can someone do a side by side comparison of the top end Macbook and the lower end Pro?

Simple: Get one of those new camcorders recording on solid state flash, HD or the like. DV is from yesterday (even if they are still sold).

Purists are STILL using mini-DV and mini-HDDV because the quality and resolution are MUCH higher than ACHD. For broadcast quality, DV is STILL the only way to fly. YouTube'rs don't really have an issue, but those of us with $5000++ videocams using mini-DV, and creating BROADCAST QUALITY video STILL need the firewire option.

HAHHHAHA, what a joke. What kind of a moron would buy one of those new macbooks? I mean apple fanboys aside.

And give me a break, the bottom end macbook right now is EXTREMELY out of date and super over price, so what do they do? They drop the price by 100 dollars? HAHAAHA, Apple is going down in flames. If it has the same specs but the new aluminum casing and LED screen, and only dropped 100 dollars, that would be PASSABLE, but to sell the exact same thing it would have to be around $600-700 to be worth it/competative. Even then it would be way more expensive than anything else offered.

Congrats Jobs, you are a moron.

They are just chucking the white macbooks while they can, They will be completely gone in a few months, no more PVC plastic. Don't even consider it a current macbook because its not.

And if you really think this is going to cause apple to go "down in flames" you sir, are the idiot.

So what happens to the other MacBook models like with SuperDrive? May just buy one at Best Buy now with 0% interest.

Oh Man! $1599! Thats £900! How much is the VAT/Tax in the US?

There is no VAT type tax as the federal government does not have the constitutional power to interfere with intrastate commerce and there is no tax on interstate transactions unless the part has an operation in your state. Each state levies its own sales tax and they usually in the 4-6% range. There are also local option sales taxes where the residents of a county can vote to raise the sales tax to pay for a specific program such as school construction and upkeep and public building construction.

Vista is NOT a 64 bit o/s. They have a 64 bit version, but no one is using it.....

Some people are, but you have to understand that the situation is very different from MacOSX...

With Vista, the *only* thing you get by switching to 64 bits is that you get the ability to use more than 3.5Gb as a whole and more than 2 Gb per application. And that's all, there is no performance gain at all, because there was no performance loss by staying 32 bits. If you don't have 4 Gb RAM or more, and if you don't use applications that can benefit from more than 2 Gb, you have no reason to switch to 64 bits. That's because the applications and the OS each exist in their own 2 Gb address space, so switching between the application (custom code) and the OS (API calls) has no extra cost.
As a result, there is little incentive to switch to Vista 64, very few people actually have 4 Gb of RAM. So, most people do not bother.

On MacOSX, a different architecture was chosen. The applications are not limited to 2 Gb in 32 bits, they can go all the way to 4 Gb. The tradeoff is that the address space is not shared. The OS gets the full 32 bits address space. And each application also gets it. So, whenever you have to switch between the OS and the application, and this happens quite often, you have to do a full context switch: save the stack, save the CPU state, switch, do whatever you had to do, restore the CPU state, restore the state. This is quite costly, even if the benefit is more potential RAM per application.
As a result, switching to 64 bits on MacOSX came with what seemed like a noticeable gain in performance - actually, this is seen from the wrong end, you're only recovering what you had lost due to the architecture choice.
So, for MacOSX users, there is a very real benefit from going 64 bits.

This explains the difference in the shift between the 32 and 64 bits version. On MacOSX, people made the move as fast as they could, because they could gain a lot in the process. On Windows, people only do it when they actually need it, because it's pointless otherwise. The Windows world will shift en masse when 4 Gb becomes the norm...

Well that was obviously a jab at the fact that they are going to see sales suffering by releasing overpriced products compared to what else is available, ALSO during economic crisis. They obviously aren't going to go out of business over some stupid mistakes like these, but I was ready to buy and they aren't getting my money now (i'm sure there are many of thousands of informed people such as myself that won't either).

You have got to be kidding me. $1600 for a 13 inch lap top with integrated grapics?
Come on...
The integrated graphics from NVIDIA is supposed to be pretty good.
Just wait until we see actual and unbiased performance figures, will you?

You're really going out on a limb there. I am going to wait with my judgment until I have seen sales figures in a few months. I wouldn't be exactly "shocked" if many people will put up with these prices. It's seems like a bit of a gamble. But Apple could get away with it. Just imagine these things having sold well over the christmas buying season...

Jobs would seem like a genius then.

Am I the only one that thinks the MacBook updates are awesome? It's beautiful and has everything I wanted, backlit keyboard and far better GPU!

Im really at a loss.

I really don't know if I want to buy the Macbook Pro. I have been waiting forever for the update but it is just really lacking. Maybe buy the asus. With Mac World around the corner I can see Apple ****ing me over with a more deserving feature on the MBP.

Damnit Apple...

The only people who care about the mat screens are a few pro photographers and graphic artists. Most people just want to use the notebooks are a media player for games, movies and the web. Glossy is best for that kind of use.

You forgot to add "In MY opinion" to that statement.

In MY opinion, you're wrong. Glossy screens are much more difficult to work with, just for general purpose work a matte screen is far more comfortable.

This was the beauty of the old regime; you could choose your screen. You choose super-shiny-contrasty, I'll choose smooth matte, just like the majority of flat panel displays.

Although no Firewire in theMacBook...that I can't get around. How are you supposed to do migration now? Wirelessly, like the air??

Its only a 2-6 hour drive to the local Apple store to have them do it for you. Unless they incorporate some kind of firmware for a USB version of TDM, the loss of firewire is a major blunder no matter how diminished its use is.

Massive Fail!

I use my firewire port in my macbook everyday for my audio production.

I dont like the 15" size as its not portable enough for gigging... where does that leave me when i need to upgrade..

Jeezuz Apple... did you forget that some professionals actually USE your laptops for other things than internet and photobooth !? WTF ?

I feel your pain. I use FireWire for getting video off the DV camcorder, recording from our cable box, networking to my Mini (it's noticably faster than 100mbps ethernet), and using my FW-only DVD burner. Now my upgrade price for a new Apple notebook that meets my needs has gone from $1099 yesterday to $1599 today, not counting the new bag I'd need to carry the larger machine around, the new adapter I'd need to connect all my FW gadgets to the FW800 port, the other new adapter I'd need to connect to my HDMI TV....

Actually, I suppose I could get the $999 base MB or a refurb - they'd still be an improvement over my 1.6 CD. But it's a bit disappointing to be left out of the aluminum future. What's really weird to me is that most consumer DV camcorders can only deliver video to a computer over FireWire, so the new Macbooks will be useless for iMovie users. Why would Apple release a new notebook that cannot run one of its flagship consumer apps?

The new macbook is perfect for me personally and I consider myself an average consumer (with a little more knowledge). Do I give a **** about the GPU? no. Do I personally care that FW is dropped? I would have loved to try it out but I have no real use for it as I dont have anything that needs it. I know they dropped it in the macbooks to try to migrate the people that need them to the pro lines.

Please dont give us this crap about every mac buyer being a drooling idiot who buys solely because its pretty. Its insulting.

is there a MINI DISPLAYPORT to HDMI adapter??????? link pls :C
when is next macbook pro update? january? >_>

Now that I have got my, "the old macbook is now more expensive than it was this morning," moans out of my system. I have to say the new macbook is beautiful.

It's not just value....

This will probably get shouted down, but I think it's very difficult to make the case that MacBooks represent value for money compared to other laptops anymore. Just check what you can buy from Dell for LESS money.

You're a newbie, apparently. Have you missed the point that Apple doesn't do "value", i.e. "cheap"? They also don't do bleeding edge graphics chips. It's the quality of the machine and the user experience. If value was the overriding need, you'd be driving a 15 year-old Geo Metro, right?

macworld this year will be focused on apple's new hdtv with built in apple tv. i'm surprised we saw anything to do with computers this year.

I actually think the new Macbook Pro sounds like a great machine.

I'm just still trying to figure out this bizarre no-Firewire-on-Macbooks decision.

Actually, I AM driving a 22 year old VW.
