If I buy Leopard, can I use ilife08 that I came with the macbook pre-installed with tiger? With the computer it came 2 cds containing tiger but I don't know if ilife can be installed without installing the os.

iLife can be installed without install tiger just have to select the correct option. Something like install bundled software.

If they wouldn't have bought it otherwise, it isn't, and that is why the two are distinct legally.

Seriously, you don't want it going the other way. You could get nailed for infringement for loaning someone a book, or reading it out loud in public.

I don't believe he was suggesting that we prosecute copyright infringement as theft. I do applaud you for the slippery slope, are you trying to prove my point? You should argue, not bully.

Dude, comparing what college students live on and someone who has a full time job and family really doesn't work.

I was a poor college student and know what they are talking about. A few dollars here or there really means whether you are going to eat or not. Having a full time job as well now and a family is quite different. My wife are now able to actually save money because we MAKE it. I used to only get money from my parents. NOT the same thing.

I was a full time student. I delivered pizza to pay for stuff like this. I got my BA and paid off my student loans myself. It was a bitch. Life is a struggle.

Where the "Resolution Independence" Go????

When you click to look at all of the '300 New Features', resolution independence isn't one of them. It certainly isn't listed in the Graphics section. And I read over the whole list twice and didn't see it.

Higher education institutions each have TWO Apple Stores: one for individual purchases, and one for institutional purchases.

At the Apple Store for University of Wisconsin-Madison, Leopard is $69 at the institutional store (e.g., where university departments purchase from), and $116 at the individual store (e.g., where faculty, staff, and students purchase from).

Previously, Mac OS X has been $69 across the board.

Leopard Server also went up greatly for individual purchase. The 10-client went from $249 to $449 ($499 retail), and unlimited client from $499 to $899 ($999 retail). For institutional purchase, the prices of $249 and $499 respectively remain the same for Leopard Server.

In theory, would two users of 10.5 be able to share a simultaneous GarageBand jam session via an internet connection and screen sharing?

Interesting. I wonder if there is a list of prices for institutions floating around out there, or if the Cornell price was just the dept. price.

The extra $40 is a Lot

Being a student, I know that the extra $40 is a lot. I worked part time for almost a year just so that I can afford to buy a MBP- and I was proudly able to do so.

I worked a lot more to purchase a used car, and I am still working my butt off to pay for car insurance and gas- and other bills.

All my parents pay for are the meals- $100 a month. Thankfully I was able to get a scholarship to pay for tuition and rent.

So yes, $40 is a little too much when I am living on a shoestring budget....

With the $40 I can fill up my car to last me for two weeks...

I do agree that there are students who are living totally off their parents' money and they may not have a justifiable reason to whine, but for students who are earning on their own- I believe they do have a reason to whine.

I'm sorry, but I don't really buy this. If you can afford the $70 to buy Tiger, you can afford the additional $40 to buy Leopard. I went through undergrad working full time while a full time student to afford the things that I needed/wanted. It worked for me.

And, while I don't know anyone else on the forums, there are more than a few college students that don't blink at $40 bar tabs, yet would complain at something like this...

Dude, don't sweat it. These students and whoever else CAN afford the extra $40.00 it just makes interesting conversation today. People bought Vista at $400 without even blinking so for $129 it's no biggie. There's really no reason to complain.

My only issue is the blue scroll bars didn't go away. :(

not to add fuel to the fire, but what surprises me is that the government and business discount is greater than the education discount! $107 vs $116 vs $129!
Not huge in either case, but I would expect parity at least!

well that's odd. perhaps this $116 price is a mistake. perhaps someone could call to verify (i can't i'm not in your country).

Ordered mine! I like the message 'DELIVERED ON OCT 26th' - not shipped on the 26th!

In the UK, my confirmation says "We estimate your order to be shipped on or before OCTOBER 26TH" so I am assuming that I might have to wait a few days. The previous two occasions it arrived later. Tiger came on the Tuesday, but Panther took ages because they used some cheap parcel post. I remember all the threads on macrumors at the time complaining about Apple's service to UK customers.

Hmm the student discount isn't as much as I had hoped it would be.

I might just wait it out and buy an ADC membership and wait a month, much better value for me.

Do you get server addition with acd?

You don't even have to wait a month to get Leopard with ADC. The GM build of Leopard should be available for download to all ADC members (including Students) by this Friday on the Apple ADC website. I have no idea if Server is included or not.

I would have totally paid the $36 to get rid of aqua altogether.

I think the people attacking the students should have it put in perspective.

How would you all feel if the price of leopard was $205 instead of the $130 that you where expecting. $205 is what it would cost you if you had a %50 price increase and if you believe like voodoo if can not afford the extra $75 could not afford the $130 to begin with.

Sorry but its not the same thing.

The EDU discount is a privilege, not a right. They have not put up the full price. They have not put up an EDU price, they HAVE reduced the discount. Be greatful you get a discount at all. They dont have to offer one.

Maybe all the pensioners should be up in arms that there is no pensioner discount.

I know how that goes. :) $40 to me is 10 trips to Subway, or a month's worth of groceries! (I live in a house, we split the food bill.)

So am I, and so have I, but that doesn't change my opinion on the difference between theft of physical property and duplication of intellectual property. One is illegal because it is wrong, and one is illegal because we deem it beneficial to be.

I'm more concerned with families being slapped with quarter million dollar judgments than I am with lost revenue from people that probably weren't going to buy my software anyway.

The cost of manufacturing a boxed DVD for Leopard will be a couple of dollars absolute max, virtually the entire cost is in the intellectual property contained on the DVD. So, I repeat my earlier question: why is downloading or otherwise "borrowing" a copy of leopard any different to taking a box from the store from a moral standpoint? How many people wouldn't dream of stealing software, music CDs or movies from a retail store (all of which have negligible inherent value) but don't think twice about downloading it? I simply cannot see the difference in a "decent" society

Secondly, being a senior in college, I honestly don't even have $129 or $116, much less to spend on an upgrade.

But that's the thing, if you don't have $116 then you SHOULDN'T BE SPENDING $79 either!

I was dirt poor in college too, so I understand not having money. But for me, poor meant I couldn't even afford the student prices on software. I got by with the previous generation of everything. I even used Windows ME for 3 years, for god's sake.

For everyone complaining how you don't have $116...take it from someone who's been there: If you can't afford that, then spending $79 on this upgrade would have been a VERY BAD IDEA! You'll need that more elsewhere, trust me.

I just checked out my local campus store. They won't be getting Leopard in right away, and they haven't finalized pricing yet, but the guy there seemed to think that it was going to check in somewhere between $70-80 CAD for the edu pricing. This is actually cheaper than the Tiger EDU at $89 CAD. At this same campus store, iLife '08 and iWork '08 are selling for $49.99, so it's reasonable to assume that at the physical campus stores where you have to actually show a validated Student ID, that the pricing will be more in line with the traditional EDU US pricing ($69) given our current parity with the USD.

I don't have to pay for the price they are listing either

Hurrah!!! :)

So now the debate is whether to pre-order Online, or queue to buy it from a store - which one will get me Leopard sooner??!!

you will notice that it says "Delivers" on oct 26th. I'm sure delivery will be before 6pm...but you need to sign for it.

Anyone know how soon after the 26th will Leopard be included software on macs on the online store? Specifically Macbook Pro on the UK online store.

EDIT - Found a thread in the MBP forum on this subject so ignore please.
