Remember the fix for the pre-Mac Apples . . . .

The chips weren't fully seated into the motherboard sockets. Rather than a recall. the fix was to elevate the computer case about 12 inches above the floor and drop it. Drop it!

It drove the chips into the sockets and fixed the problem.

Now, take you new iPhone and hold it about a foot off the floor and . . . .

Maybe that's how the fix will go down.

Exactly. It is absurd how some people seem to think that their iPhone is somehow unique, or special, or custom made as to not have an external antenna. They all have it.

They may all have it, but that doesn't mean it affects everybody equally. A lot of users are saying they have to work at it to get it to fail.

When do we begin the protest at the apple stores. I know some say return the phones, but what of the hundreds we have invested in apps we cannot use in OS X, or transfer/sell our licensees to.

We need to bring as much bad press on apple as possible for them to fix the issue or refund our money spent on apps we cannot use.

If apple screws us tomorrow, that day will be rembered as the day Android won.

Return it and get a 3GS?

I hate saying it, but this whole issue is quickly and surely spiraling down hill.

When will people put their egos behind them?

Don't know, but that question definitely belongs towards the MR crowd here.

For get any recall or any major change in design, for starters ANY change in antenna would require re certification in every country, thats not going to happen in 2 weeks,

the press conference will be,

SJ, we love the new phone, so do lots of our customers just read, then he will read an email, bla bla bla from some bloke who met his long lost sister because of the new 4's better revolutionary antenna design.

then they will kindly ask the press to stop posting nasty stuff about it as they are making this NON ISSUE an ISSUE whilst reminding them about there special relationship with Apple.

Steve will then say hay if your not satisfied with it in the first 60 days just return it for a refund, its simple.

thats will be it, No Recall , No Free Bumper and No Change.

Live with it or get something else, that is what you would do with ANY other device that did not meet your expectations so why different with this phone

Sure, as long as they also make the used app store or detail how we can get refunds on our apps.

If it's soooooo obvious then you fix it. Read what you type next time. Don't get mad! Suffer then

"Recalls" are for regulated products that are found to be dangerous in some way and the company legally needs to ensure that all costumers have a safe replacement. It severely taints a company and product brand.

This issue is about a gadget with an annoying bug that's generating enough bad PR (Consumer Reports, David Letterman jokes) that it threatens the perception of the iPhone 4 going forward. Apple simply wants all that to end. "Recall" equals "flawed" and "lemon" and unnecessarily makes things worse for Apple. That's why I bet they have a great consumer-focused solution tomorrow, like an optional exchange, but are meticulously squashing the characterization of a "recall," hence the leak to the WSJ tonight.

My guess is tomorrow's press conference goes something like this:

- The iPhone 4 is the most advanced tech and the most innovation ever included in a smartphone, including our groundbreaking antenna, which we believe improves reception over all previous iPhone models and other smartphones.

- Some consumers -- clearly too many -- have experienced signal drop off when holding the phone with a tight grip over the left side of the phone. That's an unusual way for people to hold a phone, but for too many of our customers, it's still a problem.

- We want everyone to love using the amazing technology in the iPhone 4 no matter how they hold it or use it.

- We have further insulated the phone (or whatever the solution is) with all models shipping going forward.

- Any current owner who would like to exchange their iphone for a new model (with the improved insulation) may do so within the next 90 days (or year or whatever they decide).

That approach ensures all future buyers are free of this problem, provides an excellent and flexible solution for current owners and Apple gets great press.

I agree with this. I think you have a brighter future as an analyst as the current financial analysts in these "news" reports.

Jesus, how can you miss the point so drastically?

The phone is not functional! Look, we love all of the features it has to offer, but it doesn't complete its primary purpose, that being a phone. No matter what you say, you shouldnt have to worry about how you hold your phone when you make a phone call; it's unheard of.

If we've established ourselves in the ecosystem, we need products we can use. We can try our best to ignore the defective signal, but in the end we need a phone that we can call people with, without worry.

And I'm pretty sure Free of Win's statement is there more for making a point...

My first thought on this is..does Jesus really answer posts like SJ answers e-mails?

Look....your definition of "functional" is in itself "flawed" The phone makes calls, loads and plays apps, internet, etc.... If you have to make an accommodation to perfectly use it in low signal areas, so be it. Does it have a weakness? Yes...It's not perfect---nothing is.

Be smart enough and grown up enough to deal with it or move on. Apple will do what's best for them....you do what's best for you. And you don't need to whine to everyone how you don't like the decision you made. Really.

Quoting a recent insurance commercial...."Let's head over to namby-pamby land and get some self-confidence for you!"

I hope it's money off at any apple store...so we can get any case we like rather than the apple bumper

BUT BUT case is not a fix for the problem. iPhones traditionally have high resale value. Every year I sell my iPhone to buy new one. If this issue is going to cause the re-value to drop, I am returning my iPhone now.

It's like having "recalled" brand new car but in this case there is no recall (assumption. Will come to know tomorrow). 99% certain Apple is not recalling the iPhone but cases do not fix this issue!!!!

Seems kind of irresponsible to spend "hundreds" on apps when your phone doesn't work.

For all the good he's done, it's time for Steve Jobs to step down. This is a really basic decision, and he failed his company, his customers and his investors. When form causes the basic function of the product to fail, it's time to rethink your design. Doesn't get much more simple than that.

That is the single most insane statement I've seen in months.

Ready for a completely off the wall prediction? They will be coating the new anteannae with a non-conductive coating. Old antennas will be taken out of users' phones, and sent to be retrofitted with the coating, therein, Apple saves tons of money on the replacement.

how's that off the wall?

Return it and get a 3GS?

How about making the phone just released usable in your left hand. I know it a little too much to ask, I'm just that way I guess.

I came into the Apple ecosystem for quality, not phones that cannot be used while holding it tight in my left hand.

If this what the solution is then I will return the phone and buy a new one!!

Let's do our own pro-active "re-send"!

Who told you to sell your old phone and/or buy a bunch of apps for a new phone before you knew it even worked?

That seems like it is a defect on the part of the user.

I didn't buy a bunch of apps before I knew P4 worked; I have a 3GS.

I don't get what your deal is... From what standpoint are you coming from?

As I've said before, you don't recall a non-dangerous product that the vast majority of buyers are very happy with. You let dissatisfied customers return/repair/exchange, but it has never made one ounce of sense that they would recall a safe product over an issue that many people don't experience.

This is one of the best posts I have seen on here in a long time. Finally somebody understanding true business/economic outlook. :apple:

lol why they recall it? they would loose thousands! they could care less about customer satisfaction when it comes to money.

This would be a very unwise decision on Apple's part. Do you honestly believe their sales would be unaffected by refusing to remedy a now very public problem with their flagship product? Imagine the headlines.

Let's cut to the chase shall we...

People on all sides have dug in their heels on this. People's egos are puffed up and emotional capital has been spent. So lets face it. No matter what Apple says or does tomorrow won't be good enough. Apple could recall the entire line, offer free replacements, free bumpers, free cases, refunds, you name it but the indignant crowd will reject it. They have to reject any solution because they have invested all their rage in the issue. Do you really think the ranting, foaming at the mouth, venom spewing, emotionally charged crowd will turn around and say, "Okay, that seems fair. That's okay. I can live with that." Not on your mother's grave they won't. Their reaction will make the Mel Gibson tapes look calm and rational. They can barely catch their breaths now between their spittle spraying tirades. I mean look at 'em in this very thread and tell me I'm wrong. Primordial rage trumps rational thinking every time.

Well at the moment this is Apple's "biggest worry". If people spend hundreds of pounds on an iPhone that isn't fit for purpose, they have every right to refuse it. Besides the fact that people have spent hundreds of pounds on DRM Music, apps and TV Shows, they are pretty much locked into the iPhone platform. That's why.

Other than the apps, you can use that DRM Music and TV shows on any Mac or PC via iTunes so your rant is flawed.
