One will land you in prison, the other with a lawsuit. I'm not saying copyright infringement is OK, but please don't buy into the copyright lobbyist nonsense that it is "stealing", like that offensive movie piracy ad that is on all of my DVDs.
It's got nothing to do with buying into copyright lobbyist nonsense and everything to do with my own personal beliefs. I am a professional software developer who has lost revenue to illegally downloaded software - that's stealing to me...

Intellectual property

Why do you believe theft is confined to act of stealing a physical object or by what the punishment is? Theft is an action. Yes, piracy is a ridiculous term to apply but theft is appropriate.

Study the history of intellectual property in the United States. Copyright laws and patent laws exist as a compromise and were hotly debated by the founders.

The government obviously agrees with my definition and not yours, otherwise copyright infringement would carry the same penalty as theft of tangible property.

I think people should pay for software. I stopped pirating software when I became an adult and a software engineer and realized the hypocrisy of pirating other people's stuff but expecting them to pay for mine. But how does it make you feel to know that when the RIAA and other groups see sentiment like yours from consumers they cackle with glee and say "We've roped in another sucker"?

This thread gets better by the second. Poor suffering film student. Life is so harsh! C'mon get some perspective on things or you'll never make great films. Any "anguish" on your part over this "outrage" is a slap in the face to anyone experiencing actual suffering. It's an entire OS upgrade. They cost $. $129 is cheap. How much did FCS2 cost you? Aftereffects? Adobe creative suite? $129 for an OS upgrade is a walk in the park.

PS you might wanna wait a couple weeks or so and see how the pro apps work on it.

I wish I had FCS2, After Effects, and Adobe Creative Suite.

If they wouldn't have bought it otherwise, it isn't, and that is why the two are distinct legally.

Seriously, you don't want it going the other way. You could get nailed for infringement for loaning someone a book, or reading it out loud in public.

Hello?
It was $69 for Tiger and now $116 for Leopard means Apple IS getting greedier:confused::confused::confused:!

Um Apple is a FOR PROFIT COMPANY their main business is to make money. They will sell their products at a price where they can make the most money out of. Economics 101 Supply and Demand. There is a golden price mark were you will maximize profits. If you make the price to high then people won't upgrade thus loosing profit. Too Low a lot of people will buy the product but they could have made more money from it. So there is a price point where you can maximize profit.

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard and its 300-plus new features and innovations are coming Oct. 26, 2007.

If you buy a qualifying Mac between October 1, 2007 and December 29, 2007, and it does not include Mac OS X Leopard, you’re eligible to get Leopard after it’s released for just $9.95 plus tax.

Still waiting, why deal with hastle of installing Leopard and paying $9.95 upgrade fee.

Where did you see this, and is it limited to the US?

because making a copy (or downloading a copy) does not remove the original. You have not physically taken a CD from someone. Until intellectual property and copyright law change, the two (physical theft and copyright infringement) are legally distinct, whatever you feel about that morally.

However, given your argument I can only assume you are trolling or an RIAA/MPAA shill.

Thankfully this semester at law school hasn't turned me into the type of person you are. You responded to clear colloquial invocations of of a term by citing restrictive legal definitions. If you don't understand the flaw in that, I suggest you stop reading Lessig and read a book on argumentation.

Your RIAA shill,
IBjr

So am I...

It's got nothing to do with buying into copyright lobbyist nonsense and everything to do with my own personal beliefs. I am a professional software developer who has lost revenue to illegally downloaded software - that's stealing to me...

So am I, and so have I, but that doesn't change my opinion on the difference between theft of physical property and duplication of intellectual property. One is illegal because it is wrong, and one is illegal because we deem it beneficial to be.

I'm more concerned with families being slapped with quarter million dollar judgments than I am with lost revenue from people that probably weren't going to buy my software anyway.

that would have nothing to do with the Apple's price...

It would be just about what type of person you are. Seriously.

Ain't that the truth? I have some college friends that paid for tiger at the lower edu price point, but there is no way they will be paying for leopard at that price. I think the amount of leechers on the torrent sites is going to skyrocket on release day.

Disappointed

I'm one of those disappointed with the education price.
For one, it's an obvious cut in the education discount only.
Secondly, being a senior in college, I honestly don't even have $129 or $116, much less to spend on an upgrade.

This sucks too, because I was looking forward to Leopard a LOT. I hope :apple: realizes that they lost quite a few education customers on this one.
:(

EDU Discount

Hey, I'm sure this questions has been asked before but can I get teh discount at the apple store? I think I can, with my student ID? Right...

As a UK student, des this mean that I can order a macbok with Tiger tonight, get the free /(partly free) iPod, and then upgrade for £5.95 to Leopard on 26th October????

There are two types of people: Those who make money by exploiting the ignorance of others, and those who save money by exploiting the ignorance of those who exploit the ignorance of others.

I love that on Apples homepage for Leopard they show all MacBooks displaying Leopard. I guess that answers everyone's questions about if Macbooks will handle everything Leopard has to offer ;)

I'm much more excited over this release than I was for Tiger. However, I will try to be patient and wait a few months before I jump in. Maybe even to get it free if new hardware comes out in January. But it's so hard to be disciplined and wait, since it looks so nice.

greed?

Um Apple is a FOR PROFIT COMPANY their main business is to make money. They will sell their products at a price where they can make the most money out of. Economics 101 Supply and Demand. Too Low a lot of people will buy the product but they could have made more money from it. So there is a price point where you can maximize profit.

Also, the R&D expenditures for Leopard must have been extreme. Why is a price increase automatically "greed"? OS X isn't a profit leader for Apple in the first place - why should they have to lose money on it just to keep some college kids happy?

Great new, even though I'm a bit bummed out about the edu discount thing.
It's not a definite dealbreaker for me, but it made me think about if its really worth it at this point.
The features i really need ASAP are:
- stable Safari 3, the beta keeps crashing on me
- the new Finder, basically because the old one sucks
- Time-machine because I like the idea of the seamless backup soloution, and my current one is non-existent

but the freakin aqua scrollbars are still in the screenshots and they look ugly as hell...you would think a company like apple wouldn't leave a thing like that considering all the other UI enhancements.

one question, Im not using iChat at this time but will i be able to use all the new features such as desktop sharing with an free AIM account, or do i have to get .mac?

If I buy Leopard, can I use ilife08 that I came with the macbook pre-installed with tiger? With the computer it came 2 cds containing tiger but I don't know if ilife can be installed without installing the os.

not to add fuel to the fire, but what surprises me is that the government and business discount is greater than the education discount! $107 vs $116 vs $129!
Not huge in either case, but I would expect parity at least!
