I just called Apple and asked about this. First off, I was told that it is true... applecare+ must be purchased at the same time as the phone. The customer service rep put me on hold for a while then came back and said that since the AT&T website didn't offer it for purchase the only way I can get it is to bring the phone to an Apple Store within a couple days of receiving it and I can purchase it there.

Apple Now Accepting Pre-Orders for iPhone 4S, Unlocked Coming in November

I just called Apple and asked about this. First off, I was told that it is true... applecare+ must be purchased at the same time as the phone. The customer service rep put me on hold for a while then came back and said that since the AT&T website didn't offer it for purchase the only way I can get it is to bring the phone to an Apple Store within a couple days of receiving it and I can purchase it there.
Two quick questions.
1) Had to order at AT&T last night due to Apple site issues. Does AT&T ship the phone sealed like Apple, or do they open it up? In the stores, it's annoying how they open it all up. I hope, ordering online, it comes sealed???
2) Anyone else have to remove their 200 text messages for $5 per month? This is quite annoying. Well AT&T, I will use iMessage then, and you won't get the $5 x 2 from me anymore.
Finally, we're used to it for years, but it still gripes me to pay $175 per month and $450 for this phone, and get the $18 "upgrade," fee.

next Friday early in the AM and I'm getting my 64GB White one. On the last launch in February, there were 7 people at the front waiting. I bet I can get one when they open. Verizon is kinda tricky, when you do the online thing and you are grandfathered in with the Unlimited Data, the system doesn't recognize Unlimited anymore, you have to accept a plan and then call 611 to get back into unlimited. I'm saving the grief and I'm doing it in my store and giving the sale to my favorite Verizon employee, she's a sweetheart and she helps me with every one of my issues. Too bad I won't be buying any accessories from her, not even a case. I'm buying Magpul cases (http://store.magpul.com/product/MAG451/125), $9.99, they really protect and they Match my Boom-Boom Stick.

Yeah looks like this failure (iPhone 4S) is showing same signs of failling like the previous failure (iPhone 4). Go figure
That's because the iP 4s comes with a ball ping hammer and kitchen roller so owners can use hammer to tapper phone to the desire tear drop design and use roller to flatten 3.5" screen to desired 4"+!

Sounds like I should have just got up at 6:30 EDT to order. Oh well.
I did end up getting two iPhones pre-ordered through AT&T (one for my wife and one for myself). We both currently have a 3Gs, so the 4s will be a nice upgrade. The whole process, between waiting for the sites to come up, error messages and web pages timing out, took two hours.
I now see that I have also "reserved" a iPhone through Apple. This would be a third phone. I don't want it. Tried calling Apple and can't get through. Went on the website and don't see how to cancel the reservation. I suppose, worst case scenario, it sits there till tomorrow at 5:00 PDT. Anyone have suggestions on how I can release that one?

To those who preordered through Sprints website - have you received a confirmation email yet? I see they charged my CC immediately, but I have yet to receive any type of email from Sprint. Then when I go to chec my order status on their site it says it's down. Wtf....

I just tried to order a phone through Apple, clicked the "Check Out Now" button, and got a 404 Not Found error... trying again.
I would guess that you can take your new iPhone into an apple store and show that it is in working condition and get AppleCare+ at anytime.
I noticed as well At&T didn't give me the option. Originally went to Apple's site... Said there was an issue... Went to AT&T's and didn't have any problems... Except I wanted to order AppleCare and a bumper.

Why don't you sell your iP4 on ebay, 16BG still is worth 400+, with the money you can buy an early upgrade.. I have many friends that do this every year.. It's free money...
Do I really have to change my ATT data plan?? Mine is suppose to be the old non tier plan, but even ATT site says my new device requires modification to the plan, and please choose one.

Just ordered though the app store app on my iPhone 4. 16gig white delivered the 14th with no issues.

It's not about the money...I'm just not interested in 4S. I will wait for the next upgrade 'cause I am perfectly fine with my 4.
