Looks like the 17" MBP is still without the black screen.

On the configure page matt now reads antiglare so they are admitting the glossy has glare ?
It's a pity the 17" still has the timebomb graphics card sheesh.
Did they drop the hi-res option or is it now standard ?
Thank god they kept the acd displays particulary the 30" but for how long considering Steve's comment about going all glass ?
The obsession with thinness also irks me what about cooling ?
Multitouch is not pro imho
They are gonna clear up with the display adapters rather unsightly and unecersary imho
Otherwise i'm blase

I dont get it, these will sell like hotcakes guarenteed. There sexy, no way around that. Just because you didnt get glossy and the outdated FW400 is gone means apple will surely fail now.....right.

The UK store has the new models but no evidence of any change at all to the 17" model - even though they said in the Q&A it was also being "refreshed" today :(

The new wonderful Macbooks have no firewire, right ? FOr $1599 plus tax... $2000.... no firewire ? I'm just double checking :)

Mini DisplayPort has sound, evident as the new monitor has speakers and no other cable. Yet you can't get a MiniDP <-> DP adaptor.

DVI and dual link DVI adaptors are shockingly priced. :(

So what?
These drives are readily available.

I hate to break it to you, but your currency considerably lost value against the dollar since the last time Apple updated their notebooks. No wonder that prices are higher.

I know this is a bad thing - but it's not Apple's fault.
It's not costing them any more than when they were selling them for cheaper yesterday, and it's certainly costing them less than it did six months ago when they released them.

Idk about you guys, but I think it looks very, very sexy. I really say "Hello" to this mac.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that there are between 5000-10000 graphic designers living and working in most major cities in North America. A huge number of us represent a major market for MacBook Pros. Do the math.

MY GOD someone who actually understands where I'm coming from! I'm not bashing the design it's great, specs are great etc but for me I feel like they took away the iMac as a cheaper option for home and now I have no real pro option for portable.

Have any of you supposed "pros" actually, I dunno, used a screen that's covered in glass? I'm not particularly aware of any currently on the market.

But some of the people wailing about it I don't think have used even a "glossy" screen (not what these are)! And by "use" I mean "really use" not toy with in a retail store (the extra-bright overhead lights in a retail setting are nothing like a production or home environment). The un-matted, "shiny" displays just tend to let more light through, providing more vivid colours. Glass-covered screens seem like the next evolution of that. I can't wait to see one in person.

The new designs look beautiful to me. But while the hardware/construction/design might actually justify it now, the price is still on the absurd side for a computer these days. At least they now have existent video cards...as long as these nVidia chips don't blow up like the last ones. Jobs, please forgive ATI already!

I am definitely not a fan of glossy screens.

However, the old screens are plastic, right? Maybe these glass ones will be better? We will have to wait and see.

Blah blah said the non-professional.

Video editor. What's your job? I don't use ANY computer screen for color correction in my work. None of them are as good as broadcast monitors.

It's never been a perfect world in notebooks

I agree! That's my point. Yesterday the Macbook Pros were "not perfect" for this stuff and today they're still "not perfect" for color work.

So what's changed? Nothing! That's my point...that laptops aren't perfect for this kind of stuff.

You argued with me, but didn't disagree with my point! What are you arguing about, anyway?

If I heard right, the new Pro has eliminated the Firewire400 port (1394a).

This is going to be a HUGE problem for videographers using MacBook Pro's to download raw footage, as most videocams have 400, not 800 (1394b).

Frankly, I don't want to have to use an express card, and the problems that will ensue to be able to use my cam. Guess I'll stick with my older Macbook Pro 17 that HAS the 400 port (I also have external hard drives at 400 to contend with)

GRRRRRR!!!!
Not a problem at all; Firewire 800 is fully backwards compatible with Firewire 400. A bilingual cable will allow the connection of older devices to the newer port.

$99 macbook has a superdrive!

Here are the specs: so the did the right thing:

From the press release:
An updated 13-inch white MacBook featuring 2.1 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processors, a 120GB 5400 rpm hard drive and a slot-load 8X SuperDrive® is now available for $999 (US).

This "problem" is exactly as "HUGE" as getting 9-to-6-pin FireWire cable. Which is available for like 5$, shipped to you from asia.

Wow, No 17 Inch!

Very surprised there is no 17 inch model yet.

And all Glossy.

Very happy I got my 17" 2.6ghz last January now.

Nice new design and features however.

Form...over...function...

Enjoy tilting your screen.

I'm just saying, this isn't new. The PowerBook G4 and MacBook Pro have never used the absolute top of the line or workstation class graphics cards. Why act like this is somehow new in this case?

If you've absolutely needed a Quadro or a 9800M GTX, you've always had to go to a 1.5"-2" thick 7-10 pound 17" machine (or a really heavy 15" machine).

the macbook is not a higher price in the UK than before, they just got rid of the low end models!

Love the look of the new Macbook - but it's far too expensive in the UK. I can't justify that amount for a mid-spec laptop.
