I just got a charge from AT&T for 256 dollars. First of all, I thought it said it was only going to be 200, and second, I thought we didn't get charged until it shipped?

Mine was only $212.93 including tax. This is for the 16GB Black version through Verizon. If you're in RI or CA, you'll get charged the tax on full price not discounted price though. :(

I know what you mean. Chase is a headache if God forbid you need to use your card in a slightly different pattern or for a company in a different country even if it is a huge conglomerate.

I've had issues going to different states. We were in California last month tasting wine, and everyone except me had their card declined in the most unusual of places (department stores, grocery stores, etc.). They all went right through at the wineries, though. :D

What the hell man. I'm gonna call and ask why and threaten to switch to Verizon. Not only was AT&T the last site to have the preorder, they also charge more!

It's has nothing to do with AT&T... it's your state. Taxes come from your State not from the company.

dude thats not something at&t controls relax. verizon would have the same thing as well. its a state tax

Damn.

Please note, your credit card will be charged at time of shipment. If using either a credit or debit card, funds in the amount of purchase will be immediately held and not available for other use. Credit and debit card transactions will not appear in your account until time of shipment.

It has nothing to do with the cell phone company you're with but rather what state you live in. Unless you decide to move into a new state with a lower tax, you're stuck with that price no matter what carrier you're on.

I had luck on Verizon's website. I've been waiting to use my upgrade credit for the iPhone launch. I set my alarm for 1:50 am (Central Time) and got on to Verizon with no issues. By 2:11 am I had the form done and order in. Went back to bed and had the confirmation email in my inbox at 5:30 am. With my upgrade credit I got the phone for $175 and it's saying it should ship by October 14th. I'm hoping the ship date stands as I'd like to have my new phone by the time I leave for Denver the following week.

I pretty much experienced the same. Because I had my new every 2 credit, I just did it through Verizon's site and seemed to miss the massive downtime that Apple, AT&T and Sprint all experienced. I was completing my order before the '12:01' PST launch (I was in at 11:57 and hitting submit right at midnight). I got my email from VZW at 12:38 AM and it says my phone will ship with delivery on the 14th.

Pretty easy pre-order for me. My AT&T friends who were trying to re-up (and one jumping to Sprint) all had hiccups getting them processed.

This is how it is for all purchases (pre-ordered or not) regardless of the company selling the item. They make sure you have the funds to pay, but won't charge you until the item ships.

I hope this doesn't that mean my iPhone will arrive a few days/weeks after October 14.

Similar screen here too. What a crappy, chunky, and vague data dump they give us, compared to apple.com's status screen. Somehow it doesn't look encouraging to me on the timeliness issue either.

Two quick questions.

2) Anyone else have to remove their 200 text messages for $5 per month? This is quite annoying. Well AT&T, I will use iMessage then, and you won't get the $5 x 2 from me anymore.

After seeing your post I quickly double checked my receipt and I was actually able to keep my original 200 text messages plan. I ordered iphone 4S through apple.com, not sure if that makes any difference.

+1 with that experience. Apple's order page was asking me to select voice and texting plans that were at odds with (and more expensive than) my existing family plans with ATT. It wasn't clear what the deal would be with that; was my "second" family line's cost going to rise from 9.95 to 60 a month?? So I switched to AT&T's site to make sure (hopefully) that my family/cheaper plans got grandfathered in. The order (32gb black) went through smoothly on the first try.

First phone order thru AT&T here; fingers crossed.

Same here - Apple seemed to handle family plan in a hinky fashion. It seems geared to a single-line upgrade. AT&T had no issues and ordering went through fine.

Don't cancel it. I ordered through AT&T last year and still got it a day early. They handle it in the same manner that Apple does. No open boxes, good shipping...etc.

Your good to go.

That's what I'm hoping. A rational system would centralize the orders and have them sent out from the same place, rather than sending 30% of the orders to Apple's shippers, 25% to Verizon, 25% to AT&T, and 20% to Sprint (or whatever).

someone can tell me why the hell i can't preorder via apple store online app??
i want to preorder the iPhone and get it in the store! but it seems that iPhone preorders are not available that way!

Dude, this happens every year when you can preorder any device actually. It has to stay on back ordered status to make sure devices don't ship out right away, they'll ship out next week.

It's weird

Neither my pre-order nor my mother's pre-order will work online. It's telling us we need to go to an Apple Store.

Same thing happened last year with the 4's. Everyone was freaking out because it said backordered, but as soon as it ships it will change to shipped. It's backordered because they don't have them yet. Plus las year most of the pre-orderers had the phone delivered a day early.

i dont know what to think! LOL i THINK i've got my order placed.

i got through and put all my info and CC info in, clicked "process" i think it was, and then the site froze up.

now when i go back, i am no longer eligible for an upgrade (which was not the case before i got through)

my credit card has the charge pending. and when i go to my at&t account, that says im not eligible for an upgrade until 2013 (which changed since i was eligible yesterday)

things are looking positive...i think lol

I am with AT&T and I ordered via the Apple website. I used to have the $5.00 messaging plan. My only available options were now pay as you go or $20.00 unlimited.

I really wanted to keep my $5.00 for 200 as the most text messages I have *ever* had a month was 110. The $5.00 plan was perfect for me.
