Firewire 400 missing from new MacBook Pro

If I heard right, the new Pro has eliminated the Firewire400 port (1394a).

This is going to be a HUGE problem for videographers using MacBook Pro's to download raw footage, as most videocams have 400, not 800 (1394b).

Frankly, I don't want to have to use an express card, and the problems that will ensue to be able to use my cam. Guess I'll stick with my older Macbook Pro 17 that HAS the 400 port (I also have external hard drives at 400 to contend with)

GRRRRRR!!!!

apple dares to say that the white mb is new :D
the hardware specs are the same just a little price dumb...
i guess average joe wont notice and will be happy

Hang on... Here in the UK did the white MacBook just GO UP in price????

Its saying £719 lol

Yup.

I think I got mine lappys just before the specs went downhill.. a semi decent graphics card doesn't make up for the multi colour looks (very 1980's) and lack of matte display

No more anti-reflective screen, glare only. To bad. Looks like Apple has sold out to the mass market. I wonder how many profesional photographers will have to move back to using PCs. or is this the reason for the new 24" ACD. The idea is that you plug your MBP in to that?

Except that it's glossy too. Huzzah

Applecare

I'm thrilled because I can buy the MB Pro and 24" LED display under a single Applecare protection :)

So, the only difference between the MacBook and the MacBook pro now is the size of the screen and a FW800 port? That ridiculous double-graphics-chipset thing makes no sense to me, and certainly isn't worth the additional $700. I'm guessing the MB is definitely going to steal some potential MBP buyers. And "pros buy the MacBook Pro" is kind of a silly retort to that, SJ, especially when you're only offering a glossy screen.

Macbook can't steal pro users cause the worthless piece of plastic doesn't even have a firewire drive. lol obs wants people to pay an extra $1000 for a "pro" computer with 1 port and no options. What a nazi

Hmmm, I was planning on getting the MBP mainly for the 30" video out support, but now that the macbook does that too i'll have to think about it.

I agree with Jobs on Blue-ray. To me it is still very new and very expensive when it comes to the price of disks.

And I am happy with the updates. Of course I am rolling my eyes at the price of the new MB's. But then again I think everyone is. To bad the old MB is not priced at $899 or such.

Looks like I have zero incentive to replace the Macbook pro I bought in July. I don't like the new model virtually at all. I would much rather have the design, and keyboard I have now. I like the all silver and smooth together keyboard. The minor upgrades that have been made, are not worth it. What a disappointment.

Blu ray is a gimmick. Firs of all you need dual or should I say triple format? Read/burn CD/DVD/Bluray.
So what?
These drives are readily available.
UK price for the white macbook went up
£1,149.00 for the top macbook!! OUCH that hurts my wallet
New MacBooks £949 and £1149?! SO expensive.
The UK prices have actually gone up, rather than going down. Well done Apple.
What the hell is Apple thinking?

In the US the drop the base macbook by $100 ie. 1099 to 999, yet now the uk applestore is up i see the base model is £719, £20 MORE expensive than it was this morning..... WTF
£949 for the cheapest new MacBook??? This is going to leave a lot of people out in the cold :(
I hate to break it to you, but your currency considerably lost value against the dollar since the last time Apple updated their notebooks. No wonder that prices are higher.

I know this is a bad thing - but it's not Apple's fault.

Eh, the aluminum MacBooks are nice, but not quite enough to make me send my current MacBook packing immediately.

Also, no mention of the Mini. I was hoping someone would at least ask about it at the end. Checked the Apple store, no unannounced upgrade for it. It's exactly the same as before. Oh well, guess I'm still holding my breath until the desktop update...

So the 17's are being "refreshed" but not getting any of the updates? Does that make any sense? As far as blue ray I agree, who cares about blue ray, I don't want to pay the cash for the br discs and I prefer to download my movies anyhow.

The glossy screen sucks, but it appears they are bailing on plastic as much as possible and you aren't going to have matte glass. I wonder if the glass is a durability issue?

You're not going to cram a Quadro FX 3700M or a 9800M GTX into a 0.95" chassis..... you'll find those in 7-10 pound 1.5"-2" thick machines, for the most part.

Form...over...function...

Enjoy tilting your screen.

Q: Are you going to have matte screens or just go with glossy glass ones? How about with reflection problems?
A: Just glass, and we’re going to compensate for the reflection from pushing more light through the back. And, since these are notebooks, you can position it any way you want.

(that has to be the most utterly moronic thing I've heard for a very long time)

Q: Concern about the glossy screens. Are you going to offer another option?
A: Steve: We're going all glass -- we won't offer another version. Phil: You offset the reflection by the brightness, and consumers love it. One of the great things about a notebook is you can turn it however you want!

This is the worst of the lot... I thought the whole point of the Macbook Pro was that it wasn't a consumer machine but a 'pro' machine? As a photographer and designer how the hell is a super-contrasty, over saturated piece of 'glass' going to help me?

Find me a single professional who thinks this glossy piece of sh*t really is going to enhance their work... Afterall, it's about ACCURATE colour reproduction!

Yah, apple website is back. I had idea that they will leave plastic macbook available, but seems it is gone... THANKS FOR MAKING MOST POPULAR LAPTOP LESS AFFORDABLE!:mad::mad:

i have to think twice about this:

$2500 for a MBP that is 5.5 LB or $1500 for a MB that is 4.5 LB.

i also have to check how the glossy screen looks like, wifi reception, sound, hope the glass screen doesn't break too easily.

good thing is in less than 3 month there will be matte foils or anti glare sprays available.:D

umpf, but it's expensive. maybe a white 2.4GHz refurb macbook is the better choice:confused:

if you can't afford the car

To all the people whining about how much mac notebooks cost.

SHUT UP!!!!

If you cant afford to play then don't play!
stay home with your jenky windows laptop and save your money if you want to get a mac

Glass screen... laptop... anyone else think this is one of the dumbest design ideas in a while? I don't care how careful you are, laptops get dropped. The glass trackpad I can see and am actually looking forward to, but the screen? I hate it on the iMac but on a laptop its just a bad idea.

And no Blu-ray?! Come on Apple. At least offer it as an option. Blu-ray is pretty much standard on high-end PC laptops.

Other than those two things though, these look like really sweet new laptops.
