are we guaranteed a phone next friday with this and I ordered two will i be able to cancel one?

Nothing is guaranteed, but once AT&T unfu*ks themselves you should get an email verifying your eligibility and be able to complete your order. And you should be able to cancel one without any issues.

Took 2 hrs to finally order one. I wanted to use Apple.com but it never worked. Finally got through as a Premier customer on ATT and it went through. Interesting it says theres a 18$ upgrade fee which they added to the price, but it also says it will be on the bill.. and tax is TBD.

same here.. hate dealing with AT&T and bought every other iPhone through apple, but i am tired and want to go to bed. didn't want to repeat last year iPhone 4 fiasco where i literally tried all day, and got my preorder in at 9:30 pm, right before they ran out.

night all! and good luck

Hey guys! I've been a lurker on MacRumors forums for a while but decided to join.

I ordered the 4S 16Gb in Black successfully on ATT's site about 30 mins ago after being up since 3.

Anyway's, I was also able to SUCCESSFULLY reserve one on Apple's website too before is went down (This was before ATT FINALLY put up their pre-order correctly.

My question is: Will I be able to cancel this reservation with Apple because clearly I don't need to Iphones?

HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WILL ANSWER THIS :D

If you were doing an upgrade, and the order at AT&T is processed first, AT&T will tell Apple you're not eligible for an upgrade once they actually are able to check AT&T's system. If Apple goes through first, it will not put any kind of "hold" on your upgrade status, so AT&T's order will go through fine. Apple will still ask you to pay for an iPhone in that situation, but just don't.

If you are a new customer then I have no idea. If for some reason you get two phones, just send one back within 3 days to avoid paying for any monthly bills.

The lesson for Apple to learn from this is that they cannot rely on their partners to make for a flawless launch. They just don't have the bandwidth to handle the number of customers that Apple drives to them during a launch --- even a supposedly disappointing new model that should have been far better after sixteen months.

I'm sure I will be labeled an iSheep by many for upgrading my 3GS to a 4S since there are just so many Android phones that out-spec the iPhone which is clearly only "mediocre". After all, they also told me my iPad 2 was a "softball upgrade" when I sold my iPad and bought it -- and I have been loving the iPad 2 every since I got it.

I'm interested to see the sales numbers on this launch. Lot's of 3GS and 3G owners are finally upgrading. Being on the "dot release" cycle with Apple also has some benefits since you don't experience the quirks that sometimes come with the redesigned form factor. I think the iPhone 4 antenna out-performs my 3GS, but I am very interested to see how this dynamic switching antenna works out (unless of course there is a software bug in the switching algorithm).

Anyway... I am relieved that they just gave reservations. Every one of these launches needs to be reservation-based. The carriers will never have the capacity for this sort of event.

Yes, the carrier portals have been a problem in the past, but to be honest, the Apple site itself failed at various points on each online launch as well. You make it sound like they were solid throughout and the carriers were the only failure but that's simply not true.

One problem with preordering directly through AT&T is that they don't offer the new accidental coverage that covers drops, etc.: AppleCare+. And, that must be bought at the time of purchase and can't be added later. AT&T doesn't even have it as an option.

I got a service discount too on my data plan... what's that about?

I have a FAN discount on my minute package, but not on any of my features...

made it through!

Been getting errors from ATT.com:

"There was a problem with your request.

P1234: We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are unable to support this request online. Please contact Premier Support at 1-866-499-8008 Monday to Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eastern Time for assistance with your request. Please reference Error P1234 if you speak to a representative about this error."

AND Apple.com during the AT&T verification process: "Your request couldn’t be processed.

We’re sorry, but there was an error processing your request. Please try again later."

on the phone now, on hold with ATT... hopefully I'll eventually get through...

I finally got through on the ATT website. Woot Woot!

I used to work for Apple and still get a discount on my plan lol.

Yes they do, it was at the bottom of the page with your 4S options.

After trying apples site for two hours with no luck, I went to AT&T's site and it worked the first time. Can't wait to get it! Wished I would have tried that earlier! Now for some sleep.

FINALLY got to the end of the AT&T order process and all was looking GREAT, but realized that they have the accountants address in California on the account and can only ship it to the address on file. (I'm in MA). Ughhh.

So went back to Apple..... After a few tries.....

"Your iPhone has been reserved."

White 64GB :D

Now just going to sleep and to wait for my email.
Night all!

Apparently the upgrade eligibility varies. I have the same story as you. Not eligible til 11/25 but I don't want to take my chances with the Thanksgiving holidays, so I'll just get it now. Spoke to an ATT rep and she said the eligibility for an upgrade is supposed to be anywhere from 15-20 months as opposed to common belief that it's only a year wait.

My AT&T upgrade eligibility has been 12 months for a few years now.

The Apple site only Reserved, so I tried ATT and it worked great. First time using ATT's site. Normally Apple site is better on these launch dates. Maybe ATT has improved their site for this type of volume or I was just lucky.

AT&T Website worked fine

Tried Apple site for 45 min. Went to AT&T and I upgraded 2 phones in 5 minutes.

Thanks a lot for answering but my real question should have been: Is there a way to cancel the reservation? I havent put any information into Apple to actually process to order, it's simply reserved and it said I had to Saturday to enter the rest of the information. Should I just let it expire that way?

Thanks again!

Tried ordering with att and got an email from apple website saying they reserved the phone and will email me once they verify it from att? wtf!

Guys, if you are trying to order a Verizon iPhone, I would just go to the Verizon site and order. It was WAY easier than I expected, everything went through perfectly the first time and my delivery by 10/14 is set. The Apple site (which I tried first) was a disaster.

I have a reserved iPhone 4s at apple.com but have not checked out yet... this is different anyone else getting this ...

Me too. Isn't it nice that they don't continually verify that stuff? ^_^

But it was my understanding it only gets applied to the main line's voice plan, and not anything else...

Not arguing! Lol

So sad. Steve Jobs always thought the user experience was most important, and this is how Apple honors him after his passing - with the WORST launch day experience ever.

How is this the "worst launch day experience ever" ? Clearly you weren't part of that group of original iPhone purchasers on day 1 trying to activate on friday evening only to have Apple/AT&T disconnect your old cell phone but NEVER activate the new phone for the entire friggin' weekend. Try being a techy who has to be on call through that suddenly without any phone.

Ordered my 16GB, and supposedly have a confirmation number. We'll see how the rest of this pans out. I wonder if when I confirm it'll upsell me an Applecare plan because I'm surprised that wasn't an option right from the get-go.
