Yeah? So why've I got one in my Mac Pro? You mean, the Quadro doesn't benefit Need For Speed?

Typical.

What are you using your Quadro for and which do you have? Every benchmark that I have seen shows the 5600 operating similar to the 8800GT and the 4500 similar to the 7800GT which indicates to me that the drivers for the Quadros under OSX are not optimized. They are selling on the hardware benefits of steroscopic connection and 1.5GB of memory on the 5600.

Nothing like the performance benefits that the Quadro cards have under windows purely due to the drivers.

If I heard right, the new Pro has eliminated the Firewire400 port (1394a).

This is going to be a HUGE problem for videographers using MacBook Pro's to download raw footage, as most videocams have 400, not 800 (1394b).

Frankly, I don't want to have to use an express card, and the problems that will ensue to be able to use my cam. Guess I'll stick with my older Macbook Pro 17 that HAS the 400 port (I also have external hard drives at 400 to contend with)

GRRRRRR!!!!

Just use a FW 800 to FW 400 ended cable?

As far as UK price increases - at least get the student discount in whatever way you can folks!

i was really going to buy one of the macbooks but just to expensive.
new 24 inch imac for me:cool:
do you think they'll be updated at macworld or safe to buy now?

No price drop, No Blu-ray, Glossy only

Did price points just go up? I can't remember what they were at before, but I'm pretty sure the 13" MB started less than $1300. If I were getting something qualitatively better than 9 months ago for the same or more money, maybe I wouldn't complain. But I'm disappointed: to put it bluntly, I think this update is crap.

Besides the lacklust spec upgrade and lack of a price drop on the low end system, the lack of a price drop on solid state drive (though the market price of SSD's has dropped precipitously since they last priced it), besides the glossy-only option, I hate the two tone look. I'm not going to bite. Instead, I'm going to trawl craigslist for a used MB for on-the-go.

Single piece of aluminum? Whoop dee doo. Very disappointing update.

So.. what are the odds someone can hack this thing to use both video cards? I'd assume it's impossible since they're different cards...

What are the odds the 17" will get an even better card by January?

Find me a single professional who thinks this glossy piece of sh*t really is going to enhance their work... Afterall, it's about ACCURATE colour reproduction!

Why would you want a matte coating obscuring your colours, then? Colour-tuning monitors was, in part, a work-around grown from the inherent short coming of matted displays. Covering the screen with glass instead seems like an even better option than the "glossy" process that's been increasingly popular lately.

Edit: I should clarify that I was talking about post-CRT colour tuning before someone jumps all over me. Electron guns were a whole different can of worms.

No update on the RAM capabilities. 4GB max still, Pretty pathetic, the 'big' update, and they can't even compete with competitors who already provide notebooks with 8GB of RAM.

I love the way the US gets a $100 price reduction on the old crappy base model, and the uk store increases it by £20. So if I bougt it today before the event, I coulda saved £20. What a wast, its out of date and they hike the price!!!! Apple get a grip, where is the aggressive pricing that we were expecting. You always let us down here in the UK.......

The combo drive has been kicked into to touch thats why there is an almighty price hike. :D

Disappointed, is the one word that comes to mind. There is NOTHING that blows the competition out of the water - it only sinks the MacBook line even further! WTF? $1300 for a MacBook? No Express slot? No FireWire? This is so off the mark it cannot be true! Seriously! I paid $1400 for a WhiteBook with max ram and large HD but gave-up a LOT of expandability like to Express Slot! Why not add that? A $2k MBP? You cannot be serious! I think I might divest my Apple stock. They are LOOSING TOUCH with the customer base.

Wow - words escape me and I talk for a living...

D

Those glossy screen cost a lot less to make. Apple is saving a bundle.

The only people who care about the mat screens are a few pro photographers and graphic artists. Most people just want to use the notebooks are a media player for games, movies and the web. Glossy is best for that kind of use. For every profesional
that Apple losses as a customer they gain a "bazillion" casual users, gamers and others who like the shiny glass screen. I'm sure Apple has worked the numbers

I bought a new Macbook some time ago, but still prefer the screen of my old Imac which is mattee. Glossy screens make my eyes very tired.

Really wanted to buy the new Macbook / Macbook pro but with the glossy screens?? Sorry apple, you simply should add the option of non-glossy for the macbook pro.

Don't like how all the models(except air) look exactly alike. I liked how the pro's looked different from the macbooks. -if you couldn't tell I want a Pro.
Don't like the black keyboards, preferred the silver.
so disappointed!
I like glossy, so I actually like the screen.
I think it's BS though for those that prefer the matte finish.

Matte is only an option on the 17"... LAME. And now a glossy Cinema Display. LAME.

I know, the cinema display is another story... I work in a design studio using over 250, 23 inch cinema displays - I can pretty much guarantee what the WON'T be replaced with!

Massive Fail!

I use my firewire port in my macbook everyday for my audio production.

I dont like the 15" size as its not portable enough for gigging... where does that leave me when i need to upgrade..

Jeezuz Apple... did you forget that some professionals actually USE your laptops for other things than internet and photobooth !? WTF ?

the macbook is not a higher price in the UK than before, they just got rid of the low end models!

The bottom spec one is the same as the old bottom spec Macbook. Though I'm not sure if it now has a superdrive. I guess the £20 more might be for the superdrive but that seems pretty lame to me.

Have any of you supposed "pros" actually, I dunno, used a screen that's covered in glass? I'm not particularly aware of any currently on the market.

Yes.. I bought a 20in iMac and quickly had to buy a 2nd non-glass covered LCD so I could actually work on it. I should have just put the MacPro on credit and bit the big one but oh well. Trying editing large photos/documents with mostly black in them, and then say hello to your reflection.

In most cases the screen is fine but you cannot get around the mirror effect on dark documents/photos.

I'm happy with my SR MBP. This upgrade was minor. The new look is cool but I don't like how the MBP and MB look so similar now.

I like the physical trackpad butto, too. Call me old skool.

I like the new 24" LED Display...finally.
