my current MacBook 2.2ghz with 4gig of ram was like £100 cheaper than the entry new macbook.

can't believe how shafted the uk is by apple, ridiculous, at these prices im not sure i will buy another apple laptop after this one. i was going to buy one for my parents in the states (when i go this december) as an xmas present but im not sure sure now.

Australia is in the same boat as the UK, man. It seems everywhere but the US is getting ripped off.

Isn't this ALOT cheaper now? Seems so. Me likey.

New monitors, charge your macbook

Hey they new monitors are better than a docking station:
PLug your notebook in the monitor and you are charging, and viewing!

http://www.apple.com/macbook/graphics.html

The new 24-inch Apple LED Cinema Display transforms your MacBook into a desktop computer in seconds. Plug in three simple connectors — Mini DisplayPort, USB, and MagSafe — and suddenly you have more room to work and play, plenty of space for peripherals, and an automatic charge for your MacBook. You don’t even need to take the power adapter out of your bag. And instantly, everything you see is bigger, brighter, and even more brilliant.

Interesting - you can now add SSD t othe 17

Plus 4gb as standard

I priced my machine up for insurance purposes last week

Its 17, 2.5, 7200 drive (only 200gb) and 4gb of ram - that came out at £2009

So for £1984 I get the same, but 320 instead of 200 drive - so pretty good to get more for less

Looks like indeed no FW on the MacBook

(this really sucks Apple, can not believe it)

I'll bet this was a decision by SJ and company to up sell all MacBook buyers who want to do any audio video to MacBook Pros

(We'll get another 700 plus bucks out of them)

If no FW on the MB, no MacBook for me, and I am not sure I can recommend a MB to anybody now who is going to do audio video.

Does the white model still have the firewire? I think I am going to buy this.

Q: Concern about the glossy screens. Are you going to offer another option?
A: Steve: We're going all glass -- we won't offer another version. Phil: You offset the reflection by the brightness, and consumers love it. One of the great things about a notebook is you can turn it however you want!

This is actually very disturbing, because this shows that Apple actually has not clue at how photographers use their computers... When you calibrate your screen, one of the very first step is to turn down the backlight *way* down to around 100cd. That's around 1/3 of the max value for most screens. Higher than that, and you can't achieve proper calibration, because backlight RGB is going to be way more shiny than CYMK paper...

So, if the answer to reflection on shiny screen, which is a major problem to photographers, is to turn up the already too bright screen even brighter, it just shows they have absolutely zero knowledge of the reality of that activity...

I know you can't achieve proper color calibration on a TN screen, but you can at least hope to come close enough after calibration that you can sort your photos and do some quick and dirty editing. With a screen trying to sunburn you at 400cd, even sorting will become a chore, because it will become difficult to spot the potential of a photo.

As for the general public, the problem with reflections is that they put a lot of strain on the eye. The answer to that is to poor even more backlight. A screen that is too bright is another eye strain. Just trading a nuisance for another... And all that for what? Absolutely nothing...

wow

Wow, I just saw these units on CNBC, and they were ALL GLARE in the room they were being displayed in. I'll have to hit the PA mac store later today and check them out.

Still sad, still was waiting to buy one!

Glass screen... laptop... anyone else think this is one of the dumbest design ideas in a while? I don't care how careful you are, laptops get dropped. The glass trackpad I can see and am actually looking forward to, but the screen? I hate it on the iMac but on a laptop its just a bad idea.

And no Blu-ray?! Come on Apple. At least offer it as an option. Blu-ray is pretty much standard on high-end PC laptops.

Other than those two things though, these look like really sweet new laptops.

LOL no offense but i think that every screen can break after you dropped it not only glass, lol,

I'm actually really liking the new look and most of the new specs, but as I mentioned before the no button is a bit issue for me.

Apple have:

- Raised prices.
- Reduced edu discounts (and I'm sure their aggressive edu discounts were a big part of the big uptake amongst students)
- Removed firewire from the MB
- Removed the option for a matte screen

Jobs and Ive have balls, you've got to give them that.

Also, I remember back to the original iMac. No floppy drive?!? WTF!?! And the iPod. A general WTF?!? Who'd pay that?!? A lot of bitching and moaning both times, and both times Jobs was totally, utterly and embarrassingly right.

I trust his judgement on these things more than I trust mine.

I don't, even slightly, trust the way he's eyeing up my wallet, though. Whore.

They also thought the cube was the next big thing in computing. That tandem usually either does amazing things or screws up horribly.

iMovie=not professional

yet most camcorders need firewire

but no firewire on MacBook means what for simple home movies?

Strange.

apple going to make TOOOOOns of money- apple store website just crashed...

[snip]

Well I hope so for their sake, cause their share price has tanked nearly $10 in the past hour (after peaking before the announcement). Seems there are more pro users out there that I estimated...:p

why didnt they use the right side to add some ports?
2usb are kinda creepy...
i need my iphone charger, a mouse, and a camera or external hd...
2usb will never do it
