I don't want a bumper. I'll take a replacement that works or I'm returning the phone.
Apple has been doing this for years, acting like **** isn't wrong and it's just normal.
Like my macbook pro issue that somehow loses the keyboard and trackpad (even disappears from the sys preferences) but apple acts like there's nothing wrong.

For all the good he's done, it's time for Steve Jobs to step down. This is a really basic decision, and he failed his company, his customers and his investors. When form causes the basic function of the product to fail, it's time to rethink your design. Doesn't get much more simple than that.

Wow, they better have a good answer for the people who don't want to deal with the hardware flaw.

They already have one. Return the phone.

People are being insane about this. Seriously, if the phone doesn't work and you won't return it for a refund, something is wrong with you.

Knew the Whole Time

I think that the arrogance that comes from Mr. Jobs is that they were informed of the problem right at the launch, as stated in previous posts, so in his "Not an issue. Stay tuned" email was that they already had the fix and just need time to get it produced.
I also don't believe there will be a recall but an in house fix at the Genius Bar or something. Or like posted by another member said, maybe an extension of warranty for certain serial number batches.

I must admit, I am now glad to still have my 3GS. I have always held true to my notion of not buying a first generation of anything. Let the bugs get worked out!

iPhone 4 in 2011!!!

its not a flawed design

when they designed the f117a stealth fighter, then innovative "stealth" exterior was so radically new that it rendered the craft aerodynamically unstable. so much so that a human pilot can't fly it without complex computer assistance.

imagine that a plane that can't fly ... would you call that a design flaw!!

similarly the new iphone has a new innovative antenna, that no other phone has ever had. i'm not an engineer but i assume there is lot of complex software built into the phone that compensates for slight changes in signal reception that occur when you get into a car, when you walk into a building, when you throw the phone in your purse, and yes, when you pick it up.

no doubt as apple releases new software updates, they will try to perfect the software that controls the antenna reception and thus solve the "defect".

just my thoughts ...

Wow, major disappointment. I was really hoping for a fix. All the respect I've had for Apple is gone out the window...

Since they are not planning a recall? will that mean people who bought the iphone 4 cannot return it?

I still don't get how hardcore fan boy's back up everything Apple has to offer.. Its so irritating..

EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES.. including Apple.

Good. No recall is needed. The phone works fine, I've never dropped a call with it since the first day it was released. ATT's network could be better though, especially 3g data, but I don't have any issue with the iPhone 4 itself.

Wow the brain washing is strong in this one.

When do we begin the protest at the apple stores. I know some say return the phones, but what of the hundreds we have invested in apps we cannot use in OS X, or transfer/sell our licensees to.

We need to bring as much bad press on apple as possible for them to fix the issue or refund our money spent on apps we cannot use.

If apple screws us tomorrow, that day will be rembered as the day Android won.

Return your phone, Apple isn's responsible for what else you bought, that you can use on multiple other platforms. The majority of iphone 4 users are return iphone users. You can use them on other devices.

And ANYONE that buys a newly developed product on the day of launch was stupid for not waiting anyway. Xbox anyone? Always wait a month or two. Welcome to electronics.

I also doubt the free bumper plan. I predict they announce a changed manufacturing plan so new phones don't have the issue, and if you do have it, you can exchange/replace.

this.

I reckon they have found a fix and are just going to announce it tomorrow, apologise for the error and return/replacement policies will be extended for those with a specific serial number and below.

and also announce the white iphone with the fix (maybe show what they have actually done)

They already have one. Return the phone.

People are being insane about this. Seriously, if the phone doesn't work and you won't return it for a refund, something is wrong with you.

This is the answer if they also refund all money spent on apps or open a marketplace where they can be sold. If not, then Retun the Phone as an answer will fail

I hate saying it, but this whole issue is quickly and surely spiraling down hill.

When will people put their egos behind them?

Yeah when will people just return their phone for a refund, instead of letting their ego of deserving an iPhone get in the way?

I hate how people feel it's their God-given right to use an iPhone. Apple already offers to buy the phone back from you at full cost if you're not happy with it, I don't see why they even need to hold this press conference. People need to realise that there are bigger worries in life.

It is weird. It is becoming almost psychotic in some cases. It is like trying to take a poo-stained binky away from a little kid to wash it. They just won't let go no matter what. But they keep telling you it smells bad.

A recall is a stupid move. If not happy with iPhone, ask for a refund.

You don't even have to ask. They have said they will give one. I really don't have any sympathy for anyone at this point who has had serious problems with their phone and has not returned it for a refund. They are acting foolishly, in my opinion. This is just another thing to get their hopes up, and they will keep doing it until they are past their return window, and then they will be forced to keep the phone and blame it all on Apple when it is 100% their own fault.

Apple probably leaked this to get peoples expectations in line with the announcement. All of a sudden everyone is thinking a recall is coming and they don't want to dissapoint.

This makes sense. That analyst rumor about a recall was ridiculous, so Apple trying to shape expectations with a "legitimate" news organization to get people in line makes sense.

If there is no recall tomorrow, which is likely, you will still have lots of people here saying, "But they said there was going to be a recall and there should be a recall."

Hopefully all those people with broken phones will learn tomorrow that Apple was not kidding and is not kidding ,and if their phone does not work they should turn it in for a refund before it is too late.

This issue isn't a big deal for me.

However, if it was, I would certainly not accept bumpers as a solution. For starters, they would have to also supply a replacement dock that fitted an iPhone 4 with the bumpers, and come to install a new iPhone holder in my car that fitted an iPhone with bumpers.

As I've said before, you don't recall a non-dangerous product that the vast majority of buyers are very happy with. You let dissatisfied customers return/repair/exchange, but it has never made one ounce of sense that they would recall a safe product over an issue that many people don't experience.

Exactly. "Recall" is a big, scary word to consumers. It makes it sound as though everyone is in potential danger. "Exchange" is a much nicer word that only involves those who wish to be a part of it.
