Well that was obviously a jab at the fact that they are going to see sales suffering by releasing overpriced products compared to what else is available, ALSO during economic crisis. They obviously aren't going to go out of business over some stupid mistakes like these, but I was ready to buy and they aren't getting my money now (i'm sure there are many of thousands of informed people such as myself that won't either).
No their sales will actually rise like they've been doing for awhile now.

Anyway, back to Apple...

I actually quite like the new Macbooks. Annoyed about the lack of firewire and the bigger price though. My current MB will do for a me, it's not lacking at present. Though one thing was answered tonight, the netbook, or lack or it.

Seems an EeePC or Acer maybe heading my way.

Upgrading RAM is easy. Don't order from Apple. Get it from a 3rd party and install yourself. Takes about a minute.

Yes, but the question was, is this still true with the NEW models, what with them being filed from a solid block of alu, or whatever it was ;)

When Steve introduced new ilife last year I knew that firewire will be not his preference for cameras- he advertised philips AVCHD.

Why wouldn't it be the same LED display used in the Air?
Cause Apple likes to make some cost savings on lesser models.
Even dropping the FireWire can probably be attributed to cost savings (and product differentiation of course).

Of course they have, using DV.
My point is just this: You can get fancy new HD camcorders without FireWire.

And if I am not mistaken, the non-DV versions are lighter and "thinner".
Or, put differently, the thinnest and most lightweight camcorders don't use DV, so they don't need FireWire.

And, despite being higher resolution, they use lower bitrates to record, resulting in ugly artifacts. I'd bet I can run my DV video through a bicubic resize to HD resolution and get better quality than what comes from these "fancy new HD camcorders". Besides, buying a "fancy new HD camcorder" at $600 on top of the $1300 laptop is even more expensive than just buying the $1600 laptop that I don't really need. It wouldn't even solve the problem of the missing FW port, because I have other stuff, some of which (the cable box, for instance) does not exist in USB form.

Of course, a Dell Inspiron 13 has Firewire (4-pin port, but that's fine for my uses, and I already have appropriate cables), and an equivalent config to the $1300 Macbook is $820. That's enough savings to buy a retail copy of Leopard and iLife, and even buy pizza and a six-pack for a hacker buddy so I don't have to fool with the install. I could even splurge for Aperture and Logic Express in the bargain. Maybe that should be my plan - the Apple software is still awesome, it's the hardware that's the disappointment here.

Pity the new cinema display doesn't allow you to operate the MB/A/P closed. Most other docking solutions I've used/seen allow this basic concept.

Also...

# Contrast ratio (typical): 1000:1
# Response time (typical): 14 ms

Specs seem a little cheap for the price

and here more clearly:

Apple also described their formula for introducing "state of the art new products at prices their competitors can't match". They explain that these new products introduce new "technologies and features" (like the iPhone), justifying their initially higher prices. Over time, they expect to take advantage of scale and engineering to drive prices down.

Right and they drop the price of the macbook, it just wasn't enough for your crybabies and in the article they said over time, which means into the near future.

oh jeez what a witty comment, not broad and over reaching at all right?

VHS to DVD was a HUGE difference. DVD to Bluray, yea its clearer and hold more, but I as well as other consumers are more than happy with DVD quality, so why go to bluray?

The point is that the first 10 minutes of the presentation today focused on the aluminum block, thats like focusing on a car frame to sell a car, no one cares, so i think all this aluminum business is an overpriced gimmick. Was the durability of MB and MBPs a problem before to necessitate this much attention? You see, it's a gimmick. I'm not saying Blu-Ray is a big advance over DVD, its not, but it is becoming more and more standard so why wouldn't you include it in your new notebooks? Instead, they make an aluminum chassis and sell it as something you need or some great advance in the manufacturing process? I don't buy it. The only way to sell the new manufacturing process is to actually make the products cheaper, which they didn't do, so again, its a gimmick.

I think you'll find all UK residents pay towards the NHS. It's not free.

I think you'll find that the Barack Mugabe zealots state-side think "free national healthcare" is financed by bottling and selling unicorn farts and essence of rainbow.

Apple used to be innovative and ahead in technology.

Apples not stupid and knows optical is on its way out. Why adopt a medium when you know its going to die out in the next 5+ years anyway. You know what happens when they eventually have to drop that format? Do a search on this site for Firewire 400;)

Adopting bluray wouldnt be innovation or ahead of any technology, merely adopting the current "new standard" that hasnt managed to establish itself well at all so far.

Ask people about cracking/chipping in plastic macbooks.

Ask them about dents and dings in aluminum ones.

The new process is a great feat in my mind, though its true no average joe is going to give a damn, up until they feel how well built the thing is. Engadget says it feels like its built like a tank (paraphrasing here).

And the transition to metal over plastic would be huge in the eyes of your average shopper

it has nothin to do with knowing....
may i put it blunt?
the majority of apple customers are retards and wanna show off nothing else

and guys stop flaming if someone complains about the prices... its just a normal critism
its not that we would doubt ur religion -_-
If you are so concerned about price, Apple ain't for you, go get soemthing else. Apple can price their products as much as the market bear, it's like complaining that BMW or Benzes are expensive when there are Honda's and Toyota's out there you can buy.

A useless overpriced gimmick... kind of like the new MB and MBP?
If that's what you think so be it, if Blu-ray was so big that everyone wants one, why is one of their main backers, Samsung saying it will be dead in 5 years.

There is no VAT type tax .

True. There is no Federal tax on sale of computer equipment.

as the federal government does not have the constitutional power to interfere with intrastate commerce

False.

Article I, Section 8, Clause 1,3:

“ The Congress shall have power . . . To regulate commerce with foreign nations, and among the several states, and with the Indian tribes; ”

The Federal government does in fact place "excise taxes" on select items including gasoline, communication services (your phone bill), and quite a few other items.
