That's funny, I'm looking at Canon's site right now, and all three of their consumer DV camcorders have FireWire
Of course they have, using DV.
My point is just this: You can get fancy new HD camcorders without FireWire.

And if I am not mistaken, the non-DV versions are lighter and "thinner".
Or, put differently, the thinnest and most lightweight camcorders don't use DV, so they don't need FireWire.

Speaking of "thin and lightweight"... that's just what "some" computer manufacturers seem to be all about, you know? ;)

Of course, not including FW on the MacBook somewhat reduce Apple's "plug & play" claims to absurdity. Cause I'm sure, some customers won't be aware of that when buying a new camcorders. But then, Apple seems to rather care about cost savings there. :(

I think you'll find all UK residents pay towards the NHS. It's not free.

How much? And what do you get? I pay in USA $126 a month for like 30-40% coverage of my total bills and no dental. Should I add that I am young male and non smoker and with age and children amount skyrockets...

Yep. I think the comment about "it's a laptop, you can position it any way you want!" is ludicrous, because what if you're in a room where you just can't avoid a reflection?

Well, sure, just keep moving around with it until you find the circumstances in which you can read or view the screen without too much interfering reflection, right?

So were DVDs at one time and Apple had no problem adopting them at a similar point. Look, this is about Jobs trying to impose his preference for digital movies over another optical format.
Because DVD was a big step up, what is the difference between blu ray and dvd on a freaking laptop, no wonder why blu-ray is strugglign to catch, consumers see it for what it is, a useless overpriced gimmick.

Yeah the prices do suck for macbooks, I agree. Actually, I kinda regret not taking advantage of the student bundle regarding the free ipod touch. I would have been able to sell that for 200...I figured these updates would have been worth it, since I was expecting the new versions to be at least the same price as the previous models, if not cheaper. Now I have to add 300 price increase to the 200 I would've been able to save, for a total of 500 that could've gone to my tuition and I could've had the macbook 2 months earlier, just for a chance to see the new updates. To put things into perspective, I have to convince myself that these updates are worth my waiting time and $500. (I am not buying the white macbook at this point, since I could've had it 200 cheaper and sooner)

Now to look at the other side of the picture. I'm not an enviro expert, but generally more environmentally friendly products cost more. Along with the technological advancements to the macbook, we also need to consider that Apple's approaches to more environmental solutions will add to the final cost of the product. I believe LED screens are more expensive but easier on the eyes and environment. I also believe the production of aluminum is not as toxic as the production of aluminum. So if it helps you to know a part of your money is going to save the environment indirectly, then enjoy your new aluminum, LED powered macbook.

Anyways, I'm guessing that Apple is also using the increased prices to offset the cost of switching to their new manufacturing process. In the long run though, I think it will be cheaper, but just the initial costs are being paid for by both the consumers, and Apple I'm sure.

I wouldn't be surprised if the macbook prices drop next year, or sooner, but for now, the early adopters are probably stuck with the high initial costs.

A useless overpriced gimmick... kind of like the new MB and MBP?

:(

"Fancy" does not equal "Quality". AVCHD format used by the HD and Flash Drive cameras do NOT have the same HD quality of DV... Yet.

And why should someone with a DV camera have to go out and spend hundreds of more dollars on a new videocam in order to use a feature that APPLE invented in the first place (Firewire) and pushes with iMovie? Apple should be Improving upon an exceptional invention... not deleting it from the MacBook models. This makes NO sense! First the MacBook Air, and now the MacBook models WITHOUT firewire. Sheesh!

If Apple listened to those like you, they wouldn't have having these giant profits and they couldn't afford to make products like this, so I suggest you take your own advise.
No if they listened to the likes of you, the company would be bankrupt.

I am seriously considering refurbished or new macbook/pro but older generation.

I dislike size and weight increase of new macbook pro too.

And just look at these glossy screens in an angle:

Or is it such "updated" wallpaper with cameramen?:)

oh jeez what a witty comment, not broad and over reaching at all right?

VHS to DVD was a HUGE difference. DVD to Bluray, yea its clearer and hold more, but I as well as other consumers are more than happy with DVD quality, so why go to bluray?

No if they listened to the likes of you, the company would be bankrupt.

You mean continue what they're doing while adding common sense opposed to shut out everyone who doesn't follow blindly. Apple makes money by selling computers and other consumer electronics, not by cult activity.

I will get told to go buy a Dell, I'm sure, but I will say this anyway: Worst. Update. Ever.

No matter what marketing lingo Apple throws out there this was still a primarily cosmetic update. The only backside update to this is the graphics, and the FSB (with the switch to DDR3 accompanying it predictably).

What makes it even more ridiculous is that this still leaves them at the rear of the pack where consumer laptops are concerned spec-wise. I can get a dual core system with a faster clockspeed, more RAM, better graphics (discreet, not integrated), and more storage options for far less. I can do less than half of the cost of a MacBook if I use my company's buying discounts for employees. Tack on the extra $200 Apple is charging for an aluminum case and glass track pad and I can get a portable workstation for the same cost.

Don't even get me started on the MBP.

Oh, and if you want to connect your shiny new laptop to an external monitor BESIDES the new 24" they introduced, well hell, you'll have to shell out for the corresponding adapter as well! They could have been decent enough to at least include the Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter with the machines.

Apple has been slowly sliding into what I can only describe as the Microsoft Trap. They're starting to believe their own hype and it's getting dangerous. They actually had the guts to unveil these machines with a massive price hike right in the middle of financial chaos.

So all I have to say is that until Apple has regained their common sense and the sense of function AND aesthetic that made their hardware so desirable I will be relying on my Dell that so many of you scorn, especially now that I'm successfully running Leopard on it.

Apple needs to pull their collective head out of their collective @$$.
Will you just shut up, they actually dropped the price, if consumers didn't want their products, they wouldn't be paying for it, it shows they are confident in their business, if they listened to the craps you guys spew their business would be dead.

told ya :D
i have a last gen mbp new... starting bid 2,2k... its value increase with time ^^

so Adjei i guess u buy anything legally congratz if so ur comment is acceptable if not u are just a hypocrite

It comes out of general taxation, but probably not as much as yours. As for what we get, well most things that go wrong are fixed! However newer breakthrough drugs always seem to be an issue, so some folks end up paying for them. Only issue we have is waiting times, though if it's a serious issue then you'll get seen quicker.

We don't get free dental, just a subsidised version. Which probably is much cheaper than yours!. Only issue with dental is some areas don't have many NHS dentists, so people have to go privately. That's a huge arse rape. Still i'm in a big city, so I have no problems. I've got to have a check up soon. That's around £25, which isn't too bad imo.

They are just chucking the white macbooks while they can, They will be completely gone in a few months, no more PVC plastic. Don't even consider it a current macbook because its not.

And if you really think this is going to cause apple to go "down in flames" you sir, are the idiot.
Don't waste your time on these dudes. :D

Will the hard drive in these new Macbooks be as easy to replace as the old ones do you think?

Only reason I'm asking as Apple want £60 for a 250gb upgrade or I could get a 320gb on eBuyer for £50 and fit it myself.
