I'm surprised how all my fellow students keep whining about a price increase when it's really a discount decrease. Though the result might be similar, those are two pretty different things. I'm puzzled though by the different discounts for different schools. The general edu-discount here in Korea would put me at $147, which is more than I had expected, but still far from unreasonable.

I do not need Leopard, but I want it and I believe that one should support good software and save it in on the crappy ones(*cough* such as Windows). I was never very interested in buying software on my old PC, but after switching, I've found software that I actually want to pay for to keep the good stuff coming.

Now if only I could find a way to actually get the full student discount...:D

Frontrow is not a feature in Tiger

Some are absolutely not features at all. I mean, why does the fact that Leopard includes FrontRow count as a feature, considering FrontRow was in Tiger?? Likewise for photobooth, etc.

FrontRow is not properly a feature in Tiger. It isn't included with Macs that don't have remotes... I.E., Power Macs/Mac Pros. Same with Photobooth - no built in iSight, no Photobooth.

Dude, comparing what college students live on and someone who has a full time job and family really doesn't work.

I was a poor college student and know what they are talking about. A few dollars here or there really means whether you are going to eat or not. Having a full time job as well now and a family is quite different. My wife are now able to actually save money because we MAKE it. I used to only get money from my parents. NOT the same thing.

It is a valid comparison since its all about cash flow. Most of us with jobs, families, mortgages, and all kinds of bills already went to college. We know what you students are going through since we went through the same thing. That is why we think its so lame when students whine about spending an extra $40 for Leopard. Sell that free iPod Steve gave you.

For all you students, enjoy it while you're there. It doesn't get any better than what you have right now.

Education discount is lame now. I remember when it was 79 dollars, now it's 116. Only 13 off the actual price...

Want a tissue? The rest of us have to pay full price and we cannot ask our mommies and daddies for the cash to buy it either because we live on our own in the real world.

I guess price discrimination has benefitted Apple to some extend up until now, since more students would buy it rather than pirate it. Guess the market analysts at Apple has now changed their mind and think a low student discount is beneficial to the company - the student discount was rather extreme up until now.

bittorrent is still popular in colleges
or how about I just borrow your DVD?

Boot Camp ASSISTANT will stop working; you will still be able to boot into your exisiting partitions, just not be able to create/modify new ones.

no!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got linux on a partition and the only way i know how to get it off without hurting osx is reformat the partition with disk utility using the install disc earase and format as microsoft data then using bootcamp assistant to re-merge the partitions is there another way? or do I just have to wait untill I install leopard and do that?

One will land you in prison, the other with a lawsuit. I'm not saying copyright infringement is OK, but please don't buy into the copyright lobbyist nonsense that it is "stealing", like that offensive movie piracy ad that is on all of my DVDs.

Why do you believe theft is confined to act of stealing a physical object or by what the punishment is? Theft is an action. Yes, piracy is a ridiculous term to apply but theft is appropriate.

Hello?
It was $69 for Tiger and now $116 for Leopard means Apple IS getting greedier:confused::confused::confused:!

Wow, I too am put off by the $116 price... For years, I used to pirate software, particularly Windows XP because it was so freaking over priced when I would go to build a system... When I converted to Mac this year, I told myself that I would not do this anymore, esp. because the student version of OS X (I am a student) was very well priced. But that price tag just about means the difference between pirating and staying with Tiger. And I am really really looking forward to Leopard...

Apple, why do ye torment me so!?!?!

Umm.
A. You don't have to upgrade to Leopard. You are not being forced to do so. 10.4 will work great for a long time, even with new software.

B. You have alternatives. You can purchase XP or Vista, or Install Linux on it.

C. $116 is really still a good price of an OS nowadays. Windows XP Home addition Boxed cost more. And that is a 6 year old OS that is basically a version behind.... Assuming that you are a full time college student. Basically you can make up the cost by not going out for dinner or lunch for a week or two.

You are acting like Upgrading to the next version of OS X is a necessary. That failure to do so will cause major problems in your life... It won't sorry.

No one NEEDS Leopard

You are likely referring to undergrads. Don't equate them with grad students (unless it is business school).

Apple had set a trend with their edu OS pricing, a significant bump in pricing won't be well received. Complaining about the complaining just makes more of the first type of complaining, intermixed with complaining of a third type.

No one is making you cash-advantaged types read this thread, either.

Seriously - the most irritating thing here is the confusion of wants with needs. Even grad students don't *need* Leopard. The core APIs are pretty settled now, and new software will run on Tiger for a very long time.

There is still an education discount, albeit a smaller one, for an operating system that is exponentially improved over any previous update. You are getting a disproportionate increase in value for that extra $40.

because making a copy (or downloading a copy) does not remove the original. You have not physically taken a CD from someone. Until intellectual property and copyright law change, the two (physical theft and copyright infringement) are legally distinct, whatever you feel about that morally.

However, given your argument I can only assume you are trolling or an RIAA/MPAA shill.

Whatever. I bought the EDU version anyways. I was somewhat surprised as Jaguar, Panther and Tiger were all $69. That was aggressive pricing especially for an operating system. Considering it's nowhere near the retail, upgrade price of a Vista, it's still a good buy.

Major windows update comes once a couple of years.
Mac is like within 2 years. Do the math.

Yay for being Active Duty Military. Federal Employee discount is $107!

Yay finally better discount that people who go to college :D

Just wow on the edu price. It is a safe bet that pirating of Leopard are going to sky rocket.
Ain't that the truth? I have some college friends that paid for tiger at the lower edu price point, but there is no way they will be paying for leopard at that price. I think the amount of leechers on the torrent sites is going to skyrocket on release day.

Hmm the student discount isn't as much as I had hoped it would be.

I might just wait it out and buy an ADC membership and wait a month, much better value for me.

Do you get server addition with acd?

I worked all summer and made $1500 which I spent on the MBP since my ****ing iBook died.

Now you'll say "should have bought a macbook, you don't need pro". Well I need the dedicated graphics card for final cut since I'm a film student.

This thread gets better by the second. Poor suffering film student. Life is so harsh! C'mon get some perspective on things or you'll never make great films. Any "anguish" on your part over this "outrage" is a slap in the face to anyone experiencing actual suffering. It's an entire OS upgrade. They cost $. $129 is cheap. How much did FCS2 cost you? Aftereffects? Adobe creative suite? $129 for an OS upgrade is a walk in the park.

PS you might wanna wait a couple weeks or so and see how the pro apps work on it.

You are correct, I don't (and most don't) need it. I'm still more than a bit irked over it though. Since I have to work about 12 hours a day and the increase is 1/2 a days income, I have about 5 more hours to be mad! :)

Actually, less than 1% of MR readers -need- it, but that wouldn't have stopped pages and pages of whining if they missed the Oct. 26th release date.

And, seriously, if people just stopped replying directly to whine posts, they would dry up.

got a question
it says:

Ships: Delivers on October 26th

with Free shipping.

Does it mean I'll get it ON October 26th? (using the Free Shipping option)
if so, what's with the 1 overnight shipping or 2 day shipping.....
