This is very true. Thank to the jerks for taking away our discount.. you know the people who actually need it.

That's just it, though. No one NEEDS Leopard.

The whole point of student discounts are so that students can get school-work done. That's why laptops and things like Final Cut Studio can be gotten cheaper, but iPods and AppleTVs generally can't (except for specific deals).

To me, Leopard is more like an iPod. Very cool, yes, but not required for schoolwork. Tiger can do everything you need for school. If you're buying Leopard, it's for your own reasons, not for school. I'm amazed it has any student discount at all.

Copyright infringement is not theft.

Quit associating the two.
Torrenting software is taking something and getting value from it without paying for it, and denies the copyright holder the income from the use of it. That's close enough to theft for me and I fail to see how it is any different from shoplifting a packaged DVD.

Goodbye student discount... $116. Wow. What is going on with Apple and the EDU discounts?

Too many education orders... That is what.

Being that Schools have a higher percentage of Mac Users then the rest of the world means there is there is more strain on the Student Discount program. Where even Last Year they could get away at selling the product at smaller profit. But with a larger portion of the sales on Student Discount they need to raise the price to keep the margins up. Apple is a For Profit Company and they are publicly traded so they kinda need to keep their margins up. Also it is rather easy to get the education discount, I myself am working part time on my MBA so I qualify because I am a registered student at an accredited college.

So you are willing to steal something because it costs more than you wanted to pay?

Infringe the copyright of, not steal - and people have been doing that for quite some time. Attempting to call them out and make it some sort of moral issue isn't going to work, especially over the intertubes.

Do you remember the Good Old Days....

... When these forums were filled with real Mac fans that didn't whine and cry and bitch and moan whenever Apple raised the price of something, or cut the price, or brought out an updated piece of hardware?

I'm sorry but if this "halo" effect of the iPod/iPhone was to try and bring more market share to Apple with switchers, I think at this point I'd rather that the switchers stayed on their crappy PCs and bitched and moaned about M$ instead of polluting our forums with their entitlement issues.

If you are complaining about the EDU price going up, get over it already. You ASSUMED the price was going to stay the same as Tiger. Knock that off and get over it. What did your mommy say about assuming? Why don't you ask your mommy to front you the extra cash so that you can be the first to have Leopard???

Boy that sounds familiar doesn't it? All these whine@sses want to get Leopard right away, yet anyone who has been around the block for a decade or two knows to stay away from 10.5 until 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 makes its way to the Software Update.

And what is with everyone buying the family packs on here? Last I knew Apple wasn't going the M$ route and not allowing you to use the disc on multiple Macs. I plan on using my disc, come 10.5.2, to upgrade 3 of my Macs.

Except I am in my office at UNC-chapel hill as we speak, using the campus network. (And I see $116).

I wonder if it will correct itself.

someone should call apple to ask why some are getting $69 and others $116.

Well, Apple has offered a 79$ (??) upgrade in the past. Your amazed it has any discount at all? Steve Jobs is such a benevolent leader...

Ive already explained my position. You can look at it however you choose. $69 is 100% of $69. It is 60% of $116, and $47 is 40% of $116. So in the grand scheme of things you are paying 40% more than you would have.

I cannot be bothered to figure out what side of this debate you are on, or whether or not you are at/have left/have never been to university. And whilst I realize that art subjects are know for letting you "look at it however you choose", but I sure hope nobody ever spent close to $50,000/yr on your book smarts...

Does Apple ever give a discount on a new OS for a recently purchased computer? I had to get a new laptop a month ago. Will I have to pay full price?

Check here to see if you are eligible http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

Customers who purchase a qualifying new Macintosh computer on or after October 1, 2007 that does have not Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard included can upgrade to Leopard.

Does anyone know if the 6pm 26th October date will also be the time when I can order a Macbook Pro with leopard pre installed from the online store?

I've been waiting for nearly a month for leopard's release to be announced so I can finally switch over.

Whining about whining is the best whine there is.

Heh. That is still violating the software license, no different than torrenting a copy.

Apple has a new OS coming out?

First I heard of it.

Do you HAVE to get the family pack to install on more than 1 machine? When I bought Tiger I was able to install on my tower and iBook (which I thought was very cool of apple to not hassle us about).

Do you think that would still work?

History would suggest that you will probably be able to install on multiple machines without being treated like a criminal, because Apple knows you will eventually pay for the additional licenses in guilt and karma.
It was good of my neighbours to not hassle me for swiping their lawn ornaments too, but then again, I never told them it was me! :)

You underestimate the development costs of incorporating correct English spelling, like "colour" instead of "color" :p

You could probably even make a case for that, except that there's people like me willing to correct it for free, albeit with a mildly condescending tone. :D

There are two reasons that they keep reducing the student discount:
1. Non-students routinely take advantage of the discount.
2. Apple's marketshare among students has been rising rapidly

You forgot 3: based on some of the spelling and grammar in this and other forums, Apple decided that students aren't working hard enough for their discounts.
And 4. They had to raise the student cost to cover their losses from people who will just steal it.

leopard 300+ new features
see them all here http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html

I remember the 300 new features in Jaguar, or was it Panther. They had such pretty icons. Of course, most of those features I never see or use, or they run without me knowing about them, but man, they had nice icons.

Glad to see that Leopard is also 129 for Canadians now. :)

The Canadian price actually reflects the current value of the dollar? Woot! If they would just do that for the hardware, I might be able to get a new mac at a fair price without having to smuggle it across the Niagara river

Yeah, I was wondering the same exact thing.

awesome! just awesome, after getting a ps3 im not use to having things come out when they should.....oh wait - no it didnt

Exactly. They give you "coupon" when you buy stuff from them but you can never use them to get discount!

Well, Apple has offered a 79$ (??) upgrade in the past. Your amazed it has any discount at all?

Yeah, that always surprised me.

Do you think the AppleTV should have a student discount? Seems like a very optional item to me. I've always seen the OS upgrades the same way. The one that came with the computer works perfectly well, if you want a new one it's because you want it, not because you need it.

Just wow on the edu price. It is a safe bet that pirating of Leopard are going to sky rocket.

Apple is taking adatage of students because they know students are most likely to want to be on the cutting edge so they are going after the easy money from people who can not afford it. It looks like apple is trying to phase out the edu pricing slowly. Well Apple looks like M$ is going to go back to kicking you rear in the edu world.

please microsoft kicking apples but in the edu world? That's rich..........

hahaha a student discounted office app for a higher price than a regularly priced OS hahahaha

got a question
it says:

Ships: Delivers on October 26th

with Free shipping.

Does it mean I'll get it ON October 26th? (using the Free Shipping option)
if so, what's with the 1 overnight shipping or 2 day shipping.....

OP is correct

One will land you in prison, the other with a lawsuit. I'm not saying copyright infringement is OK, but please don't buy into the copyright lobbyist nonsense that it is "stealing", like that offensive movie piracy ad that is on all of my DVDs.
