Have any of you supposed "pros" actually, I dunno, used a screen that's covered in glass? I'm not particularly aware of any currently on the market.

I have. Back in 2003 I had a CRT that was cover in glass.

*SHOCK*

And I even knew color-perfection individuals who refused to go to LCD because it wasn't as accurate as their GLASS displays.

I feel so sad and angry I almost want to cry. The comment made about the glossy screens was on of the silliest things I've ever heard.

x2

I love visiting the Macrumors forum after an event. Everyone whines and complains like babies and in a few months the products that they were crying about are the best things since sliced bread and theres a new event and everyone whines and complains about the new products again. You'd think people would have learned their lesson by now.

Seriously...everyone's complaining and nobody's mentioning the amazing fact that Apple suddenly cares about graphics cards again.

Although no Firewire in theMacBook...that I can't get around. How are you supposed to do migration now? Wirelessly, like the air??

Video editor. What's your job? I don't use ANY computer screen for color correction in my work. None of them are as good as broadcast monitors.

I'm a graphic designer and photographer and my point is just because you think glossy is A-OK there are thousands who cannot stand it. What is so difficult about that to grasp?

If I heard right, the new Pro has eliminated the Firewire400 port (1394a).

This is going to be a HUGE problem for videographers using MacBook Pro's to download raw footage, as most videocams have 400, not 800 (1394b).

Frankly, I don't want to have to use an express card, and the problems that will ensue to be able to use my cam. Guess I'll stick with my older Macbook Pro 17 that HAS the 400 port (I also have external hard drives at 400 to contend with)

GRRRRRR!!!!

You can use 400 to 800 adapter cables though. The WD My Book Studio 2 supplies one as it dispensed with the FW400 ports in favour of eSATA. Of more concern is the the Macbook which has no firewire option and no expresscard slot, either. What is the point of iMovie now on that machine?

Very surprised there is no 17 inch model yet.

And all Glossy.

Very happy I got my 17" 2.6ghz last January now.

Nice new design and features however.

me too; got mine a couple weeks ago; opened it this past weekend and my Tibook coincidentally died the next day (sort of like Admiral McCain the day after he returned home from WW2).

looking at this underwheming update, i'm very relieved that i pulled the trigger when i did (got a great blowout deal - still loads better than the slower 15" machines). this is so obviously a transitional update (like the first aluminum G4 powerbooks) that other than for the aesthetics (which I'm not really partial to, anyway) of the new models, there's little to go ga-ga about.

waiting for the quad-core. actually, i'll just keep using the 2.6 and wait for the 16-core laptops. :)

This "problem" is exactly as "HUGE" as getting 9-to-6-pin FireWire cable. Which is available for like 5$, shipped to you from asia.

Will that allow you to daisy-chain mixed 400 and 800 peripherals while allowing the 800's to work at full speed???

Well, I am happy about some of the advancements, but I am not going to upgrade yet.

Things i don't like:

1- Glossy screen only - I really prefer matte, was not happy when Apple started offering Glossy, but at least they preferred Matte.... Now... Down with Matte? not only lame, but horrible.
2- No Blu-Ray Support - Apple is offering up pretty lame excuses at this point. I can't believe Apple is refusing to offer it and as an excuse they say Itunes has great HD content. Well... there are alot of people / professionals who would want something that can read BD discs on their MBP. Let alone some would like option to upgrade to the BD burner type also.
3- Trackpad - I would have to try it out, right now i am not so sure i would be open to it, what happens if you hit the pad with you palm? will it trigger a hit? or do you need to push it down and hear a click? will need to try it out, possibly it is a clunker idea.

Good things from new products:
1- Neat dual graphics chips
2- better power life
3- very cool new case, (though the the Glossy screen problems still aint liked)

For these reasons, I am passing. Have been waiting on the new ones, but I am going to hold off until Apple supports Blu-Ray, I can live with my MBP, no need to upgrade to new one. also ... hate glossy screen.

Love the idea on the new apple cinema display, but dont like glossy display on it though. love the other options and audio on it.

For photography in the field having a reasonably color accurate display comes in pretty handy. The "portable studio" angle is something Apple has emphasized for years, that's why they're called "pro" models.

All of that aside, the issue of dealing with glare when viewing anything on a glossy MB/MBP in the sunlight sucks.

So what?
These drives are readily available.

I hate to break it to you, but your currency considerably lost value against the dollar since the last time Apple updated their notebooks. No wonder that prices are higher.

I know this is a bad thing - but it's not Apple's fault.

Eh XE.com says $1299.99 = £744, not £950... why £200 more?

Massive Fail!

I use my firewire port in my macbook everyday for my audio production.

I dont like the 15" size as its not portable enough for gigging... where does that leave me when i need to upgrade..

Jeezuz Apple... did you forget that some professionals actually USE your laptops for other things than internet and photobooth !? WTF ?

Professionals also buy professional equipment. The MacBook Pro is equipped with Firewire.

The new 15" is only about 1 inch larger on each side, and only about 0.5 lbs. more in weight. If you can carry a MacBook, you can carry the 15" pro.

Although no Firewire in theMacBook...that I can't get around. How are you supposed to do migration now? Wirelessly, like the air??
There will be a way.
Just wait until the first manuals have been read.
I supposed it's going to involve GB ethernet.

Well macbook would be perfect, but here are main minuses:

1 no firewire port of any kind.
2 glossy screen only.
3 price (ok, I would say it $700 cheaper macbook pro; .... but without pro features? Since when firewire became pro feature????)

pluses:

1 weights less
2 smaller (in height and depth)
3 battery life is longer (just half an hour...)

And now i feel quite good over my macbook purchased in february again :)
No need to upgrade before revision 2 for me i think, nothing ground breaking!

Some cameras use USB now.

Disappointed

I've been waiting MONTHS for this update, and now I'm thinking of getting the previous generation (SR/Penryn) MacBook Pro :(

- Matte Screen
- Firewire 400
- No *(*&#^$ Chiclet keyboard
- Full DVI port (for my DVI ACD 24")
- Ridiculous price increases (I'm in Aussieland)
- Actual BUTTON for the trackpad, not the pad itself
- And, just to reinforce my point, MATTE SCREEN! Portable machines implies being able to use them OUTSIDE where it can by SUNNY and you may have to deal with GLARE!

Grrrrrrr

I agree with Jobs on Blue-ray. To me it is still very new and very expensive when it comes to the price of disks.

So were DVDs at one time and Apple had no problem adopting them at a similar point. Look, this is about Jobs trying to impose his preference for digital movies over another optical format.
