time

(by not buying much -- been years on a direct from Apple hardware purchase actually -- AirPods 1 was last thing I think -- same year as my first OGSE)

Doesn't really help with the Music app issues (of forcing AM to always be on the sidebar now)

Remember when Steve Jobs said it was stupid to rent music? MysticCow remembers...but times also change.
And Steve Jobs wasn't entirely wrong. Spotify wasn't profitable for the longest time, and is only getting there because of their pivot to podcasting, which would explain why Apple hesitated entering this market until they realised that this was where the industry was headed - because the money simply wasn't there.

There are benefits to having the world's entire music catalogue available to every customer on-demand. Playlists wouldn't work otherwise (and Apple just released a whooping 250 of them), but I also suspect that given the economics, music streaming may eventually become a loss leader that is only being propped up by tech giants as a ecosystem hook.

Apple didn’t start the subscription-based music streaming game. They were kind of dragged into it, because the other choice was to remain purchase-only and watch that market erode.

The idiots at the music labels who agreed to license music this way (and at these rates) did a huge disservice to the artists.

Spotify all the way with me.
They are the only ones who allow their users to use both playlists AND folders to organize their music.
Love using the folders because it works exactly like the Windows Explorer or Macintosh Finder.
You can for example start by have genres (classical, jazz, pop, rock, workout, dinner, movies etc) and then sub-folders from there and even sub-sub-folders if you want.
In my case for example I have a Classical folder with composers inside it and then the works.
So the Classical>Mozart would have sub-folders of Symphonies, String Quartets, Piano Trios, Concertos etc.
LOVE it!!!!
Totally awesome and best way for me to keep my music organized.

For streaming TV/movies I can see an extended trial makes sense. But music? Took me 1 hr to say no to Spotify trial for music. For podcasts I just use SPotify free version. Same thing when I tried Tidal. Took me all of 5-10 min and I was like nope. Itunes for me. The interface and ease of use in the car and audio quality pretty easy to gauge pretty quickly.
