I am definitely not a fan of glossy screens.

However, the old screens are plastic, right? Maybe these glass ones will be better? We will have to wait and see.

yeah thats correct. we just have to see one to comment. the recent macbook pro with glossy display was pretty bad.
but then, i got a vaio bought 4 years ago and you know what? glare has never been an issue for me!

im sure they did do something for the glare issue! must have done....

anybody in the US seen one in an apple centre yet?

I hate to break it to you, but your currency considerably lost value against the dollar since the last time Apple updated their notebooks. No wonder that prices are higher.

I know this is a bad thing - but it's not Apple's fault.

It's now around 1.74 dollars. The new prices represent around 1.3-1.4.

I was actually going to buy one, tonight.

Now I'm not.

Nice going, Apple.

This is terrible...

MacBook:
- more expensive
- lacking FireWire <-- deal breaker!

MacBook Pro:
- no matte display option

The best news so far is the inclusion of LED backlighting in the MB. But I still suspect that the displays will be just as piss poor as those in the current MB.

What are you using your Quadro for and which do you have? Every benchmark that I have seen shows the 5600 operating similar to the 8800GT and the 4500 similar to the 7800GT which indicates to me that the drivers for the Quadros under OSX are not optimized. They are selling on the hardware benefits of steroscopic connection and 1.5GB of memory on the 5600.

Nothing like the performance benefits that the Quadro cards have under windows purely due to the drivers.

Memory benefits - 5600...had a 4500 in my old MP, which was quite disappointing. I have an 8800 in my PC, hard to tell the difference with the 5600 tbh, as the apps I run are different. Not really easy to compare the desktop cards anyway as Mac drivers lag behind. Doesn't mean I don't want to see a laptop solution...all the stories of Apple working closely with nVidia had my hopes up big time that they were pushing for a real quantum leap. But no :(

I like the way they advertise the glossy screens with a nice reflection.....

Kinda helps to know what you are getting :p

No update on the RAM capabilities. 4GB max still, Pretty pathetic, the 'big' update, and they can't even compete with competitors who already provide notebooks with 8GB of RAM.

4GB of DDR3 is pretty significant.

And I'm pretty sure Vista can only utilize 3.4GB of ram, so those "competitors" must just like having you pay extra?

I have. Back in 2003 I had a CRT that was cover in glass.

*SHOCK*

And I even knew color-perfection individuals who refused to go to LCD because it wasn't as accurate as their GLASS displays.

Nice try. CRT's had coatings/textures build into the screen to help reduce glare and other aberrations. The iMac has a normal, shiny piece of glass on it.

Montevina

Is the update including the Montevina chipset? if not why have they clocked back on the GHz?

To all the people whining about how much mac notebooks cost.

SHUT UP!!!!

If you cant afford to play then don't play!
stay home with your jenky windows laptop and save your money if you want to get a mac

If Apple listened to those like you, they wouldn't have having these giant profits and they couldn't afford to make products like this, so I suggest you take your own advise.

I miss the olden days when Apple was about the "Macs just work"

Now they have to satisfy people that are in just for the "cool" factor: "Its like, I am a Pro and I make $$$$(yeah right) and I don't like my Macbook like, missing the Super-duper-HDX-whatever port, OMG!"

Seriously, there will be less rants and whining in these pages.

why are all only talking about video and audio professionals about the matte display?
i own a mbp and i prefer a matte display because i can work anywhere with it.
glossy is a no go for me and i am not a professional just a normal student ;)

my current MacBook 2.2ghz with 4gig of ram was like £100 cheaper than the entry new macbook.

can't believe how shafted the uk is by apple, ridiculous, at these prices im not sure i will buy another apple laptop after this one. i was going to buy one for my parents in the states (when i go this december) as an xmas present but im not sure sure now.

This will probably get shouted down, but I think it's very difficult to make the case that MacBooks represent value for money compared to other laptops anymore. Just check what you can buy from Dell for LESS money.

So firewire 400 is dead and burried?
ANd only one Friewire port?

Guess they have a new set of MBP laying around with 2 Firewire 800 for the next update;)

Who the heck will pay triple to get an IPS panel, yet tolerate excess glare?

It's too bad that when Jobs' head swells like this it becomes impossible to pull it back out of his ass.

This would be hilarious if it wasn't unfortunately true. Apple's darkest times have come when Jobs becomes over confident and starts to reach.
