Seems kind of irresponsible to spend "hundreds" on apps when your phone doesn't work.

What's irresponsible is not understand **** and yet continuing to post ignorantly.

We spent "hundreds" when we owned iterations of the iPhone that worked. We want to continue using these apps on up to date iterations of the iphone that function! What the **** don't you understand about it?

Silly thought?

Maybe this has been brought up before, but I haven't seen it mentioned: i wonder if the field tests that apple engineers did were done the same as the guy who's phone ended up at gizmo do. Eg: did all the iPhone 4 prototypes have a case around then to make it look like a 3GS? If a bumper case helps the problem, i imagine the 3GS disguise case really helped it!

/vjl/

what all you "experts" have missed

try this out ...
go get your shiny new iphone4, apply your best "death grip", watch the bars drop ... 4, 3, 2, 1 (yes i can get it to happen sometimes, not always, and never all the way down to "searching ...")
but don't let go, keep holding for a few minutes.
the bars come back after 1 or 2 min., i've able to reproduce this many times.
back up to 4 or 5 bars and still giving the "death grip"

there is obviously a software compensation that adjusts the way the phone handles changes in signal reception. thus the eventual software fix will work.

what probably happened is that the young, healthy California techs that tested the phone didn't take into consideration the fat, greasy, sweaty palms of all you geeks.

my prediction for tomorrow ... no recall, and just to piss you all off increase the price of bumpers to $50

oh yes and steve tells schumer to go ******* himself and keep his big nose out of private enterprises.

Friend, if the phone doesn't work for you. Vote with your wallet. Take the refund. Still want in the ecosystem? Get a shiny new 3GS and save a few bucks.

What if I still want in on the ecosystem while using present-day hardware?

I love your use of the asterisk. :)

So you spent hundreds on previous versions of the iPhone, big deal. Get a full refund, go back to your 3GS (or buy another) and pocket the leftover cash. No problem. I'm not understanding your apparent anger... Or perhaps your eloquence is far above me...

I hope you will forgive my "ignorant" posts.

Dear fanboys,
Apple is a large corporation like many others. They make thing. That make mistakes. The post of people that say "don't complain, just return it and go away" really crack me up. You seem to love your little world and are fearful of anyone updating it. I just upgraded my 3GS to the 4 and haven't had any problem, but it's a phone people, not your child! I use the iPhone because I believe it's one of the best smart phones on the market. Most of my use is business related and it has really help me be much more productive. However, you fanboys really need to get a dose of reality. I've been an AT&T user for many years and the iPhone has the worst phone reception of any phone I've owned. I travel extensively in the US, small towns and big cities. My AT&T data card always works great, but the iPhone is less than stellar. It's understandable, as apple is new in this market and still learning about cell phones.
My main point is that the people complaining about problems with their new, high cost phone, have a legitimate gripe. All the fanboy's saying otherwise are just quite ignorant.

People on all sides have dug in their heels on this. People's egos are puffed up and emotional capital has been spent. So lets face it. No matter what Apple says or does tomorrow won't be good enough.

If they remedy the issue with an exchange/revision without antenna problem, I think everyone will be satisfied. Except Apple. :p

Lets say 99 out of 100 people would not be effected even if they were not using a case or a bumper. Lets say that 9 out of 10 people use some kind of protector for their phone. This problem only effects 1 in 1,000 people. The other 999 have better reception than they did with the 3GS (and probably better than a Droid by a large bit.)

Wow good thing I did not buy the iphone 4 haha im still with 3GS and when I tell my friend who has the better iPhone it will be ME! hahaha

Except where the phone is unable to perform its primary function then it needs to be fixed......no excuse or workaround. Why release it on the first place if it is unable to work as a phone.

So far I have 3 hours and 33 minutes of my iPhone 4 performing it's primary function. And as you can see I do not have stellar signal strength...

I think anyone who says that the phone is unusable is making things up. The phone has a bug, yes. Some of the bugs will be fixed or mitigated in future updates. But even as it is right now - it is still an amazingly capable piece of hardware that works perfectly fine.

I swear people hold Apple to way higher standards than anyone else.

There are all kinds of problems with all kinds of Motorola and HTC android phones and there are all kinds of problems with Verizon - but for some reason those never make the cover of newspapers or headlines on CNN.

Look, the iPhone 4 has some bugs. It happens. I have personally myself written software that had bugs in it, and I had to fix them with updated versions. I have also built things that had unsolvable hardware flaws but still worked just fine.

I am not an Apple apologist. Apple made a PR mistake I think. But I am really tired of all the people saying the phone is an absolute failure because that is simply not true. It works just fine.

God some days I wish the Internet had never been invented. Sure there were stupid people before but the stupid people were so much more "contained".

It is a phone. It has a couple bugs. Some may not be fixed. No one forces you to keep the phone. You can use an iPhone 3GS if you want to keep your apps or go to and android or webOS phone if you don't need to keep your apps. The iPhone is not more expensive than any of the other comparable smartphones (in fact some regular phones cost as much as the iPhone 4).

No one has EVER in the history of consumer electronics made a completely bug free product. Just be happy that now in this day and age we have updatable software and firmware on devices so many bugs can be fixed.

And i'm not understanding why your mother dropped you on the head so hard. Are you really this dumb in real life or are you just trolling? I just purchased a new product, is it too much to expect for it to work well? Why should i have to downgrade because apple made a design flaw?

when they designed the f117a stealth fighter, then innovative "stealth" exterior was so radically new that it rendered the craft aerodynamically unstable. so much so that a human pilot can't fly it without complex computer assistance.

imagine that a plane that can't fly ... would you call that a design flaw!!
That's not really a "design flaw" solely attributed to the F-117. Nearly all modern jet fighters are "unstable" and suffer from horrible performance without computer assistance.

Dear 1st Post Ever Guy,

We are all tired of random people coming here calling who-ever a fan-boy. And why address this post in a letter anyways?

I just love when people resort to insults when they've got no meaningful reply.

Btw, it's not a downgrade if the phone you returned wasn't working.

I'm with Jobs. My phone works just fine and I am able to make calls in my home that I was never able to make with the 3GS.

I have the opposite problem. I can no longer make or receive a call at home without it dropping, whereas I was able to with my 3GS.

Dude, my point is this; you should be able to use the iphone 4 without problems, as we did with the 3GS, 3G, etc...

That's all I'm trying to say...

seriously, people on here make me laugh

i want a recall, i dont want a recall just a bumper, oh no possibly could not want a crap bumper, its not fair i hate apple, they have ruined my life

everything is pure speculation, just god damn wait till tomorrow and all will be revealed and until it is CHILAX !!

But then what would there be to bitch about if we waited and actually heard it directly from Apple? I mean, there would be no trolling, name calling and insulting of one another.
Jeez, take all the fun out of it why don't you? :)

People on all sides have dug in their heels on this. People's egos are puffed up and emotional capital has been spent. So lets face it. No matter what Apple says or does tomorrow won't be good enough. Apple could recall the entire line, offer free replacements, free bumpers, free cases, refunds, you name it but the indignant crowd will reject it. They have to reject any solution because they have invested all their rage in the issue. Do you really think the ranting, foaming at the mouth, venom spewing, emotionally charged crowd will turn around and say, "Okay, that seems fair. That's okay. I can live with that." Not on your mother's grave they won't. Their reaction will make the Mel Gibson tapes look calm and rational. They can barely catch their breaths now between their spittle spraying tirades. I mean look at 'em in this very thread and tell me I'm wrong. Primordial rage trumps rational thinking every time.

You're missing a huge point. You wouldn't buy a bucket with a hole in it? So why buy a phone which can't act as a phone when you hold it normally? All I want is a phone that works that doesn't force me to have a bumper/case/tape. It's a product that's not fit for purpose. Hundreds of thousands know and accept that. We don't have ego's to fill; it's the fact we have bought into a phone that has a major hardware fault.

Some people go over the top, but you don't have to tarnish everyone with the same brush here. I'm not majorily annoyed and so furious I'd be like the hulk. I just want a major corp like Apple to put their hands up and deal with it.

While recalls are fairly rare for situations where safety isn't compromised, I don't understand why people think it's only in those situations where recalls occur.

Anyone remember the Pentium III 1.13 Ghz fiasco? Intel recalled every single one due to a glitch that would occur in a couple of potential situations.

And that wasn't even the first time Intel had issued recalls for a product.

It's rare, but mostly certainly not unheard of.
