At this point, Tesla’s dead to me as I’ll not put a dime more in Musk’s pocket.

If in the market now, I’d be buying a Mach E or just waiting to see what Ford & Lincoln are going to come up with in their EV product offensive over the next year or so.

Clearly you don’t own a Tesla. There’s no App Store, and you don’t have to pay a penny for maps, ever. You can also stream your current Apple Music app via BT to Tesla, complete with artwork. This latest update is just giving you a native app. It’s possible you can hotspot your phone to use it (like you can with every other app available) but that’s not clear as of yet.

Also, Tesla’s UI is light years ahead of CarPlay. The iPhone is built for Apple’s software in the same way the software in a Tesla is tailor made for it. That’s why pretty much every implementation of CarPlay is tacked on and not purpose built. We’ll see when the holistic approach to CarPlay actually hits vehicles with full integration. Until then, Tesla UI is miles better than CarPlay.

I was anti any car without CarPlay until I got my Tesla about 8 days ago. The only reason I went with Tesla, nothing else is really appealing in the market. I was so concerned about CarPlay. I am pleased to say the implementation of Tesla OS or whatever is called is spot on. The only thing I miss is Waze, unless there is dire traffic I wont miss it. For this I bought a phone holder.

Really impressed with what Tesla have done, can't believe I am find without CarPlay. Plus I prefer it, I am not always responding to messages. Nice disconnect time.

Update not available for me yet on my model Y in the UK
I think if you go to the settings page on the car and find Software Update, if connected to Wi-Fi it will do a check. My next check is due around 7pm today. Anxiously waiting. I hope it comes with Lossless support

Build quality and reliability, of course it's been documented over and over so I'll give it to you, but for the rest, any Tesla is an overall no-match for any other car maker.

If they were behind in "most aspects", they wouldn't be so desirable.
Perhaps still for US built cars, but the china built ones (and I understand also the German built ones) are decent build quality.

I do own a Tesla, and rate CarPlay far higher both in usability and in functionality.

Waze would definitely be nice, but Tesla live traffic works well, yes. Glad you’re enjoying. I was very much the same as you!

Well. We can agree to disagree. I’ll be enjoying Steam in my car tomorrow, too. 😎

I've owned my 2018 Model 3 AWD for almost 4 years, and 9 times out of 10 trying to connect to my iPhone 12 Pro Max's hotspot fails - when the phone is sitting right there in the car with me. I have no idea why this is the case. It got to the point where I gave up trying. 🤷‍♂️

As for Premium Connectivity, I'm pretty sure the connectivity is still 4G LTE, not 5G. So using my phone's 5G hotspot would be a win if it actually worked, modulo the lack of real-time traffic data.

Having seen my friends' cars with CarPlay, personally speaking I'd rather have that than Tesla's rudimentary offering. Waze is far better than Tesla's maps with traffic routing, IMHO.

I have no need for Apple Music because I don't subscribe to it.

I agree about fit and finish especially paint. It can definitely can be improved, but Tesla is similar to Apple products - people look their cars over with a microscope.

I’ve had no major reliability issues on 3 Tesla’s since 2018. When I do have a minor problem I schedule an appointment in the Tesla app. Mobile service comes to my home, calls me 15 minutes before, and has always been top notch.

This is amazing service and I never have to deal with or drive to a dealer again.

I own a refresh Model S and wish it had CarPlay. Tesla media UI is not light years ahead of CarPlay, as I think it is behind. Way behind BMW current iDrive systems too for media UI or just plain simplicity to use. With Tesla, the album art is tiny, there is no way to save real favorites/presets or arrange them in the order you like. Tesla has recents, but that is worthless as it seems to keep recents from long ago. Everytime you want to do something in the media UI, you have to look at the center screen, which takes your eyes off the road. Model S has SiriusXM too, but for some reason your favorites never save as favorites to see all the time.

You are limited to what you can use with their media UI. With CarPlay, I can choose Waze, Apple Maps, Google, and countless other apps and it is consistent from car to car.

There is a dedicated thread in the Tesla forum website where people try to get CarPlay on the Tesla’s using, so not just me that thinks that.

Also, on the Model S the drivers console infotainment system has not been updated once in the 18 months that the refresh came out and is barebones. No media controls/album art where you can see them when driving, no blindspot video, etc. All of these things make it safer when driving and also more enjoyable by not searching for stuff.

I love my Tesla, but their UI is not way ahead of CarPlay or even BMW iDrive at least for media controls/safety. Despite all the complaints on the above from not just me, Tesla has not done one thing to correct them or improve them. Can’t be that hard, as they always seem to add some new game or some other strange thing. 🙂

I did a check 7pm yesterday, its not checking again today since then. I assume its one check every 24 hours? My evening will be ruined if it doesn't show at 7pm 😂

Me too hoping for Lossless, I'm using Tidal currently but the UI is terrible for Tidal and all my music is on Apple Music. I've tried the transfer music tool, it was not great.

They fixed this, this was my concern. The new models for UK market are coming out of China and they are spot on. Well, my PPF near the wheel arch is not on properly, apart from this its perfect. Its booked in with Tesla to resolve.

That is funny when you can’t wait for an update with a feature you want and you keep checking. Then it suddenly appears when you least expect it! 🤣

Excited for Apple Music, hope the UI is good for it and the quality is as good or better than Tidal HiFI.

Edit: This post made it super easy to spot the Tesla fan boys on this site. You guys are hilarious. 👎 all you want, ignore those rattles... you know they are there and well documented all across the internet.

I hope I don’t jinx myself, but my Model Y is an early build (Aug 2020) and I don’t have any significant rattles. It rattles less than my previous car which was more expensive and from a more premium brand.

Carplay in its current iteration is not that groundbreaking... It's just your iphone interface blown up on the car's display with limited apps.... I would understand this claim if Carplay had other functionality that controlled the car like climate control, locks, windows, etc.... But it doesn't do any of that so I don't see what the huge deal is as people make it out to be..... The next iteration of carplay that Apple demoed looks a lot more promising because it actually integrates with the car and shows real time driving data, and lets you control things. but as it stands currently the Tesla interface is far superior and if I have to stream a podcast or do something silly like that I can just bluetooth to my phone.
Sorry, the Tesla interface is superior to nothing. The maps are horrible. Interfacing with the maps is horrible. Anything outside of the maps is just a menu, and when you memorize where everything is stuck they release an update that shuffles them around into different menus. I can't stand it. (The Tesla belongs to my wife, I would have picked any other EV if I was in the market for a new car.)

Can confirmed. Drove one for a week. Not mine thank goodness.

My budget French turd is better put together.

Also I had Apple Music on it for at least 5 years already 🤣

Edit: offended 4 Tesla owners so far :)

Didn’t offend me. I will say my previous car was a Range Rover Velar and it rattled more than my Tesla, and the turbo died after 6 months and had to be replaced. I exclusively bought European cars prior to this and I became very used to having loaner vehicles while they were in the shop. My friends Volvo S60 is in the shop literally once a month continuing the trend. And these were all brand new vehicles. My Tesla has had zero issues in 2.5 years, and zero maintenance costs…so I’m pretty content. I still think I’ll be enamored by the Macan EV when it comes out though, and likely switch back.

teslawaze.azurewebsites.net via the in car browser. It’ll work if you really need Waze in a pinch. You’re welcome. 😉

I guess everyone has their preferences. But I find it hard to believe that anyone would prefer the interface of some other EVs out there. I mean some of the ones I have seen are so un-intuitive, archaic and just messy.... Tesla is by far the most superior imo... It's not perfect like everything else, but its soooo much better than anything else in the car industry. But to each their own I guess.
