Is the bump from 2.0 GHZ to 2.4 GHz worth it for the extra $300 on the Macbook?

Hell no.

Just ordered the $1249 Macbook from the Apple store (after measly $50 education discount). Should be here in 2-3 days. I was hoping for more of a price drop, but since I gave up my laptop after leaving my last job I've been tethered to an iMac in the corner for 4 months waiting for this notebook event. Gotta have something!

Got a top of the line 15" MBP, refurbished, for $1200 less than it was originally. Also, for $800 less than it was last week. I'm happy. I work on Final Cut Pro, wouldn't want tp work with a glass display.

Vista is NOT a 64 bit o/s. They have a 64 bit version, but no one is using it.....

No one is using it? I use Vista x64 on nearly all my home machines and it works fine. Granted, more people use the 32-bit version but to say "no one uses it" is a bit off. Hell, most of the PC gaming community (as small or large as it may be) prefers Vista 64 to any other OS.

That being said, I was really looking forward to these new Macbooks. Now? I don't know. :(

True, it does weigh 5.7 pounds, 1.2 more than the MacBook and 0.2 more than the MacBook Pro, but for me the cost saving more than makes up for it.
Well... I know what you mean. Personally, I'm willing to pay a healthy sum for less weight. But of course, I'm in the minority there... For people like you, the Dell must seem really tempting, from a price/value point of view (unless you very much care about aluminum cases, of course)

I love this new machine except for one thing that's a total deal-breaker for me.

No Firewire.

What are they thinking? Mac culture has ALWAYS been about Joe User being able to do content creation. That is no longer an option on the Macbook, their best-selling Mac.

This was a big, big mistake, IMO. It's going to confuse the message big-time.

Bollocks to crApple

I will get told to go buy a Dell, I'm sure, but I will say this anyway: Worst. Update. Ever.

No matter what marketing lingo Apple throws out there this was still a primarily cosmetic update. The only backside update to this is the graphics, and the FSB (with the switch to DDR3 accompanying it predictably).

What makes it even more ridiculous is that this still leaves them at the rear of the pack where consumer laptops are concerned spec-wise. I can get a dual core system with a faster clockspeed, more RAM, better graphics (discreet, not integrated), and more storage options for far less. I can do less than half of the cost of a MacBook if I use my company's buying discounts for employees. Tack on the extra $200 Apple is charging for an aluminum case and glass track pad and I can get a portable workstation for the same cost.

Don't even get me started on the MBP.

Oh, and if you want to connect your shiny new laptop to an external monitor BESIDES the new 24" they introduced, well hell, you'll have to shell out for the corresponding adapter as well! They could have been decent enough to at least include the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter with the machines.

Apple has been slowly sliding into what I can only describe as the Microsoft Trap. They're starting to believe their own hype and it's getting dangerous. They actually had the guts to unveil these machines with a massive price hike right in the middle of financial chaos.

So all I have to say is that until Apple has regained their common sense and the sense of function AND aesthetic that made their hardware so desirable I will be relying on my Dell that so many of you scorn, especially now that I'm successfully running Leopard on it.

Apple needs to pull their collective head out of their collective @$$.

So what?
These drives are readily available.

I hate to break it to you, but your currency considerably lost value against the dollar since the last time Apple updated their notebooks. No wonder that prices are higher.

I know this is a bad thing - but it's not Apple's fault.

Montevina is an Intel chipset/CPU platform, they went with an NVidia one with similar benefits, but better graphics.

come on fanboy! wake up! apple promised aggressive pricing. Where is aggressing pricing if it cost the same? OK, to be fair, I can say that they added a few features, but do you need them?
I make prognosis that old model macbooks/pro will go up in price than go down.

Can you please show us where they promised you anything.

new gestures

not sure if this was mentioned, but will the new gestures be simply a software thing, as in my current multitouch MBP can use them with just an update? From the way he was talking about it, it sounded like it might be specific to the new notebooks because of the big glass touchpads.

is apple recently slacking?
i mean iphone 3g is a step back regardig design...

mbp/mb the same
