Well its true hardware wise you can get more bang for the buck outside mac period but you don't OSX or any the usability aspects Macs offer with they're engineered laptops or hardware. I am worried about the durability of the glass being able to take bump or mild jarring but I am still on board to get one in the month or so as soon as I actually get my hands on in a store. The only thinkg I hate is the Mac geeks at the store like to stalk you and treat as if you are some kind of idiot. I had to tell the one at the store I went to to stop talking and go away for a while so I can actually explore the notebook instead of just listening to his rehearsed speech. Either way I like OSX and I like the look of the design so far and I am a windows user but still going to switch.

i was very very happy until i went to the korea store and saw the price difference. damn, now not so happy.

1599 dollars is about 2,000,000 won

the store has it for 2,400,000 won.

thats another 300 bucks... grrrr... looks like a new old macbook for me.

No Blu-Ray makes sense from Apple's perspective. Provided they start letting us BUY HD movies and not just rent them.

I imagine BR would drive the battery down like crazy.

what a load of rubbish instead of actually lowering the price of the macbooks they seem to have gone up. the average joe is NOT going to pay 719GBP for a basic macbook when he can buy a PC laptop for 200GBP

im seriously losing faith in apple and their crap!

There goes the MacBook Pro .

10s of thousands of digital camera back users with FW 400 connections to spend a couple hundred bucks on new cables that might, or might not, work.
How do you connect the 'old' Cinema displays' FW 400 ports to that thing ?

Professionals do that, you know; USB doesn't cut it, it is too slow for big files.

All the displays are glossy:

Jason Chen:
Q: Are you going to have matte screens or just go with glossy glass ones? How about with reflection problems?
A: Just glass, and we’re going to compensate for the reflection from pushing more light through the back. And, since these are notebooks, you can position it any way you want.

Someone lost touch here. Professional my arse ...

Does anyone know how soon they will plop them out on display at the Apple retail stores (U.S.A.)? I think I have to touch one before I yank out the credit card.

I am not looking for a new computer, but was surprised to see only a $50 education discount on the new macbook.

The higher model macbook being $300 more than the lower model is confusing as well.

Well, these new lappies look awesome. I do feel sorry for the people who want matte screens, but as they're glass, I imagine it will be easy to buy a 3d party plastic anti-glare film and slap it on if you want.

BTW, I just popped over to the Apple site; the new sleep LED actually shines through the aluminum, how awesome is that!!

Also, very glad they are not using white plastic on the backside of screens, contrary to those spy photos.

Ah, but the loss of Firewire 400, and no Firewire at all on the MBs... that is really, really not good. :(

Hundreds of thousands, where did you dig that number from.

I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that there are between 5000-10000 graphic designers living and working in most major cities in North America. A huge number of us represent a major market for MacBook Pros. Do the math.

Looks like the MB Air is coming into it's own...

GeForce 9400M, 120 GB SATA/ 128GB SSD, 1.6 or 1.86 Core 2 Duo and 6MB L2 Cache??? Can somebody explain why the air has 2x the L2 Cache of the MB and MB Pro?

Seriously, the Air is shaping up into a very respectable laptop and I might consider this over the MB, if I feel the need to spend and extra $500.:p

I wonder if the current economic crisis has anything to do with making the MB I think $400 more? Uggh, anyway. I wanted alu so I'm going to have to pay.

So, still no Blu-ray... thats a shame. Guess I have to look on a Sony Vaio now instead... :(

in all the photos they showed on Engadget they didn't once show the back of the display for either the MBP or MB. Are they hiding something back there, or did Engadget just not take any photos showing the back?

So, the only difference between the MacBook and the MacBook pro now is the size of the screen and a FW800 port? That ridiculous double-graphics-chipset thing makes no sense to me, and certainly isn't worth the additional $700. I'm guessing the MB is definitely going to steal some potential MBP buyers. And "pros buy the MacBook Pro" is kind of a silly retort to that, SJ, especially when you're only offering a glossy screen.

The only people that aren't disappointed by this update are obvious Mac fanboys. $300 more for a Macbook with a weaker processor that doesn't even have a firewire port? They took out ports and features from the MBP and made it look like a cheap knockoff of an HP. Instead of lowering the prices, they raised them in this economy. No matte finish option on the MBP.

I love Jobs lame excuses for not having options or wanting to spend extra money to make his product up to par with other laptops that are wayyyyy cheaper. No Blu-Ray, no firewire, no matte finish, etc. I wouldn't take a new macbook or macbook pro for free because it would be useless. Enjoy your $3000 plastic toy with no options, no features . Apple stick to making your pink plastic cheap toys, cause these computers are pure garbage. Your 3 year old laptops are better. That is sad. Nice innovations. All you did was cut back everything and raise the price. idiots

No more anti-reflective screen, glare only. To bad. Looks like Apple has sold out to the mass market. I wonder how many profesional photographers will have to move back to using PCs. or is this the reason for the new 24" ACD. The idea is that you plug your MBP in to that?

Agreed. But am undecided as to whether I will spring for the "plastic" or get the refurbs. I think the aluminum are out of my budget, even with the discount

So this will bring the education price to 899, more than likely? Urgh, I just got a new laptop last year. I cant get a new one yet. :(

Laptop screens were NEVER suitable for this kind of work! If you were doing so, you obviously weren't that serious about it.

Blah blah said the non-professional. Most pro's in either design or photography use high end MATTE screens, CRTs and on the go MATTE finish laptops so they can get the CLOSEST MATCH in color reproduction. It's never been a perfect world in notebooks but apparently we can't give an honest opinion if the apple mob is involved. Comments on here make me rethink my long term use of mac products.

Feel free to blast me, I know it's coming I expect nothing less anymore.
